Description

Jan. 31, 1956 E. L. HAwKlNs SEPARABLE PAINT BRUSH Filed Feb. 28, 1951 United States A Patent 2,732,578 SEPARABLE PAINT BRUSH Ernest L. Hawkins, Chicago, Ill. Application February 28, 1951, Serial No. 213,105 2 Claims. (Cl. 15202) This invention relates to paint brushes.
The principal object of this invention is to provide an improved paint brush having two engaging brush heads, wherein the brush heads may be separated for readily cleaning the brush, wherein the brush heads may be readily and simply and rmly secured together with the brush heads in correct relative position, and wherein the joint between the brush heads is sealed to prevent paint and the like from leaking along the joint between the brush heads.
The paint brush of this invention includes a pair of brush heads having mating and engaging side surfaces. Each brush head includes a ferrule having a flat side and curved ends, bristles carried at one edge of the ferrule and a handle portion carried at the other edge of the fer rule. A recess extends across the at side of each ferrule parallel and between the edges of the ferrule to form a transverse passage through the paint brush when the flat sides of the ferrules are brought together by bringing together the mating and engaging side surfaces of the brush heads. A pair of clips overlie the adjacent curved ends of the ferrules and these clips have holes in alignment with the transverse passage. A bolt ex` tends through the holes in the clips and along the recesses, forming the transverse passage, and a nut carried by the bolt clamps the clips to the ferrules and holds the brush heads together. A resilient sleeve is located on the bolt and engages the ferrules at the recesses for sealing the joint between the hat sides of the ferrules to prevent paint and the like from leaking along the joint between the brush heads.
Further objects of this invention reside in the details of construction of the paint brush and in the cooperative relationship between the component parts thereof.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art upon reference to the accompanying specification, claims and drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the assembled brush of this invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 2 2 of Fig. l and having portions broken away for clarity;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken line 4-4 of Fig. l; and
Fig. 5 is an exploded perspective view of the various parts forming the brush of this invention, showing the brush in disassembled condition.
The brush of this invention is generally designated at and it includes a pair of brush heads 11 and 12 which have mating and engaging side surfaces so that when the two brush heads are secured together a single unitary brush is provided.
The brush head 11 includes a ferrule 13, which has a at side 14 and curved ends 15. The ferrule is preferably Inade from a strip of metal, the ends of which oversubstantially along the substantially along the Patented Jan. 31, 1956 lap at one of the curved ends of the ferrule and are secured together at 16, as by welding. Brush bristles 17 are suitably carried at the lower edge of the ferrule 13, being secured in the ferrule 13 in conventional manner including the use of rivets 18. The brush head 11 also includes a handle portion 19 having a handle 20, the handle portion preferably being made of wood, plastic or the like. The handle portion is carried at the other edge of the ferrule and is secured in place by rivets 21.
The other brush head 12 is similar to the brush head 11. It includes a ferrule 22 having a flat side 23 and curved ends 24, the lap of the ferrule being located at one of the curved ends 24 and being welded together, as indicated at 25. Brush bristles are carried at the lower edge of the ferrule and are Asecured in the ferrule in conventional manner including rivets 27. The brush head 12 also includes a handle portion 28 preferably being made ot wood, plastic or the like and carried at the upper edge of the ferrule. The handle portion 28 may be secured to the ferrule by rivets 29.
The flat sides 14 and 23 of the ferrules 13 and 22 are provided with recesses or slots 31 and 32, respectively, extending thereacross parallel to and between the edges of the ferrule. When the two brush heads are `placed together these slots or recesses 31 and 32 form a transverse passage through the paint brush. A pair of curved clips 34 overlie the adjacent curved ends 15 and 25 of the ferrules 13 and 22 and these clips have holes in alignment with the transverse passage formed by the slots or recesses 31 and 32. A bolt 35 having a head 36 extends through the holes in the clips 34 and along the recesses or slots forming the transverse passage. A nut 37 is screw-threadedly received by the end of the bolt 35 for clamping the clips 34 to the curved ends of the ferrules 13 and 22 for securely holding together the brush heads 11 and 12. Thus, merely by manipulating the nut 37 the brush heads 11 and 12 may be quickly separated for readily cleaning the brush bristles and may be quickly clamped together to form a complete brush.
The rod 35 preferably carries a resilient sleeve 38 made of synthetic rubber or similar material which engages the ferrules at the recesses 31 and 32. This resilient sleeve 38 operates to maintain the two brush heads 11 and 12 in correct relative positions and also operates to seal the joint between the ilat sides 14 and 23 of the ferrules 11 and 12. This eiectively prevents paint and the like from leaking along the joint between the two brush heads 11 and 12.
Preferably the nut 37 is located at the opposite end of the ferrules from the overlapping portions 16 of the ferrules. In this way the overlapped portions of the ferrules counter-balance the weight of the nut 37 to provide a substantially completely balanced brush. If desired, when the brush is disassembled, either brush head 11 or 12 may be used as a paint brush. This is advantageous where a thin brush is desired.
While for purposes of illustration one form of this invention has been disclosed, other forms thereof may become apparent to those skilled in the art upon reference to this disclosure and, therefore, this invention is to be limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
