ORNAMENTATION oF wRTsT WATCH STRAPS Filed ned. 3, 1951 March 6, 1956 FIGI.
Unirted States Patent @ffice 2,737,325 Patented Mar. y6, 1956 ORNAMENTATION OF WRIST WATCH STRAPS John F. Sand, Newark, N. J., assignor to Gemex Company, Union, N. J., a corporation of New Jersey Application December 3, 1951Serial No. 259,639
- Claims. '(Cl. 224-4) This invention relates to the ornamentation of wrist watch straps, and more particularly to the ornamentation of wrist watch straps made of leather, suede, silk or the like.
Among the several objects of the invention may be noted the provision of a novel mode of ornamentation for the end of a wrist watch strap which is attached to a wrist watch, and anovel ornament member for use in such ornamentation; the provision of a mode of ornamentation of the class described wherein the ornament member will remain Hat on the strap as worn on` the wrist; the provision of an ornament member for use in conjunction with ornamentation of the class described which may be readily applied to or removed from a strap; the provision of an ornament member of the class described which utilizes the usual end member at the end of the wrist watch strap for securement to the strap; and the provision of an ornament member of the class described which may be economically manufactured and which is subject to ornamentation in various ways. Other features will be in part apparent and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly comprises the elements and combinations of elements, Afeatures of construction, and arrangements of parts which will be exemplified in the structures hereinafter described and the scope of which will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which several of various possible embodiments of the invention are illustrated,
Fig. l is a plan of a wrist watch and associated strap parts having ornament members of this invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. l;
Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on line 4 -4 of Figs. 1 and 3 on the scale of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken on line 5--5 of Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is an elevation of an ornament member of the invention per se; and,
Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 6 but showing a modiication.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, there is represented at 1 a wrist watch having at each end a center lug 3. Each of the two lugs of the watch has a transverse aperture 5 forreception of an end member 7 of the type comprising a tube 9 and a pair of pins 11 biased by spring means 13 in the tube to a position of extension from the ends of the tube for attachment of the watch and wrist watch straps 15 and 17. End members 7 are of a conventional well-known type, and further description thereof is not believed necessary. Straps 15 and 17 are generally much the same, except that 15 has buckle 19 at one end and 17 has a series of holes 21 for receiving the tongue of the buckle. At the end of each strap which is attached to the watch by an end member 7 there is provided an ornament member 23 of this invention.
Each of straps 15 and 17, as herein illustrated, comprises a length of material such as leather, suede, silk or the like, which is doubled back upon itself at its Watchattaching end to form a loop 25 for reception of an end member 7. The loop 25 is divided in two by a central notch 27. The two layers of material in the doubledback end portion are' secured together and to a liner 29 of anysuitable material such as leather by stitching 31. At the watch-attaching end of the strap, this stitching is only at the sides of the strap, so that the two layers of material in the doubled end portion of the strap form a pocket 33 opening rearward from the notch 27 in the loop 25. It will be understood that in making the strap, the notch 27 may be established by punching a slot in the material before folding, and folding the material on a line extending transversely across the slot.
The ornament member 23, as shown in Figs. l-6, comprises a cross-piece 35 having depending sides 37. As shown in Fig. l, the cross-piece is made of generally V- shape in plan to have a notch 38 for accommodation of the center lug 3 of the watch. It may have its own outer or upper surface formed for ornamentation, or any suitable separate ornamentation may be attached thereto, as desired. The ornament member 23 straddles the watch-attaching end of the strap, and its depending sides 37 have aligned openings 39 receiving the pins 11 to hold the member in assembly with the strap and the watch. The strap may be notched out at its sides at its watch-attaching end, as indicated at 41, for the reception of the depending sides 37. The cross-piece also has a tongue 43 which extends rearward into the pocket 33 for the purpose of keeping the cross-piece flat on the strap. It will be understood that without this tongue, the ornament might pivot on the pins 11 and swing up away from the strap.
The tongue 43 is narrower than the distance between the sides 37 and projects in rearward direction away from the line of the openings 39 in a plane below and generally parallel to the plane of the cross-piece (see Fig. 3). More particularly, the tongue extends rearward from the end of a stem 45 depending from the cross-piece. The stem is narrower than the distance between the sides 37, being located centrally between the sides and somewhat forward of the apex of the V-shaped cross-piece.
The cross-piece 35 and its sides 37 may be made in one piece as a sheet metal stamping. The stern and tongue may consist of a separate L-shaped part soldered to the cross-piece. As shown in Figs. 1-6, the sides 37 are constituted by single-thickness flanges integral with the cross-piece, being bent downy at the ends of the crosspiece. With such llanges, the ends of the pins 11 are exposed to View at the sides of the strap. If it is desired to have the ends of the pins concealed, the sides may be made as shown in Fig. 7. As illustrated therein, the sides are constituted by U-shaped portions integral with the cross-piece, the openings 39 for receiving the pins being in the inner sides 47 only of the U-shaped portions. The Fig. 7 form is made by bending down portions 49 from the ends of the cross-piece and bending up the inner sides 47 on the inside of the outer portions 49. Thus, the outer portions 49 conceal the ends of the pins inserted in the openings 39.
In view of the above, it will be seen that the several objects of the invention are achieved and other advantageous results attained.
As many changes could be made in the above con structions without departing from the scope of the nvention it is intended that, al1 matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing, shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
