EDWARD WADE, NORWICH, CONNECTICUT.
PUMP.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 28,704, dated .T une 12, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD W'ADE, of Norwich, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and improved Motion for Pumps and other Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this speciiication, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of ditto, the line m, Fig. l, indicating the plane of section.
Similar letters of reference in both views indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the arrangement of a horizontally rotating cam disk, in combination with a rising and falling yoke, and with a series of lazy tongs in such a manner that by rotating the disk a rapid reciprocating motion is imparted to a pump piston or other part of a machine attached to the eXtreme end of the lazy tongs.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation with reference to the drawing.
A represents a disk provided with a cam groove a, and attached to a vertical arbor B. This arbor has its bearings in a frame C, which is irmly secured to t-he top of a pump barrel D, or to any other convenient place, and it (the arbor) is rotated by means of a series of levers E, inserted into sockets b, on the top end of the arbor or in a plate c, attached to said top end.
The cam groove a, forms the guide for friction rollers el, that are secured to the upper ends of arms e, which projects from the yoke F, and the shape of the cam groove is such that on rotatin the disk A, the yoke is caused to rise and all several times, for each revolution of the disk. The cam groove represented in the drawing, is furnished with four projections a', forming a uniform wave line and causing the friction rollers on the ends of the arms e, to rise and fall four times, but it will be easily understood that the number and also the form of said projections may be changed to suit circumstances.
The yoke F, connects by means of bars g, with the pivot z., which connects the centers of the second pair of links c', of a series of lazy tongs G, but instead of connecting said bars with the central pivot h, of the second link, two pairs of such bars might be employed and connected to thc pivots 7L', which unite the ends of the first and the second link, and the effect of my machine would be considerably improved.
The pivot z', which unites the ends of the bars constituting the rst link of the lazy tongs passes through a bracket H, secured to the center of the bottom plate of the frame C, so that by moving the yoke F, up and down, the whole series of lazy tongs are eX- tended and contracted. It is obvious that the number of links constituting the series of lazy tongs G, may be increased at pleasure, and a rising and falling, or a reciprocating motion can thereby be imparted to a pump piston attached to the eXtreme end of the lazy tongs, or said lazy tongs may be connected to any other machine or part of a machine to which a reciprocating motion is to be imparted.
This invention can be applied however with particular advantage to pumps, and the reciprocating motion imparted to the piston or plunger is very rapidand the stroke can be increased at pleasure, and the power neces sary to operate the piston is very trifling.
