(Cl. 197-186) The present invention relates to a typewriter which comprises a machine frame including a driving mechanism, a type-bar operating segment, a carriage runway for an exchangeable paper carriage and a cover surrounding the frame.
It is customary to mount parts or groups of parts of the typewriter on a frame surrounded by a casing. Such frames are fitted together of cast parts or parts of sheet metal, their shape being adapted to their location within the machine. The mounting of the parts or groups of parts of the typewriter mechanism into the frame is comparatively tedious and the fine adjustment is relatively diflicult to perform as the several parts are not easily accessible within the assembled frame.
It is the object of the present invention to overcome the above mentioned difficulties and in addition to facilitate the assembly and to reduce the manufacturing costs. More specifically, an object is to provide a typewriter which includes a main base upon which the keyboard and keys are assembled, lateral end walls and a back wall upon which other parts are assembled, and a segment carrier upon which the type bars are mounted; the arrangement being such that the segment carrier may be lowered into position upon a frame constituted by securing the end and back wall assemblies to the main base.
Otherobjects and the advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description when taken with the accompanying drawings, wherein:

As shown in Fig. 1,- the members of the whole keylever mechanism are supported on a cast bearing base 1 with a key-lever bearing 1a and a sub-lever bearing 1b.
Lateral connecting webs 1c of the bearing block l are provided with sets of transversely alined bores 2 adapted to receive adjustable pivot screws 3. A control shaft 4 for the adjustment of double spacing operation rests in the rearward pair of these pivot screws. The said shaft 4 actuatesthrough a lever arrangement, not shown in the drawing, the escapement mechanism so that the latter ?,881,896 Patented Apr. 14, 1959 effects a double spaced step in a manner known per se. Another pair of pivot screws serve for the support of a shift shaft 5 which is adapted to cause the type bar segment carrier to move from an upper into a lower wfiting position. An arm 5a on shaft 5 is urged by a spring 55 to retain shaft 5 normally in one of its end positions; Moreover, a third pair of pivot screws support a shaft 6 having rock arms 6a for guiding the segment carrier which will be described later, between upper and lower writing positions. The pivot screws 3 for the shafts 4, 5 and 6 respectively are disposed in the bearing block 1 itself, and not in the lateral end plates of the frame as in the case of conventional typewriters.
The key-levers 7 are pivotally mounted in a manner known per se within the key-lever bearing 1a, and they are kept in their normal position by springs 9 which extend between the key-levers 7 and a spring anchor comb 8 supported by the key-lever bearing 1a.
The sub-levers 10 are mounted in the sublever bearing 1b, and they are also kept in their position by springs 12 which are anchored to another comb 11 and extend to the sub-levers 10.
The key-levers 7 are guided at their forward end by means of a key-lever comb 14 which is carried by supporting members 13 fastened to the bearing block 1, and the upward movement of the key-levers 7 is limited by a cushion 15. The supports 13 also hold by means of pivot pins 16 a shaft which forms part of the mechanism. Bell-crank levers are fastened to this shaft and are linked with the tabulator keys 17 arranged on the upper surface of the key-lever comb 14.
To the same shaft, which carries the said bell-crank levers, the space bar 18 is connected by means of two arms 18a.
A universal bar 19 is disposed at the rearward end of the block 1 so that it is in operational connection with fingers 7b of the key levers, and it is supported between the points of two pivot screws 20 in a similar manner as the shafts 4, 5 and 6. A device 21 for lifting the ribbon as well as a device 22 for the drive of the ribbon are connected to the said universal bar 19. At the upper face of the key lever bearing 1a, in the center and at the left side thereof, bearing brackets 23 and 24 are provided which carry a shaft 25 for the adjustment of the throw of the ribbon. In addition, the key lever bearing 1a is provided with a lever 26, the purpose of which is, in connection with an operating stirrup which is not clearly apparent from the drawing but known per se, to untangle locked type bars.
