To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOEL T. WVARD, of

Piedmont, in the county of Mineral and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Saddlers Sewing-Horse, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved device for holding harnesses, &c., firmly while sewing them.

The invention consists in a saddlers sewing-horse constructed with a fixed jaw and a pivoted jaw connected by a spring, the lower end of which pivoted jaw is connected by a connecting-rod with an arm of one end of a pivoted foot-lever, which can be locked in position by passing the edge of a plate on the lever under the teeth of a rack secured on one of the legs. A rod provided at its upper end with a hook bend passes loosely through the bench, and can be locked in the desired position by means of a suitable binding-screw, which rod serves to support the work.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar lettersof reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevation of my improved saddlers sewing-horse. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front end View of the same.

The top plate or bench, A, of the usual construction, is supported by three legs, B, which are united by braces G, which are passed through the legs, and are held in the same by means of wedges a. A fixed jaw, D, projects upward from the top of the bench, and adjoining the jaw D a like jaw, E, -is pivoted,

the lower end of which projects some distance below the bench, and is pivoted to a connecting-rod, F, the other end of which is pivoted to an upwardly-projecting arm, G, of a lever, H, pivoted to one of the legs B. The jaw E is jaw D, whereby the upper edges of the jaws, between which the leather, 850., is held, are separated. A rack, K, having downwardlyprojeeting teeth, is fastened to ,one of the legs, and projects from the edge of the same. A metal plate, L, fastened on the free or swing ing end of the foot-lever H, is adapted to en gage with the teeth of the said rack. A rod, M, provided at its upper end with a hook bend, N, passes loosely and vertically through the top of the bench, and can be locked in position by means ofa binding-screw, O. This .rodserves to support large harnesses and other work, so that it will not be in the way of the operator. The jaw D is held on the bench by means of wedges 1?, passed through the lower end of the jaw below the bench. Ordinarily the upper ends of the jaws D E are separated and the free end of the lever H is raised. a piece of work is to be held, it is passed in between the upper end of thejaws and the lever H is. depressed, and is then looked in position by passing the edge of the plate L under one of the teeth of the rack K. The article will be held very firmly between the jaws. The operator has full control of the work, as there are no parts that could interfere with him.

I have provided a drawer, Q, for wax, thread, 850. As the legs and crossbars are all fastened by means of wedges and dovetail mortises and tenons, they can be removed very easily, and the entire apparatus can be folded very compactly for transportation.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a saddlers sewing-horse, the combination, with the bench A, of the fixed jaw D, the pivoted jaw E, the spring .I, attached to both jaws, the connecting-rod F, and the lever H, provided with the arm G, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
