Description
C. G. BAEHR Feb. 21, 1956 BINDERS Filed Sept. 26, 1951 ATTORN EY3 United States Patent 1ce BINDERS Cm! G. Baehr, West Haven, Conn., assignor to The Greist Manufacturing Company, New Haven, Conn. a eurporation of Connecticut Application September 26, 1951, Serial N0. 248,336
3 Claims. (Cl. 112-137) This invention relates to sewing machine attachrnents, and more particularly to a sewing machine attachment known as a binder in that it is employed for sewing a binding at the edge of a piece cf material, so that the latter will be embraced by the binding tape or strip. In general, these devices comprise a frame of some kind to which is secured an adapter by which the device may be secured to the presser bar of the sewing machine, and mounted upon the frame is an element termed a scroll, having slots of various lengths to accomrnodate binding strips of Various widths and a central passageway to receive the material, the scroll being so constructed that the binding strip or tape will be folded about the edge of the material disposed in the central slot.
In Order to properly align the binding strip with the edge of the material and also with the needle opening, the frarne of the device is sometimes constructed so that it is adjustable laterally with respect to the adapter, and therefore with respect to the presser bar and needle bar of the sewing machine. As the scroll is carried by this frame it is also laterally adjustable With respect to the needle opening.
The scroll is usually mounted in an inclined position with respect to the frame, and if the scroll is adjusted laleraliy of the frame, i: will be apparent that the adjustment does not take place about the axis of the scroll, or in a plane parallel to the axis of the scroll. In the present construction the scroll is mounted upon an auxiliary frame which is so connected to the main frarne of the device that it may be adjusted angularly so that the adjustment of the scroll will take place substantially about the longitudinal axis of the scroll itself. This auxiliary frame supports the scroll and is provided With an arcuate slot through which are received fastening members connected to the main frame so that the auxiliary frame is frietionally hold in place in any osition of angular adjustment, as permitted by the arcuate slot.
One object of the present invention is to provide a binding altachment for sewing machines, of novel and simple construction.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a binding attachrnent for sewing machines, in which the scroll 1's carried on an auxiliary frame adjustably comnected to the main frarne of the attachment.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a binding attachment for a sewing machine, in which the scroll is mounted on an auxiliary frame secured to the rnain frame so that it may be angularly adjusted, the adjustment taking place substantially about the axis of the scroll.
T0 these and other ends the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a sicle elwational view of a sewing machine attachment embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view from the other side of the device;
2,735388 Patenited Feb. 21, 1956 Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the attachment;
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view thereof;
Fig. 5 is a rear elevational view cf the attachment;
Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 6-6 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 6, showing the parts in another position of adjustment.
T0 illustrate a preferred embodirnent of my invention I have shown a binding attachrnent for sewing machines, including a main frame which comprises a plate 10 to which is adjustably secured the usual adapter 11 which may be secured to the presser bar of the sewing machine. The adapter comprises a body member of L-shaped formalion, and the base 12 thereof underlies a portion of the plate 10. This portion of the frame is provided With an elongated slot 13 through which extends a rivet 14 so that when the adapter is secured to the presser bar the plate 18 may be adjusted laterally with respect to the adapter and presser bar and needle bar of the machine. Below the head of the rivet 14 and above the plate 10 is a bowed spring 15 bearing upon the plate so as to frictionally hold the frame in any position of adjustrnent, and movement of the frame laterally may be conveniently efiected by means of the fingerpiece 16 upstanding from the plate. The latter is also provided with an elongated slot 17 adaptecl to register with the needle opening 18 in the part 12 of the adapter.
The fralne includes an upwardly and rearwardly inclined portion 20 at the rear end of the plate 10, and it is to this portion that the auxiliary frame which carries the scroll is secured. This auxiliary frarne cornprises a forward end portlon 21 which lies flatly upon the portion 20 of the main frarne N. Extending rearwardly from the portion 21 is an arm which comprises a substantially horizontal portion 22 and a downwardly and rearwardly inclined portion 23. Projecting laterally from the part 23 is a downwardly offset portion 24 upon which the scroll 25 is carriecl.
The scroll may be cf usual form and in this instance is provided with a plurality of slots 26 of different length so as to accommodate binding strips 0f different Width. The scroll is tapered in size from its rear end toward its forward end, as is usual, both ends being open so that the material may be received at one end and may emerge at the other end.
The forward or body portion 21 of the auxiliary frame extends over the forward portion 20 of the main frarne, as stated, and this portion of the auxiliary frarne is provided With an arcuate slot 27. A rivet 23 is secured to the portion 20 of the main frame and passes through the slot 27. Under the head of this rivet is a spring Washer 29 so that the auxiliary frame Will be frictionally held in any position to which it is adjusted. A guide pin 30 is also secured to the part 20 of the main frame and received in the slot 27, so that the auxiliary frame will be guided and limited in its arcuate rnovements With respect to the main frame.
It may ba noted that the scroll is supported upon the auxiliary frame at such an angle that its axis is substantially at right anglcs 10 the portion 21 of this frame, and it may also be noted that the arcuate slot 27 is described substantially abont the axis of the scroll as a center. Therefore adjustrnent cf the auxiliary frame as permitted by the arcuate slot 27 will be substantially about the axis of the scroll, and the position of the latter with respect to the needle opening Will be changed only to a slight extent, if at all. The adjustment, however, will change the position of the binding strip With respect to the material so that the upper and lower edges of the binding strip may be positioned as desired with respect to the material.
While I have shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, 1't will be understood that it is not to be limited to all cf the details shown, but is capable 3 of mo di fi c atigq a1;d vapria t iop within the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the claims.
