United States Patent PUSHCART-TYPE ADJUSTABLE ROTARY SAW FOR TIMBER MOWING Isadore J. Rocklin, Sioux City, Iowa Application August 24, 1953, Serial No. 376,618 1 Claim. (Cl. 143-43) My invention relates to an adjustable rotary saw.
An object of my invention is to provide a saw which is mounted upon a carriage, and which saw is of the rotary type, and which saw can be readily converted from a tree cutting type of saw to a log cutting type of saw.
A further object of my invention is to provide a readily operated adjustable feature wherein the saw blade can be converted to either type, and wherein the blade will be rigidly secured after adjustment thereof.
A further object of my invention is to provide an adjustable arrangement working in combination with the various members whereby the belt which operates the saw can be maintained at the desired tension.
A further object of my invention is to provide an arrangement wherein the belt which drives the saw will remain in substantially centered alignment with respect to the pulleys over which the belt travels, regardless of which position the saw is used.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts of my device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of the device with a portion being taken in section,
Figure 2 is a plan view of Figure l with portions being taken in section, and
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional detail taken along the lines 3-3 of Figure l.
I have used the character to designate a channelshaped member having a portion thereof horizontal as shown, and which channel-shaped member extends into the upwardly angularly inclined portion 11.
Attached at 12 to the end of the member 11 is the handle member 13. Attached at 14 to the member 1& is a base 15 having the flanged portions 16, and received within the flanged portions 16 is a motor base member 17 to which is attached an ear 18, and attached to the car 18 is a link 19 which is pivotally attached at 20 to the lever member 21 which is pivoted at 22 to the extending ear 23, the ear 23 being suitably attached to the member 110.
Attached to the base 17 is a gas engine 24 having the usual tank 25, etc, the engine 24 having the shaft 26 driving the pulley 27, over which pulley passes a belt 28. The channel member it extends into the forwardly extending portion 29 in which is received the circular pipe 30.
It will be noted that the portion 29 is of substantial length, and clamping the pipe 30 to the portion 29 is the U-bolt 31 passing through the plate 32, the nuts 33 serving to securely hold the arrangement.
The pipe member 30 extends into the curved or arcuate portion 34 which is secured at 35 to a vertically positioned tube 36 in which is mounted a rotatable shaft, this shaft being secured to the hub portions 37 between which portions are tightly secured a rotary saw blade 33.
Attached at 39 to the upper end of this shaft is a pulley 40 over which the belt 28 passes.
The member 10 is attached to a transverse channel 41 in which are securely welded the stub shafts 42 and upon which shafts are journalled the side wheels 43.

It Will now be noted that when the saw blade is in the position shown in solid lines in Figures 1 and 2 it will saw in a lateral plane, whereby the device can then be used for sawing down trees and the like.
By loosening the nuts 33, and the U-bolt 31, the arrangement can then be swung to the dotted position as shown in both Figures 1 and 2, whereby the blade will then saw in a vertical plane, or can be used for sawing logs into sections and the like.
The dotted lines of Figure 1 indicate the arrangement in the vertical sawing position, with the handle 11 being tipped a certain distance in the direction of the arrow 44 so that the blade can start at a higher elevation.
It will be specifically noted that the substantial length of the member 29 as it engages the pipe 30 provides a lengthened frictional engagement which will keep the parts from rotating, thereby maintaining the saw in a fixed position as desired.
It will also be noted that the off-set portion 34 provides a feature wherein the belt 28 will be in substantially correct alignment with the pulleys 27 and 40 regardless of which position the saw is placed.
It will also be noted that the tension of the belt 28 can be readily adjusted or maintained by use of the lever 21, which when pulled toward the right as viewed in Figure 1 will draw the engine and base in the same direction, thereby effecting the tension required.
Also the tension can be regulated by means of the U- bolt arrangement at 31, since by loosening the U-bolt, the pipe 3t) can be thrust forwardly until the desired tension is just about secured, and next, the lever 21 is thrust to the right, thereby completing the tensioning op- V eration.
It will be noted that the saw can be readily wheeled from place to place, or to any desired location, and will perform any type of operation as specified hereinabove.
It will now be seen that I have provided the various advantages set forth in the objects of my invention with various other advantages being readily apparent.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts of my invention Without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my claim any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents which may be reasonably included within its scope.
I claim as my invention:
An adjustable rotary saw comprising a channel member, a pipe member secured substantially within said channel member, said channel member being of substantial length to provide a substantially long frictional engagement with said pipe member, a shaft rotatably mounted at the termination of said pipe member, a circular saw blade attached to said shaft, means for driving said saw blade shaft, means for rigidly securing said pipe member within said channel member, including a U-bolt straddling said pipe and channel member, a plate member through which the terminals of said U-bolt extend, rotation of said pipe member permitting said saw blade to be selectively operated in any desired plane.
