Description

'listin STATES PATENT OFFIGE. e
GEORGE van ZANDT, or OAK PARK, iLLiNors.
HAND-STAM P.
SPECIFIGATXON forming part Vof Letters Patent No. 288,385, dated November i3, i883. i Application filed November 22, 1881. (No model.)
.To 4(1r/ZZ zzz/wm, `it may concern; i
i whenl printing.
, the style suited for removable type.
Beit known that I,"Gnor.en VANy ZANDT,
I a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak` Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illi-4 nois, have inventeda new and useful Hand-` Stamp, of which the following is a specifica!` y tion.
My invention relates to hand-stamps in which the die-,plate oscillates and inks itself upon a cloth cushion. d
The objectsof my improvement are, iirst, to simplify andcheapen the construction; sec# ond, to `permit the die-plate to adjust itself upon `the inkpad; third, to preventvibration ofthe die-plate when printing; fourth, to prei y vent noise or` jarring in themovementyfth,
to provide an easy way of repairing; sixth, to arrange the stampso that it may be separated and put together without tools; and, seventh, 2O`
to provide uin the die-plate a 'suitable fastener for removable type.- I attain these obj ects by ,Y
the stamp illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view, with the die- `plate in the position assumed when at rest y `is a view of theplat'e used for removable datthe figures.
ing-types. Fig. 6 shows one end of the dieplate. Fig; 7 is a sectionalview lengthwise of the plate shown in Fig. `5. d
Similar letters indicate similar parts in all Ais a hollow handle containing a spiral springwhich presses up against the handle and down on the end of the rod B, which is partly inserted.` The `rod is riveted to the frame D, which is `a piece of metal cut and bent as shown, and having a long 4straight slot in each leg. e
C is an elastic metal yoke attached to the handle Aand inclosing the frame D, and having a short pin, F',A riveted in each end,
E is the oscillating plate, rectangular in shape, and having at one end apart bent over for an ear or lug,Fig. 6, and lat the other a larger, ear, in which is cut a peculiar slot, K,
which acts as cani. in both ears are pivotholes F, which allow the plate` to turn on the pins F,that are inserted therein. these pins is riveted to each end of the yoke C, and passes through the slot Hin the frameD.
G is a small rod, riveted at each end to the legs ofthe frame D, firmly bracing them. It
`is in the'cam-slot K, and acts as a fulcrumto turn the plate. i
. K refers to the cam-slot, shaped shown in Fig. 1. The sides are not parallel, 4but each One of has a curve peculiar to itself.` It tits loosely over the fulcrum, except at and near its open end. It controls the movement of the die-plate oscillating upon the pivots in` combination with 'the fulcrum attached to the frame having d the long straight slot.
L refers tothe ink-pad, suggested bythe V refers to the metal `struck up from the opening O on the side` next to the teeth.
Through it a `narrow slot, W, is cut, and
through the slot the teeth project `into the opening. VArefers to theimetal on the other side.
The action is as follows: The handle A, be-
ing pressed downward upon the stem B, carries the yoke C, havingthe pins F', and the dieplate, whichis pivoted on the pins. As the pins follow the. straight slot H the plate moves away from the ink-pad until the side of the slot K r touches the fulcrum G. It touches lightly at first, th en with gradually increasing pressure and speed it turns over the fulcrum, and the pressure and speed gradually diminish and the plate is inverted without` shock or noise. Astraighter part of the slotK then incloses the fulcrum` G, touching `it onboth sides, steadying the plate and guiding it per- IOC i pendicularly toits workV of"print'ing.` The i pressure is removed from the handle A, the
5 springreturns all parts to the position in Fig. 1.
The stamp may be separated by opening the elastic yoke C, and thereby drawing the pins out of the pivot-holes F.
The action of the part arranged for remova- Io ble type is as follows: Pressure on the handle S will move the arm P in direction of the arrow, and the teeth are withdrawn through slot W releasing the type.
inserted, the armP is pressed back into place,
Y I 5 and the teeth enter the opening and hold th type against the opposite side.
I am aware that prior to my invention selfinkin g stamps with removable type have been made and used, -and I do not therefore claim 2o suchacombination, broadly; but
New type beingv Vhat I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The plate E, oscillating upon the pins F', and having the cam-slot K, in combination with the frame D, having the slot H, and pro- 25 vided with the fulcrum G, all substantially as set forth.
2. The elastic yoke C,- having the shortpins F', in combination with the frame D, having the slots H, and plate E, having pivot-holes 3o F, all substantially as shown.
3. The die-plate E, having projections V and V and opening O, in combination with the arm l?, provided with handle S, and teeth` for engaging, through slot W, with the remov- 35 able type, all substantially as specified.
GEORGE VAN ZANDT.
