WlRE-S TRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,302, dated October 9, 1883.
Application filed June s, was. (NomodcL) durability, inexpensiveness, and general effi ciency.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved wire-stretcher in position for operation. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3is a detail perspective view of the stretchinglever.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the main frame of the device, which comprises four main posts, B, that converge upwardly H is the stretching-lever, which is provided near its lower end with a perforation, I, in
which is adjustable a transverse fulcrum-bar, J, by'means of a set-screw, K, as shown. This fulcrum-bar operates between the bars B of the frame, and is adjustable in the hooks G, the pairs of which correspond in heightto the different strands of the fence, so that the fulcrum of the lever can be adjusted to about the same horizontal plane as the strand of the fence that is being stretched. .In one side of the lever is formed a recess that provides an upwardly and rearwardly beveled shoulder, L, against which the wire, whichis designated by the letter M, is clampedby the corresponding beveled end, N, of a plate or lever, O, that is pivoted to the lever H in the said recess.
These beveled edges L and N are preferably serrated, as shown, to secureabetter hold upon the wire, and will tightly secure the latter while the lever H is being brought down in the direction of the arrow, Fig. l, to stretch the wire. By reason of the bevel being upward and rearward, the plate 0 is clamped tighter against the shoulder L, as the strain caused by stretching the wire is greater. A drum, 1?. is journaledbetween the rear beams, B B, of the frame, to carry the wire and pay it out as the stretcher is moved forward. The
shaft of the drum is preferably provided with a crank, Q, as shown.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood and appreciated. It is very simple and can be conveir iently operated.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the portable frame, comprising the upwardly and inwardly convergent bars, carrying the vertical series of bearing hooks or loops, and the bottom braces, forming transportation-handles, the drum journaled at the rear end of the frame, the stretching-lever having the recess and shoulder and the clamping plate or lever and formed with the fulerunr opening, and the fulcrum-bar, adjustable in the said opening by means of a set-screw, as'
and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in pres-' ence of two witnesses.
ALEXANDER HILL.
