2 Claims. (CI. 81-163) This invention relates to an adjustable wrench and screw driver, and more specifically to a spanner type wrench including means for converting the wrench to a screw driver, and vice versa.
One of the primary objects of this invention is to provide a convertible tool of the type referred to above which is especially designed to reach nuts, bolts and screw heads located in positions normally difiicult to reach with the conventional tools.
Another object of this invention is to provide a convertible wrench and screw driver which is inexpensive to manufacture, noncomplex in assembly and operation, and durable in use.
Other and further objects of this invention will become more apparent from a consideration of the following specification when read in conjunction with the annexed drawing, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a tool constructed in accordance with the teachings of this invention and when utilized as an adjustable type wrench;
Figure 2 is a detail cross-sectional view of the tool shown in Figure l and taken on the vertical plane of the line 2-2 thereof looking in the direction of the arrows;
Figure 3 is a detail cross-sectional view of the tool shown in Figure 1, taken on the vertical plane of line 33 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the tool shown in Figure 1, illustrating the conversion thereof from an adjustable wrench to a screw driver; and
Figure 5 is a front elevation of the tool shown in Figure 4, partly in cross-section.
Referring now more specifically to the drawing, reference numeral 1 designates, in general, a convertible tool constructed in accordance with this invention. The tool comprises an elongated handle 2 which is adapted to receive through one end thereof the upper ends of a pair of elongated shank bars 3, 4 having a substantially rectangular cross-sectional configuration.
The shank bar 3 is bent outwardly and laterally to form an integral shoulder 5 inclined at an obtuse angle thereto, and the outer end of the latter is bent downwardly to create a side portion 6 which is substantially parallel to the shank bar 3. The lower end 7 of the side portion 6 is bent inwardly at right angles to the shank bars 3, 4 and is extended beyond the plane of the latter.
The lower end of the shank bar 4 is bent laterally and downwardly at an obtuse angle to the shank bar 4 to form a shoulder 8. The shoulder 8 continues into the downwardly extending relative short side portion 9 which is substantially parallel to the side portion 6. The lower end 10 of the side portion 9 is bent laterally and inwardly toward the side portion 6 and terminates adjacent thereto. As seen in the drawing, the terminals 7 and 10 of the side portions 6 and 9, respectively, are substantially parallel to each other with the terminal 10 positioned interited mites atent 2,739,500 Patented Mar. 27, 1956 mediate the terminal 7 and the shoulders 5 and 8. The terminals 7 and 10 constitute jaw guide arms.
A pair of flat elongated substantially rectangular jaws in the form of plates 11, 12 are provided with a pair of vertically spaced substantially parallel rectangular slots 13, 14 and 15, 16, respectively, which slidably receive the guide arms 10 and 7, respectively.
Intermediate the slots 13, 14 and 15, 16, the jaws 11, 12 are provided with threaded openings 17, 18, respectively, which receive a headed adjusting screw 19 having right and left handed screws 20, 21. From an inspection of the drawing, it will be understood that rotation of the screw 19 in one direction will cause the jaw plates 11, 12 to move towards each other, while rotation thereof in the opposite direction will efiect relative movement of the plates away from each other.
The lower ends of the jaw plates 11, 12 are provided with elongated horizontal recesses 22 and the adjacent faces thereof are knurled at 23, 24. It will also be noticed that the lower ends of the jaw plates are provided with laterally extending lugs 38, 31 which coact therewith to form an adjustable spanner wrench.
Figures 1 and 2 illustrates the tool of this invention utilized as an adjustable wrench wherein the jaws 11, 12 are adapted for adjustment by the screw 19 to accommodate various sizes of bolts and nuts therebetween. ln Figures 4 and 5 the tool 1 has been converted to a screw driver by the addition of an elongated fiat substantially rectangular bit 25 having a tapered lower end 26 for engagement within the slot formed in the head of a screw.
The bit 25 is formed with a pair of oppositely disposed, substantially rectangular ribs 27, 28 adapted to be received within the recesses 22, 23, and an upper end portion 29 which is gripped between the knurled faces 23, 24 of the jaws 11, 12.
Having described and illustrated one embodiment of this invention in detail, it is to be understood that the same is offered by way of example, and that the invention is to be limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a wrench, shank means terminating at one end in oppositely projecting lateral shoulders, one of said shoulders terminating in a relatively long side portion and the other shoulder terminating in a relatively short side portion, said side portions being parallel to each other, the relatively long side portion terminating in a first lateral jaw guide arm extending toward the short side portion, said short side portion terminating in a second lateral jaw guide extending toward said long side portion, said second jaw guide being spaced between said shoulders and said first jaw guide, and said jaw guides being parallel to each other, a pair of jaws each comprising a plate having a first end and a second end, each of said plates having a first closed slot near said first end slidably receiving said second jaw guide and a second closed slot slidably receiving said first jaw guide, said second closed slot being spaced from the second end of the plates, and a screw threaded through said plates at a point between and spaced from said first and second jaw guides, said shank means comprising a pair of coextensive shanks each terminating in one of said shoulders, and handle means embracing said shanks and securing the shanks together.
