UNITED STAT-Es PATENT OFFICE.
RUDOLPH voLLsoHwITz, or
JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
RAS P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,185, dated September 18, 1883.
i Application filed May 14, 1883. (No model.) i
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH VoLLsoHWITZ, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rasps, of which the following is a specication.
This invention has reference to an improved body made of two plates riveted together, said plates being provided with diagonal lines of slots and insertible rasp-teeth. The shanks of the insertible teeth are bent at right angles to the heads, inserted into the slots of the plates, and rigidly retained by the same, and shoulders formed by the broader projecting por! tions or heads of the teeth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan of my improved rasp.. Figs.` 2 and 3 are vertical transversesections of the same respectively on line x x and 'y y, Fig.. l, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the insertible rasp-teeth on a larger scale.

A in the drawings represents the body of my improved rasp, which is made of two plates, a and b, that are riveted together in such a manner that a small space is left between the same. Both raspplates a and b are provided with diagonal lines of slots, into which the shanks d, of a number of rasp-teeth, D, are inserted, so that diagonal lines of projecting teeth are thereby formed at both sides of the body A. The rasp-teeth D are so inserted into the plates a and bthat the lines of Ateeth of one rasp-plate are located intermediately to the lines of teeth ofY the other rasp-plate, so that the bent shanks d of the teeth are securely clamped sidewise of each other between the l rasp-plates a and b without interfering with each other. Each rasp-tooth D is made of a larger exterior portion or head, d', having a beveled upper edge, di, the upper part of the tooth being wider than the shank d, so that shoulders are formed that project over the rasp-plates a and b, and are rigidly secured thereto by the tight clamping of their shanks between said rasp-plates a and b. The raspteeth are cut off from a continuous blank, so as to be of exactly the same size and shape, and are then inserted into the slots of and clamped fast by the rasp-plates, so that a powerful and effective rasp is obtained.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent* l. A rasp composed of two slotted plates riveted together and a series of A resp-teeth, the. bent shanks of which pass through the slots and are clamped between the plates, substantially as set forth. 2. The process of making rasps, which consists in passing the bent shanks of rasp-teeth through slots in metallic Vrasp plates and clamping the same between the plates by riveting the plates together, substantially as set forth.
3. An insertible rasp-tooth made of awider projectingportion or head, having a beveled cutting-edge and a narrow shank bent at right angles to the head, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myinvention I have signed vmy name n presence of two subscribing witnesses. f
RUDOLPH VOLLSQHVVITZ.