' All the aforementioned parts constitute a preassembled group of parts, i.e. a built-in unit, which can be connected easily with the lateral end plates, which carry the machine, and with the back wall.
The two lateral end plates of the frame which carry a'number of functional members of the machine, also form groups of parts constituting a unit ready' to be assembled. For instance, as shown in Fig. 2,"the lateral end plate 27 of the right'side of the frame carries an adjustment device 28 for the touch control which influences in a known manner over a special lever arrangement 28a the universal bar 19 by means of a tension spring 28b, the initial tension of which may be adjustable if desired. In addition, a supporting arm 29 is adjustably fixed by means of two screws 30 to the end plate 27. The supporting arm has a cylindrical socket 290 which a is adapted to receive a special adjustable prismatic guide 31 which can be adjusted and locked in desired position by means of a screw 32, see Figs. 5a and 5b. The upper end 29a of the supporting arm 29 is bent and serves to hold a space scale 63, seeFig. 8. p A backwardly extending projection 29b serves to carry a distance shaft 64.
Moreover, a plate 34, adapted to receive the carriage runway fer the, cqmplcted carriage, is fastened by means of E9. screw te t e up r r e of the a eral end plate 27 of the frame, while a locking lever 35 for the carriage is provided on a lug 27a within the rear part of the lateral end plate 27 of the frame.
The other lateral end plate 36 of the left side of the frame carries a device 37 for the adjustment of the ribbon throw (see Fig. 3). This device includes a linkage 38 for actuating the shaft 25 within the first described structural unit. Moreover, a second supporting arm 39 is provided which forms, as it were, a mirror image of the supporting arm 29 and serves the same purpose as the latter. A second plate 40 adapted to receive the carriage runway and a second locking lever 41 for the typewriter carriage are provided in the same way as in the lateral end plate 27 of the frame. Both end plates have sets of vertically alined bosses with openings 55 to receive screws for clamping the ribbon mechanisms to the end plates.
7 The back wall 42 of the frame, see Fig. 4, also forms a group of parts constituting a built-in unit which carries the whole escapement mechanism 43, a back-spacing de vice 44 including a distance stop 45, a tabulator device 46, a transmission lever 47 for the line lock as well as thcmargin release device 48.
The type bar segment carrier 49 (Fig. 5) is a casting with dependent arms 49;; for connection to arms 6a of the shaft 6, and with a type bar segment 50 and an operating arm 51 constitutes a group of parts which form a unit readyto be bulit in. The segment carrier is equipped at both upper ends with a prismatic ball race 52, both ball races being provided with rubber cushions 53 at the sides facing the segment carrier 49. In the center of the segment carrier 49 a ribbon guide 54 is arranged in a manner known per so so that it is free to move vertically.
v The operating mechanisms for the ribbon comprise spool carriers 58, 59 rotatably supported on brackets 58a, 59a, respectively, through which screws 60 may be passed to secure the mechanisms to the end plates 36 and 27, respectively. Pawl and ratchet devices for a one-way drive. of the spool carriers in opposite directions include links 61 with slotted ends for fitting over the universal bar 19 and an adjustable length connecting bar 62 between hedriv mechanisms.
The assembly of the machine is performed in such a manner that first the completed key-lever mechanism is connected by its webs 1c with the completed lateral end plates 27 and 36by means of screws which extend through bores 55 and 56 of the end plates. The, plates 27, 36 and the bearing block 1 are provided with a number of sockets 57 into which alinement pins maybe fitted for the assembling operation, so that a fine adjustment is facilitated or even not necessary at all.
