1 Claim. (Cl. 145-108) This invention relates to a new and improved combination tool, and more particularly, to a device combining a plurality of carpentering tools, etc.
The particular embodiment of the present invention, which is illustrated in the drawings and which will be described hereinafter in greater detail, comprises generally, a base plate adapted to support a plane iron, a side wall on the base plate, a shield alongside of said side wall and pivotally connected thereto, and a tool blade interme diate said shield and said side wall and pivotally connected to said side wall.
It is a principal object of the present invention to provide a simple and efiicient means for performing a plurality of operations with one tool.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a combination tool which will save space and is readily carried in congested areas.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a combination tool which is capable of accurate woodworking operations.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a combination tool which may be combined with saw blades of various sizes and form a pistol grip for said blades.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a combination tool including a plane and an edge guide for the plane.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a combination tool of the type described which is simple and durable, and which is effective for its intended purposes and which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the embodiment of the invention illustrated therein comprises a combination tool generally designated 20, which includes a base plate 21 having a slot 22 extending inwardly from and at right angles to side edge 23 of the base plate. On one side of and adjacent to slot 22 is a sloping portion 23' which supports a plane iron 24. Conventional plane iron actuating mechanism is disposed within the sloping portion 23, its actuating means being screw head '25. A clamping member 26 is disposed over the plane iron 24 and is actuated by the serrated nut 27.
Integral with the base plate 21 is an upstanding side wall 28 which merges with the sloping portion 23'. Also on the base plate adjacent one end thereof is a bulbous portion of knob 29, which knob serves as a handle for planing. The underside 30 of base plate 21 has plane iron 24 extendable therethrough and is smooth for accu rate planing.
Arranged in parallel space relation with respect to the side wall 28 is a shield or plate 31 which is pivotally mounted on knob 29. A spacing washer 32 is positioned intermediate the shield plate and knob, and a hand actuable nut 33 is adapted to hold the shield plate in any selected angular position with respect to side wall 28. Integral with the shield plate 31 and extending along its lower edge is an inturned flange 34, which flange is movable with the shield plate into and out of abutting relation with respect to the under side 30 of base plate 21. In its abutting position, the flange 34 extends along one edge portion of underside 30 and acts as a square or guide for the plane.
A threaded pivot pin 35 extends transversely through side wall 28 and is provided on its inner end with a serrated nut 36. Intermediate the serrated nut and side wall 28 is a clamping plate 37 which is movable toward and away from the side wall and clamped thereagainst by nut 36.
In the space intermediate side wall 28 and shield plate 31 is a tool blade 38. The tool blade is provided adjacent one end with a knife edge 39, and saw teeth 40, and chisel 41. Adjacent the other end is formed a screwdriver 42 and a closure remover 43. The tool blade is mounted intermediate its ends on pivot pin 35 for rotation thereabout. A stud 44 is formed on the outer face 46 of side wall 28 and is selectively receivable in the holes 45 and 45' for holding the tool blade 38 against rotative movement. A washer 47 is disposed interme diate the blade 38 and the head of pivot pin 35 for receiving the portion 48 of shield plate 31 when the latter is in closed position. Thus, by loosening nut 36 either end of blade 38 may be extended beyond the end of side wall 28, stud 44 engaged in the adjacent hole 45 or 45, and nut 36 tightened to hold the stud in the hole.
The pivot pin 35 is also adapted to mount a rip saw 50 having a T-slot 51 extending inwardly from one end thereof. With the nut 36 in loosened condition, the rip saw'50 is inserted intermediate blade 38 and side wall 28 so that the T-slot 51 receives pivot pin 35 and one wing of the T-slot receives stud 44. Nut 36 is then tightened and the rip saw is held against rotation by pivot pin 35 and stud 44. To afford a pistol grip for the rip saw, shield plate 31 is rotated toward the toothed edge of A file may also be attached to the device of Fig. l, as shown in Fig. 11. Nut 36 is revolved toloosenclamping plate 37 and one end of a file 55 is inserted intermediate the clamping plate and the side wall 28. The nut 36 is then revolved to urge the clamping plate to- Ward side wall 28 so that the file is firmly held against side wall 28 and base plate 21.
A saw blade 60 may also be combined with the device of Fig. 1 as a longitudinal extension thereof. The saw blade 60 is provided with a longitudinal slot 61 adjacent to and spaced inwardly from one end thereof and a trans verse notch intermediate the one end and the slot 61. The saw blade 60 is inserted intermediate blade 38 and side Wall 28 with the slot 61 receiving pivot pin 35. The notch 62 will then receive the stud 44 to hold blade 60 against rotation in one direction. This is sufiicient for a sawing operation as force is only exerted against thc toothed edge 63' of blade 60, which force is resisted by the stud 44.
Thus, it is seen that the versatile combination tool of Fig. 1 serves, in addition, as a handle attachment for a variety of other tools.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent In a tool holder, a handle construction comprising an elongated metal body having plane side and bottom walls, a shield plate having an elongated side portion with a flange extending along one longitudinal edge thereof, means to secure a saw blade having a T-slot at one end to the body, said means including a stud projecting from the side wall of the body adjacent one end thereof and a cooperating threaded pin and nut spaced from the stud, means pivotally securing the shield plate to the body in selective angular positions, said means being located at the end of the body opposite from said one end, whereby the free end of the flange on the shield can be positioned to engage the edge of a saw blade between a pair of adjacent teeth while the stud is received within one portion of the T-slot and the threaded pin is received within the other portion thereof to securely hold the blade to the handle.
