UMBRELLA AND PARASOL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters l atent No. 288,566, dated November 13, 1883,

To all whom, it nuty concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. FUssnLL,

a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and a citizen of the United States, have invented certain Improvements in Umbrellas and Parasols, of which the following is a specification.

The obj ect of myinvention is to so construct anumbrella or parasol that, when closed, it will present aneater and more compact appearance than usual; and this object I attain in the manner hereinafter set'forth, reference bei'ng had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of the upper portion of an umbrella or para-sol made in accordance with my invention, and Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 side Views of parts of the same.

A is the stick, which is in the present instance tubular, and has a tubular metallic core, B, for the purpose of strengthening the same. The upper end of the stick is reduced in diameter, as shown at a, Fig. 5, for the reception of the notch D, to which. the ribs F are hung, as usual, the notch being smaller in diameter than an ordinary notch, which is fitted directly over the stick. This renders the umbrella or parasol very compact when closed; but in order to enhance this appearance of compactness, I make the tip G larger in diameter than the stick A, the tip being, in fact, about equal in diameter to the body of the umbrella or parasol when the latter is closed.

The cover :10 is secured by the usual cap, b, and the tip G, which slips over a projecting portion of the central core, B, of the stick, has a ferrule, d, fitting snugly to the cap, as shown in Fig. 1, so thatthe upper portion of the umbrella or parasol presents an appearance of substantially uniform diameter, there being no increase in size where the tip joins the body. 7 I

In order to strengthen the stick at and near the joint with the tip, I provide the tubular core with a central rod, f, which may be of wood ormetal, this rod fitting snugly to the core, and being further held by the pin which secures the notch. y

The main feature of my invention, however-that is to say, the enlarged tip G-may be employed in connectionwith a solid stick, if desired.

I claim as my invention 1. The combination of the notch D, the stick A, reduced in diameter at the end for the reception of the notch, and the tip G, larger in diameter than the stick, as set forth.

2. The combination of the stick A, having a reduced portion, a, and tubular metallic core B, the notch D, the tip G, and the strengthening-rod f, as set forth.