7 After the two end plates 27 and 36v of the frame have been fixed, the back wall 42 is fitted in by its. insertion be-. tween the two lateral end plates 27- and 36 of the frame. and by connecting these parts by means of cylindrical screws and fittingpins. In this stage of the assembling operation, the required connections between the .lever mechanism and the functional members carried by the lateral'end plates 27; and 36 of the machine are performed. Thereafter, the segment carrier '49 with the type bar seg-. ment; 50 is built in, and to this end it is necessary to. connect'the lowerends 49a of the segment carrier 49 with the/guide arms 6a of the shaft 6 as shown in Fig. lb. The arms fiqilserve to guide thesegment carrier 49 in its movement so as to avoid any canting. Also, at this time the segment carrier 49'is connected as shown in Fig. lb via articulated link 5d and 'arm 50 with the shift shaft 5. Link 'is pivotally connected at one end to segment carrier 49. The upper end of the segment carrier 49 is guided at each side by a ball 31a disposed between the prismatic guides or ball races 52. The primatic guides 31 are adapted to be finely adjusted into exact parallelism with the direction of movement of the segment carrier 49 by means of a gauge inserted in the slots 31b, see Fig. 5b.
The last groups of parts to be assembled in the machine and to be adjusted are the two ribbon-movement units 58 and 59 by connecting their flanges 58a and 59a to the frames 27 and 36 by means of two screws 60 passing through holes 65 in the lateral parts of the frames. Now is only left the connection of the arms 61 to the arms 22 of the universal bar 19 which actuate the ribbon movement, while the two rods 62 are connected with each other already in the. pre-assembled group of parts.
The line finder scale 63 is now fastened by means of screws, to. the bent end 29a of the supporting arm 29, and the, distance shaft 64 is connected to the projection 29b and adjusted by means of a gauge.
Now a cover, which is known per se and therefore not represented in the drawings, can he slipped over the connected parts of the machine and fastened by means of screws in the usual manner,
The. corresponding and exchangeable carriage runway as well as the carriage can be assembled independently of the assembly of the described parts of the machine, and the carriage, runway in its completed state can then be mounted on and fixed to the plates. 3:4 and 40 of the lateral end .plates 27 and 36.
The completed frame of the machine thus consists essentially of the following main fittedetogether groups of parts: The complete key-lever mechanism with sub-lever bearing and keyboard, the lateral end plates of the frame, and the back wall provided with the escapement mechanism, to which are added the type-bar segment carrier as, well as the ribbon movement device (the right and the left part fitted together) each forming a unit or group of parts. In view of the fact that each individual group. of parts is assembled by means of gauges and tested, the. final assembling operation of the whole machine is substantially facilitated and can be carried out for the greater part by unskilled labor.
I claim:
I. In a typewriter, the combination of a prefabricated assembly comprising a bearing block supporting a keyboard and key lever mechanisms, said assembly including a shift shaft and a universal bar; end plates forattach ment to. said bearing block to constitute the sides of the typewriter frame; a back wall with a prefabricated escapement mechanism supported thereon, said back wall being connected intermediate the rear portions of said end plates; a type-bar segment carrier with a ribbon guide and type-bars mounted thereon; said bearing block and end plates having sets of openings for alinement of the end plates on said bearing block; means securing said end plates to said bearing block; cooperating means on said end plates and said type-bar segment carrier formounting the latter on said end plates after'the same are assembled upon said bearing block and means then interconnecting said shift shaft with. said type-bar segmentcarrier.
2. In a typewriter, the invention as recited in claim 1, wherein said end plates are provided with. plates for supporting a carriage runway and with levers for locking engagement with a carriage.
3. In. a typewriter, the invention as recited incla-im 1, wherein said back wall has pro-assembled thereon-'a baclcv spacingdevice, a tabulator device, a control lever for a line, lock device, and a margin release element.
4 -Ina typewriter, the invention .as recited in claim .1, wherein said cooperating means mount said 'segment 'carrier for vertical adjustment between upper and lower writing position, the bearing block of said prefabricated assembly includes lateral connecting webs provided with sets of transversely alined bores, in combination with References Cited in the file of this patent pivot pins in said bores, shafts supported on the pivot 5 pins in each set of transversely alined bores, one of said shafts being said shift shaft and having an arm thereon for connection to said segment carrier.
