My invention relates to .window constructionsp and in -particularly, it relates to a Weather stripping and} sash control combination for mounting a pair of sashes in a window frame.
Anobject of my; invention is to provide'a Window con- --struction comprising. weather stripping and sash control which is more simple than any now'known in 'the art.
Another object of my invention is' to provide animproved and simple window construction comprising a frame of simple construction wherein the side jambs thereof have fiat unbroken forwardly facing surfaces between the stops, having eliminated parting; strips and grooving of .the side jambs, and a weather stripping and I sash control combination for mounting sashes in the frame' which comprise only two pieces easily installed oneach side of theframe,
' Another object of my invention is to-provide ainovel and improved window construction which eliminates parting strips; sash balances, dust pads,-intricate grooving: of the side railsof the sashes, andcutting back of the check rails of the sashes to fit around theparting strip, and wherein the sashes may be lifted out of the frame'without removingany of the stops.
Another object of my. invention is to provide'a novel and improved window construction comprising a weather stripping and sash control combination of two .pieces on'each side of the frame'which are connected by screws to theframe for limited movements toward and-away frorn the side jambs thereof; wherein, by tighteningor loosening the screws the pressure on the sashes of the window will -be.kept even, and as weather conditions change the tightening or loosening of the'screws allows for swelling or shrinking, respectively.
Further. objects and advantages of my novel and-improved Weather stripping and sashcontrolcombination are that it may be used many standard check rail window with no special frame needed; it is absolutelynoiseless; it is. air tight withthree air chambers furnishingample insulation;v and it needs no paint nor the sash a edges which come in contact with it.

One pressure member 23 is' disposed between 'one side jamb 11- and its associated guide member 1 6, and'the other pressure member 23 is disposed between the'other sideja'mb' ll and its associated guide member 16. Preferably, each guide member 16'has' a pluralityof vertically spaced, aligned apertures 27 formed in the central portion thereof; and similarly, each pressure m'ember23'h'as a' plurality of' vertically spaced; aligned apertures 28 formed in itsintermediate portio'n24. Adjacent-apertures 28 are vertically spac'ed a distance equal to the distance between adjacent apertures 27 so thateachof the apertures 27 may be horizontally alignedwith-one of the apertures 28. It is noted that the intermediate portions 24 of pressure members 23 engage each of the guide members 16 along sure members 23 might be reversed in positions so that intermediate portions 24 thereof engage the side jambs 11 and the free ends 26'thereof engage the guide members 16. Guide members 16 and pressure members 23 are relatively movable with respect to the wood screws 29 extending tberethrough toward and away from their associated side jambs 11 with the movements of each guide member 16 away from its associated side jamb 11 being limitedby the heads 34 of screws 29. The screws 29 extending through one guide member 16 and its adjoining pressure member 23 are vertically aligned and disposed in common vertical planes with the vertically aligned screws 29 extending through the other guide member 16 and its adjoining pressure member 23. Screws 29 are disposed generally centrally between blind stops 12 and inner stops 13.
I provide a pair of sashes 35 having longitudinally-extending, outwardly-opening grooves 36 formed one in each of their vertically disposed side rails 37. The grooves 36 in the same sash 35 are oppositely disposed. Sashes 35 are mounted between guide members 16 on opposite sides of the common vertical planes of screws 29, see
v Fig. 2, with ribs 17 fitting into the grooves 36, oppositely disposed ribs 17 fitting into the grooves 36 of the same sash 35, for mounting sashes 35 for vertically upward and downward movements. Pressure members 23 urge guide members 16 into engagement with side rails 37 of sashes 35 so that sashes 35 may be vertically positioned within frame in any desired position; and this eliminates the use of sash balances. By tightening or loosening screws 29, the limit of inward movements of guide members 16 may be adjusted toward or away from their associated jambs 11 to allow for swelling or shrinking so that the pressure on sashes 35 may be kept even in spite of swelling or shrinking caused by changes in weather conditions. Thus, sashes 35 will never be loose or rattle in the frame 10, or will never be tight in the frame 10 so that vertical movements thereof are diflicult.
