Y 1 Claim. (Cl. 33--102) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in tools and is directed more particularly to improvements in bevels as used by toolmakers, machinists and the like.
The principal objects of the invention are directed to the provision of a bevel for toolmakers, machinists and the like which is constructed and arranged for precision work and not only is readily and easily adjusted but also maintains adjustment in such a manner as to avoid accidental misadjustment.
According to novel features of the invention, the bevel is adapted for adjustment to a very fine degreeV and the blade is secured in adjusted position by a means which does not tend to disturb the adjustment, all to the end that the tool is suited for work requiring the utmost precision.
Another` objectvis to provide a strong and durable apparatus of the above mentioned type, with parts thereof constructed and coacting so as to reduce costly machining operations and facilitate manufacture as by molding or die casting and also to facilitate and expedite assembly thereto of various coacting parts.
Another object is in general to provide an improved structure of the above mentioned type that'will be well adapted to meet varying requirements and also the conditions of hard practical use.
Other objects will be in part obvious or in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangements of parts as will be exemplified in the structure to be hereinafter described and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claim.
In the accompanying drawings in which is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention and in which similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views;
Fig. l is a plan view of a bevel embodying the novel features of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevational view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1;
Figs. 3 and 4 are side and front elevational views rcspectively of the pivot member of the bevel shown in Figs. l and 2;
Fig. 5 is an inverted plan view of one end of the body of the bevel; and
Fig. 6 is an inverted plan view of the cover plate of the bevel.
Referring now to the drawings more in detail, the novel features of the invention will be described.
An elongated body or support 2 is providedl which, at its forward or pivot end, is provided with a bore or opening 4 for a pivot member to be described.
A recess 6 is formed around the opening 4. The opposite end of the body 2 is provided with an opening 8 for a lock and an elongated groove 10 extends between the recess 6 and opening 8, for a lock bar.
2,873,532 Pdtented Feb. 17, 1959 ice A pivot member 12 is 'circular in form and has an annular flange 14. The said member 12 is rotatable in the bore 4 andrecess of the body 2 and a cover plate 16 is secured to the lower face `of the body 2 by suitable means such as screws 18. Holes 20 are provided in the plate 16 for the screws 18 which Vthreadedly engage the body. The member 12 is held in the body for rotation relative thereto by means of the plate 16 which is provided with an opening 16'. Y t
The pivot member is formed to have a slot 24 disposed horiaontally and a vertically `disposed opening 26 for a nut as will appear. The pivotmember 12 is also provided with a horizontal hole 2S extending into the vertical opening 26 thereof. t t l 1 I p Y A blade 30 is slidable in the slot 24 of the pivot member and is provided `with a longitudinal groove 32 in the lower face thereof.
A hook member 34 is inserted in the opening 28 and has an inner threaded end 36 and an outer hook end 38. A nut d() disposed in the vertical opening 26 is in engagement with the threaded end 36 of the hook member which engages in the groove of the blade, as shown.
By tightening the nut 4G, the hook end 38 of member 34 in the groove of the blade draws the blade inwardly of the slot 24 of the pivot member to clamp said blade in the desired position of longitudinal adjustment.
As stated, the pivot member is rotatable in the body for adjusting the angularity of the blade. Means is provided for locking the member 12 in positions of angular adjustment.
To that end, a stud 44 has a lower end 46 fixed in the plate 16 in a suitable manner, as by a press it. The upper end of the stud is threaded and said stud is enlarged intermediate its ends, as shown.
A lock nut 48 is in threaded engagement with the upper end of the stud 44 and has a more or less conical or chamfered lower end 48.
An elongated lock bar 50 is slidable in the groove 10 of the body and has an end 52 which is complemental to and is adapted to abut the liange 14 of the pivot member.
The end of the bar 5d adjacent the lower end of the nut is transversely curving and inclined at Sil for engagement by the end lower portion 48 of the nut 4S.
By screwing the lnut 48 downwardly, the lower end thereof bears the end 50 of the lock bar S0 and urges the end S2 thereof against the flange of the pivot member to hold it against turning.
By loosening the nut d8, the pivot member may be turned to provide the desired angle of the blade and, thereafter, the nut may be tightened to bring about locking of the pivot member in the adjusted position.
The nut of the hook member may be loosened for ylongitudinal adjustment of the blade and subsequently tightened to maintain the adjustment.
The said nuts are readily accessible at the upper scale of the body so that the desired adjustments may be easily and readily accomplished.
The blade may take any form desired or such as will be found adaptable for various purposes and changes may be made in the form of the device without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
