2 Claims. (Cl. 211 134) This invention relates to the binding of books or pamphlets and has special reference to a folio assem'bly means preferably termed a spiral bindery table.
ln the binding of a book or pamphlet a number of pages are printed and folded so that the numerical sequence of these pages is in proper relation to each other in each package. These packages are termed folios and in assembling a complete book or pamphlet these folios are packed in proper order one after the other and placed in proper sequential relation.
It is a principal object of the present invention to provide means for conveniently bringing these folios in sequential order one after another before a person assembles the sets of folios necessary to form a complete pamphlet or book.
A second important object of the invention is to provide means for doing this wherein the printed and folded folios will be brought in regular order in front of the person whose duty it is to assemble the same to form the pamphlet or book.
A third important object of the invention is to provide means for carrying these folios past the assembling point in such a manner as to avoid errors in the sequential assembling of the folios.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts, and:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. S is an enlarged fragmentary view looking outwardly on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged plan view of a portion of the stationary platform of this invention and showing the manner of assembling the sections thereof.
Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7 7 of Fig. 5.
Fig. S is an enlarged detailed section on the line 8 8 of Fig. 6.
Fig. 9 is a detailed section on the line 9 9 of Fig. 8.
Fig. 10 is an enlarged detailed section on the line 1;@ 10 of Fig. 3.
ln the construction of this invention there is provided a cylindrical base 10 intended to rest on a table or other platform as indicated at 11. From the upper edge of the cylinder 10 extend a series of segmental platforms 12 preferably called the assembly platforms. These platforms 12 are all in the same horizontal plane and are connected together end to end so as to form a complete circular platform open at its center. The ends of these members 12 extend circumstantially radial from the axis of the device and fitted between adjacent ends is a T-member 13, the inner end of which is bent downwardly as at 14 to lie closely against the inner face of the member 10. This downwardly projecting end 14 is secured to the inner face of the member 10 by means of a clip 15 attached to the member 10 by screws 16, which pass through flanges 17 of the said clip. Similarly the outer ends of the members 13 are held in position to connect to adjacent members 12 by means of clips 18 secured to the under sides of the members 12 by screws 19 passing through flanges 20 formed on the clips.
Extending axially upward through the member 10 is a pipe support 21 at the lower end of which is a disc 22 braced to the pipe support by diagonal braces 23 running from the support to the outer edges of the disc 22. This support 21 extends well above the platform 12, and is there provided with a series of radially extending arms 24 projecting from the member 21 in a spiral arrangement and supported on these arms is a spiral platform 25. The convolutions of the platform 2S are of uniform diameter.
The member 21 may, if desired, be formed of a pair of semi-circular sections 26, held together by clips 27.
With the construction formed in this manner, the inner support, including the spiral platform and the central post, is freely rotatable. As the folios come from the printing and folding operations they are placed in succession on the several convolutions of the spiral support. Those employed in assembling these folios take position around the main table formed by the members 12. The spiral folio support can then be rotated and as each folio passes before one of the persons assembling the book or pamphlet, he picks olf one after the other and utilizes the table formed by the members 12 to jog these folios into proper edge relations.
It will be noted that by reason of the spiral formation of the folio platform one is not apt to overlook any folio that comes before him and the misassembly of the folio is thereby greatly prevented.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as properly come Within the scope claimed.
What is claimed as new is:
1. In a device of the kind described, a base, a jogging platform, supported by said base, and a rotary folio carrier mounted centrally of and projecting upwardly from said platform, said 'base consisting of a cylindrical member and said platform consisting of arcuately segmental portions surrounding the base and supported therefrom, the support for said segmental platform portions consisting of T-members having their webs interposed between adjacent segments and the edges of the segments resting on the flanges of the T-members, said T-members extending over the top edges of the cylindrical base and down against the inside thereof, said segments and the lbase being secured to the T-members by clips straddling the flanges of the T-member and having terminal portions connected respectively to said segments and the base.
2. ln a device of the kind described, a base, a jogging platform, supported by said base, and a rotary folio carrier mounted centrally of and projecting upwardly from said platform, said base consisting of a cylindrical member and said platform consisting of arcuately segmental portions surrounding the base and supported :tween adjacent segments and the edgesrof the segments restingon the flanges of the T-nglembers, said T-members extending Yover the Stop edges of the cylindrical base and down against the inside thereofysaid segments and the base being seured to theT-members by clips straddling the flanges ofV the YT-naeniber and having terminal portions `connected respectively to said Segments and the base.