My invention provides for completely removing sashes 35 without taking off any of the stops 12 and 13. Both of the sashes 35 should be first moved to their lowermost positions. Then, referring in particular to Figs. 2 and 5, the sash nearer the operator is moved toward one of the jambs 11, either to the right or left, and the opposite side of the same sash 35 is moved toward the operator. If the inner one ofthe sashes 35 is removed first, the outer sash 35 may then be removed in the same manner, if desired. The movement of either of the guide members 16 toward its associated side jamb 11 against the bias of its adjoining yieldable pressure member 23 provides for both ease and simplicity in removing and inserting the sashes 35; and yet, guide members 16 and pressure members 23 remain connected to the side jambs 11 though the sashes 35 have been removed, and may not be replaced in position each time the sashes are removed and then inserted in the frame 10.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that my invention may be modified by many substitutions and equivalents, and that this disclosure is intended to be illustrative only; therefore, I intend to be limited solelv by the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A weather stripping and sash control combination comprising a longitudinally extending integral guide member formed of metallic sheet stock consisting of a generally planar longitudinally extending central portion, a pair of laterally spaced parallel longitudinally extending generally U-shaped rib portions coextensive with and interconnected by said central portion and projecting outwardly from the plane of said central portion each in the same direction, a pair of laterally spaced longitudinally extending generally planar side portions coextensive with and disposed in coplanar relationship wtih said central portion and each extending from a different one of said ribs to a different one of the lateral edges of said guide member, and a pair of laterally spaced parallel longitudinally extended flanges disposed generally normal to said side portions and projecting therefrom each at a different one of the lateral edges of said guide member in a direction opposite to the direction of projection of said rib portions; said guide member being adapted to be vertically disposed generally parallel to one side jamb of a window frame between vertically disposed laterally spaced stops associated with the same side jamb with the rib portions of said guide member projecting away from said side jamb, said guide member being adapted to be connected to said side jamb for limited movements toward and away from said side jamb; and a longitudinally extended yieldable resilient pressure member which is generally coextensive with said guide member and of generally U-shaped cross section comprising'a generally plate-like intermediate portion and a pair of laterally spaced diverging leg portions extending obliquely outwardly from opposite side edges of said intermediate portion; said pressure member being adapted to be disposed between and engaging said side jamb and said guide member to yieldably urge said guide member to its limit of movement away from said side jamb.
2. In a double hung window sash structure, a window frame comprising a pair of spaced parallel longitudinally extending oppositely disposed vertical side jambs and vertically disposed inner stops and blind stops, an inner stop and a blind stop in laterally spaced relationship assembled with each side jamb to define a pair of oppositely-disposed inwardly-opening longitudinally-extending vertical sash ways, each side jamb defining a flat generally unbroken inwardly-facing surface between the stops assembled therewith; two longitudinally extended guide members, each guide member being integral and formed of metallic sheet stock and consisting of a generally planar longitudinally extending central portion, a pair of laterally spaced parallel longitudinally extending generally U-shaped rib portions coextensive with and interconnected by said central portion and projecting outwardly from the plane of said central portion each in the same direction, a pair of laterally spaced longitudinally extending generally planar side portions coextensive with and disposed in coplanar relationship with said central portion and each extending from a different one of said ribs to a different one of the lateral edges of said guide member, and a pair of laterally spaced parallel longitudinally extended flanges disposed generally normal to said side portions and projecting therefrom each at a different one of the lateral edges of said guide member in a direction opposite to the direction of projection of said rib portions; each of said guide members being mounted in a different one of said sash ways in inwardly spaced generally parallel relationship with the side jamb thereof with the rib portions of each guide member projecting inwardly away from said side jamb; a pair of longitudinally extended yieldable resilient pressure members each associated and coextensive with a different one of said guide members; each of said pressure members being of generally U-shaped cross section and comprising a generally plate-like intermediate portion and a pair of laterally spaced diverging leg portions extending obliquely outwardly from opposite side edges of said intermediate portion; each of said pressure members being disposed between and engaging a different one of said side jambs and its associated guide member; means connecting each of said guide members to its associated side jarnb for limited movement toward and away from its associated side jamb and whereby each pressure member yieldably urges a different one of said guide members to its limit of movement away from its associated side jamb; and a pair of sashes having side rails each sash having a pair of longitudinally extending outwardly opening grooves formed therein with one groove being formed in each of the vertically disposed side rails of References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS 2,662,255 Serley et al.
