HAIR TRIMMING BLADE FOR SAFETY RAZORS Filed Feb. 19, 1957 I u I llllllllllllllllnmlllmllnll III'IIIIlIlllIllIl INVENTOR. Thoma; H. Hlhawer United States '2,856,264 Patented Dec. 30, 1958 hre 2,866,264 HAIR TRllVIMING BLADE FOR SAFETY RAZORS Thomas H. Hightower, Birmingham, Ala. Application February 19, 1957, Serial No. 641,076
2 Claims. (Cl. 311-31) This invention relates to a hair trimming blade for use with a safety razor blade holder of either the single edge or double edge type and has for an object the provision of a blade of the character designated which may be employed with safety for trimming hair.
A further object of my invention is to provide a blade for use with a safety razor blade holder including a handle, a guard, and a blade cover, and which shall comprise spaced apart gauge members which are attached to the edge of the usual safety razor blade between the guard and the cover to hold the blade away from the guard in hair trimming position. Y
A further object of my invention is to provide a hair trimming blade for use with safety razors which shall include U-shaped gauge members tting over the edge of the usual safety razor blade and spaced apart along the length thereof, and in which the U-shaped gauge members are thicker on one side thanthe other of the blade whereby cuts of diierent depth may be made therewith.
Devices embodying features of my invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part ol` this application, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a double edge blade made in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan View of a single edge blade made in :ccordance with my invention;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along the line III-lll of Fig. 1 and drawn to a larger scale;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a double edge safety razor blade holder having one of my improved hair trimming blades mounted therein; and,
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken along the line V--V of Fig. 4, partly broken away and in section.
Referring to the drawing for a better understanding of my invention, I show in Fig. 1, one form of my improved hair trimming blade having a double edge 11 and 12. Mounted along the edges of the blade in spaced-apart relation are a plurality of gauge members 13 which may be formed of a suitable material, such as plastic, metal or the like. The gauge members 13, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, tit snugly over -the associated edge of the blade and are formed with a thicker upper side 14, as viewed in the drawing, and a thinner lower side 16. It is preferable that the gauge members 13 be permanently attached to the edges of the blade and that blades having the gauge members so attached may be packaged and sold as such. It will be apparent however that the gauge members may be made and sold separately and attached by the user to the razor blade.
In Fig. 2 of the drawing I show a well known form of single edge razor blade 17 having the hair trimming gauges 13a attached along the edge thereof. With either type of blade, the operation of the device is substantially the same.
Referring to Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawing, I show a well known form of double edge blade holder 18 including a handle 19, a guard 21 and a blade cover 22. Mounted in the holder 18 is one of my improved hair trimming blades 10 with the spaced apart gauge members 13 mounted thereon. It will be seen from a consideration of Fig. 5 of the drawing that the gauge members 13 act to hold the blade 10 in spaced relation with respect to the guard 21 whereby as the razor is drawn over the hair of the head it will operate as a trimming device. As shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing, the blade 10 is disposed in the holder so that the lower, or thinner side of the gauge member 13 is bearing against the guard 21. To provide a deeper cut, the blade 10 is reversed so that the thicker side of the gauge member 13, or the upper side as viewed in the drawing, will bear against the guard 21.
The mounting and operation of the single edge blade in a single edge razor blade holder is substantially the same as that of a double edge blade holder and inasmuch as the construction and operation of such blade holders is well known in the art, no particular description thereof is here included.
With either form of my invention it will be noted that the gauge members 13 are spaced apart at such a distance that there is no combing action as the blade holder is drawn over the hair being trimmed. it will further be seen that the spacing of the edge of the blade from the blade holder guard 2.1 permits the hair being trimmed to pass in under the blade and also provides for easier cleaning. The blade may be drawn over the hair up or down, or sideways.
While I have shown my invention in but two forms, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that it is not so limited, but is susceptible of various other changes and modifications without departing from the spirit thereof, and I desire, therefore, that only such limitations shall be placed thereupon as are specifically set forth in the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. For use with a safety razor blade holder including a handle, a guard and a blade cover, a hair trimming blade iitting in the blade holder in place of a shaving blade and a plurality of spaced apart U-shaped gauge members itting over the edge of the blade to hold the blade away from the guard in hair trimming position and determine the depth of cut made by the blade, said U- shaped gauge members being thicker on one side than the other and said blade being reversible in the holder.
2. In a safety razor blade holder having a handle, a guard, and a blade cover, a hair trimming blade positioned on the blade holder between the guard and the blade cover, and a plurality of spaced U-shaped gauge members tting snugly over the cutting edge of the blade to space the blade from the guard in hair trimming position and to determine the depth of cut made by the blade, said blade being reversible in said holder.
