(Cl. 10S-26) This invention relates to flashing which is used for shedding water and condensation from roofs and other structures. Among objects of my invention is to provide an improved combined llashing and reglet which is so disposed in relation to a side wall and adjoining roof or oor surface of a building structure as to produce a durable leak proof connection. A further object is to provide improved means whereby a reglet and counterashing are so applied as to be equally applicable to a building composed of concrete, stucco, brick or other types of structures. A particular but not exclusive advantage attained by my improved construction is that counter flashing is so held that it can be easily removed and replaced thus permitting old or new rooting to be applied.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Fig. 1 is a vertical section of a detail portion of a building Istructure composed partly of concrete,
showing my improved combined flashing and reglet applied to its roof and side wall; Fig. 2 is 4a vertical sectional View of a detail portion of a cement structure, showing my improved combined flashing and reglet applied to its roof and the adjacent parapet wall; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View of a detail portion of a building structure composed of stucco type showing my improved combined llashing and reglet applied to its roof and parapet wall; and Fig. 4 is a fragmental vertical section, partly in perspective and at reduced scale, showing my improved flashing when applied in use.
Referring to Fig. l, portions of a roof and adjacent parapet wall 11 of a building structure, composed of concrete is shown, to which my improved counter ashingA and companion reglet B are applied. The reglet B which is composed of sheet metal or other suitable material is bent into the form of a longitudinal and outwardly converging channel member 13. The upper longitudinal wall 14 of said channel converges laterally and extends downwardly so as to form an outer drip flange and abutment 15. The longitudinal edge portion of the drip llange abutment 15 is doubled upwardly and its outer end portion 16 overlaps and is seated in the outer face of the parapet wall 11. The upper and lower sides 14 and 18 of the channel in the reglet thus converge outwardly. The outer end portion of the lower side 18 is struck downwardly and formed with a flange 19 which is sealed in the outer surface of the concrete wall in substantial alignment with the upper drip flange 15.
The roof portion indicated by 10 of a building structure is shown covered by layers of composition roofing 20, the edge portion thereof being flashed upwardly at 21 in the usual manner over the lower outer surface of the parapet wall, as shown in Fig. l, for the purpose of shedding water.
A removable thin sheet counter flashing A, shown in Fig. l and composed of metal or other suitable material is provided. This counter flashing is formed with an integral longitudinal V-shaped shoulder on its upper end. This shoulder 25 is adapted to extend into and tightly engage the wall of the transverse channel 13 in the reglet. The portion Vof the reglet below the inner end portion of the shoulder 25 is formed with a downwardly extended counter V-shaped shoulder 26, with which `a fastener, such as a set screw 27, or other suitable means, when secured through the drip llange 15 is adapted to engage 7 `2,874,654 Patented Feb. 24, 1959 ICC downwardly while tightly impressed over the upward roof flashing 21.
' The fastening means for holding the counter flashing A in the recessed reglet B may be by means of screws 27, pins or other suitable fastening means.
In use the cooperating shapes lof the reglet and counter flashing form durable and leak proof means for sealing flashingV between a roof and wall of a building structure. Also the locking means 27 for securely fastening the counter ilashing constitutes improved means of maximum simplicity by which a durable and highly effective leak proof joint is produced.
In Fig. 2 a modified form of my improved reglet and flashing is disclosed when applied to a brick parapet wall. In this modified construction a brick building or parapet wall 30 and the usual line of roof structure 31 are indicated. Layers of water proof rooting 32 having the usual up turned flashing 33 are intended to be laid on the roof surface. This roof surface structure employs a reglet C, having an over hanging longitudinal channel member D which is doubled upwardly and extended downwardly so as to form an outer drip flange 34 and an inner abutment 34 against the brick wall 30.
The llashing member A is substantially similar to the flashing member shown in Fig. 1. lts upper V-shaped end portion 35 is secured firmly in the reglet C by set screws such as 36 or other suitable means.
In the modied construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the reglet F is adapted to accommodate a construction in which a stucco surfacing such as 38 is applied on the wood frame structure 39. The reglet F is shaped in cross section to accommodate the stucco surfacing and resembles a rectangular housing 40, having an upper longitudinal flange 41, which is secured in usual manner to the frame .structure 39. A lower longitudinal llange 42 is secured to said stucco surfacing by usual means such as nails 46 or other suitable means. A horizontal opening or slot 44 is provided in the stucco wall nish 38 so as to accommodate the housing 40. In this modified construction of reglet the flashing element A, which is similar to the flashing member shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is secured in place in a similar manner as above described by screws 47 which are insert-ed through the drip flange 45 of the housing 40.
It is intended that any suitable fasteners may be substituted in place of the screws 47, 36 or 27 shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, within the spirit of the invention. It is also intended that the shape of the counter flashing may be modied in shape and construction within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the following claims.
l claim: v
1. Flashing comprising a reglet adapted to be secured to a wall and having a drip ange thereon depending therefrom in spaced relation to the wall, a counter-flashing provided with an upstanding shoulder, substantially V-shaped in cross-section, adjacent its upper edge adapted to seat behind the said drip flange, and means for detachably securing said counter-flashing in position behind said drip flange, said means comprising a plurality of screws engaged in a plurality of screw openings in the said drip flange adjacent the bottom edge thereof with the forward ends of said screws engaging the counter-flashing surface adjacent to but below the shoulder thereon.
2. The flashing of claim 1, said reglet having a channel substantially U-shaped in cross-section, one arm of said channel comprising said drip flange.
