Description

ADELBERT A; AT IVOOD, OF SHENANDOAH, IOWVA.
DRAG SAWIN G MACHINE.
\ srncrrrcn'rron forming 'a'citizenof the United States, residing at Shenandoah, inthe county of Page and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drag Sawing Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchlas will enable others skilled in the art to which-it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in frames or supports for drag sawing machines, having for its object to adapt the machine to be operated on either hillside or level ground,
to give a steady and smooth motion to the saw, and to reduce friction; and it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed' In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal side elevation of my improved drag-saw. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line y yet 7 Fig. 1. Iwill now describe the best means for placgoing a machine made in accordance with my invention in practical working order.
In the drawings, A A represent two uprights supported upon a sill and connected at the top by a cap.
B represents a shaft, journaled in suitable bearings secured to the fronts of the posts A A, having rigidly connected thereto a large gear-wheel, 6, adapted to engage with and communicate motion to a pinion, E, on a shaft, D, journaled in bearings at the rear of the frame A, saidsha-ft 1) being provided with a balanoewheel, to give steady motion to the saw.
Connected to the shaft 13, having two crankarms, is a pitman, said pitman being provided with a casthead, slotted longitudinally,
to adapt the saw, and a swinging and adj ustable" lever, F, to be pivoted thereto. The
swinging lever F is adjustably supported in 50 guides G G, having slots 6 eextending nearly part of Letters Patent No. 28'7,895, dated November 6, 1883. Application filed February ii, 1883. (No model.)
throughout their length, by means of a screwthreaded and nutted rod, The guides Gr G are mortised in beams LEI H, extending forward from the uprights A, and adapted to rest on the log or other material to be sawed by means of pins h 11, secured in their forward ends.
The guides G are braced at the top by means of screw-threaded and nutted rods 0, and at the bottom by braces d, on each side, mortised in the uprights A, horizontal beams H, and vertical guides G. The said beams H are provided at their forward ends with pivoted legs I, to support said forward end when the machine is not in use.
Itwill be observed that by applying power to the handle a or the band-pulley b, affixed rigidly to the shaft having the gear-wheel and crank-arms, it will be caused to revolve and communicate rotary motion to the balance-wheel shaft, and reciprocating motion to the saw'through the medium of the pitman and crank-arms.
By means ofthe swinging lever, adjustably mounted in the guides G and pivoted to the saw and pitman, the saw is under the control of the operator, and can be adjusted to enter the-log of wood to any desired depth, or raised or lowered according to the size of material to be sawed.
The machine can be anchored by means of chains J J I am aware that a saw has been heretofore connected to a swinging arm adjustably pivoted to a standard in the frame, and connected to a pitman-driving mechanism, and I therefore do not claim such invention. 7
I am aware that it is not new to secure the sustaining-lever of a saw in slotted standards, so that the lever and saw may be ad 'justed up and down in said slot,
I am also aware that it is common to secure bridges and like structures by tie-rods, which are adjustable as to length, and the saw-frames have been braced by such tie-rods. Such I do not claim.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- The slotted uprights secured to the horizontal beams and braced by upper and lower I00 2 v 2e7,se5
braces, the latter being mortised thereto, and In testimony. whereof I affix my signature also to the horizontal beams, in combination in presence of two witnesses.
With the swingin lever extending below the horizontal beams? which serve as guides there- ADELBEBT ALONZQ ATWOOD' 5 for, saw and pitman, and the pivoted legs WVitnesses: adapted to be pinned to the sides of the beams, B. TODD, as and for the purpose set forth. J. G ROOKAFELLOW.
