'Claims priority, application Great Britain December 17, 1954 4 Claims. (Cl. 164-53) This invention relates to cutting devicesA for cutting continuous lengths of yarn or thread into pieces. The main object of the invention is to provide a simple but elfective cutting device capable of cutting a plurality of continuous lengths in the production of pieces therefrom, for example for use in producing tufted carpets.
According to the invention, a cutting device for cutting continuous lengths of yarn or thread includes a holder to hold a plurality of cutting blades, such as safety razor blades, the holder being adapted to move in a path which causes each blade to perform a motion similar to a slashing or slicing motion.
The means whereby the holder is adapted to move in the said path preferably comprises a guide in which the holder is slidable crosswise of the yarn or thread to be cut, and means for imparting motion Vto the holder in the crosswise direction and for imparting motion to the guide towards and away from the yarn or thread, the resultant motion imparting to each cutting blade a motion along an oval or circular path which intersects the yarn or thread. 35
The cutting blades are preferably held in the holder with their cutting edges oblique to the yarn or thread in order to make the cutting action of the cutting blades more effective on the yarn or thread.
Driving mechanism comprising cranks or cams is preferably provided to actuate the holder and guide.
In the more or less diagrammatic drawings Figure l is a front view, partly in section of a cutting device for cutting continuous lengths of yarn or thread.
Figure 2 is an end `View in section.
Figure 3 is a plan view.
Referring to the drawings, in the construction shown therein, there is a block 1 having clamping plates 2 to enable a row of safety razor blades 3 to be clamped 50 to it with their cutting edges 4 disposed obliquely in the same plane. The block 1 is slidably mounted in guide members 5 having a guide slot which is engaged by a tongue 6 on the block 1. The block 1 is pivotally connected by a connection 7 to the strap of an eccentric 8 mounted on a shaft 9 to reciprocate the block 1 in a direction oblique to the cutting edges 4. The guide members 5 are connected pivotally by connections 10 to the straps of eccentrics 11 mounted on arotatable shaft 12 to reciprocate the guide members 5 and therefore the block 1 in a direction oblique to the cutting edges 4 and at right angles to the direction of reciprocation of the block produced by the eccentrics 8. The guide members 5 are constrained by tongues 13 provided thereon and sliding in guide slots in a stationary -bed 14 to maintain the said direction. The resultant motion makes each cutter blade 3 travel round its own oval or circular course with a motion which is continuous or intermittent to suit the nature of the means employed to hold the yarn or 2,868,290 Patented Jan. 13, 1959 ice 2 t thread to be cut. For example the said meansimay hold the yarn or thread stretched and bring successively different parts along its length into the paths of the cutting edges 4 so that the cutting edges cut those parts successively, and the yarn or thread may be stationary during the cutting and progressed between cuts, and the motion of the cutting blades 4 be interrupted whilst the cutting edges are at a withdrawn portion of their paths and the progression of the yarn or thread is taking place.
To enable the block 1 to participate in the motion of the guide members 5 whilst it is being given another motion by the eccentric 8, the connection 7, which slides in a part 15 on the stationary member 14, has a roller 16 engaging a slot 17 in a part 18 connected to the block. The roller 16 reciprocates the block 1 and the slot gives to the block 1 freedom to reciprocate in a direction at right angles to the direction of reciprocation imparted by the eccentric 8.
I claim: 1
1. A cutting device for cutting continuous lengths of yarn or thread, comprising a block, clamping plates on said block, cutting -blades for clamping to said block by said clamping plates with the cutting edges of the blades oblique relative to the yarn or thread, a guide in which said block is slidable in a direction crosswise of the yarn or thread to be cut, a rotatable shaft, an eccentric mounted on said shaft for rotation thereby, a strap of said eccentric, a connection pivoted to said strap and to said block whereby said block can have reciprocal motion in said guide imparted to it in the crosswise direction, a second rotatable shaft, a second eccentric mounted on said second shaft for rotation thereby, a strap of said :second eccentric, a connection pivoted to the last-named strap and to said guide, and a stationary bed in which said guide is slidable in a direction at right angles to said crosswise direction, whereby said guide can have reciprocal motion imparted to it in a direction at right angles to said crosswise direction, the resultant motion imparting to each cutting blade a motion in an orbit intersecting said yarn or thread and similar to a slashing motion, and the oblique cutting edges serving for making the cutting action of the blades more effective.

A cutting device according to claim 1,. wherein the said resultant motion of each cutting blade in an orbit is intermittent and is stopped momentarily when the cutting blades are withdrawn from the yarn or thread for allowing progression of the yarn or thread before the next cutting motion is initiated.

A cutting device for cutting a thread and comprising, in combination, a holder; at least one cutting blade ixedly mounted in said holder; a guide means supporting said holder for movement in a first direction adapted to be transverse to the thread to be cut; an eccentric rotary drive means; a connecting rod driven by said eccentric rotary drive means and having one end connected to said holder so that said holder is reciprocated in said first direction, said connecting rod being connected to said holder for relative movement in a second direction substantially perpendicular to said first direction and adapted to be transverse to said thread; a bed supporting said guide means for movement in said second direction; another eccentric rotary drive means; another connecting rod driven by said other eccentric rotary drive means and having one end connected to said guide means so that said guide means is reciprocated in said second direction, said eccentric rotary drive means operating independently of each other so that the resultant motion of said holder 2,ees,290
effected by the perpendicular motions of said holder and of said guide means imparts to said cutting blade a motion in a controlled orbit located in a plane adapted to be transverse to the thread.
