INVENTOR. 6
WITNESSES ATTORNEYS- 'NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MILLER, or WILLS POINT, TEXAS.
COMBINED CLOD-CRU SHER AND SOD AND STALK CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,123, dated February 27, 1883.
Application filed October 30, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MlLLER, of VVills Point, in the county of Van Zandt and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Glod-Grusher and Sod and Stalk Gutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification, and in whichl ignre 1 is perspective view of my improved stalk-cutter and cl'od-crusher. Fig.2 isa vertical sectional view taken through the rollers. Fig. 3 is asection on the line :0 00, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a sectional detail view of the stalkgathering device.
Oorresponding'parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to an improved combined clod-crusher, sod-cutter, and stalk-cutting machine, the construction of which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings hereto annexed,
- A represents a suitable axle, upon the ends of which a pair of cylindrical rollers, B, of any desired dimensions, are mounted, as shown.
C (J are the thills or shafts, which are attached to the axle A, between the rollers, and connected in front of the latter by a cross-bar, E, having slots D. Adjustable in said slots, in front of each roller, are the stalk-gatherers 1 which are formed of flexible metallic rods or wire by bending the same into A shape, and forming at the point orapex a loop or eye, G, upon which a metallic plate or washer, H, is adjusted. The loop or eye Gr projects upward through the'slot D, above which it receives a wedge, I, serving to hold the stalk-gathering device securely in position. This device, it will be seen, is exceedingly simple and inexpensive, and may be readily detached when the machine is to be used for other purposes than for cutting stalks.
Supported upon the shafts, just in front of the axle, is a box, J, in which stones or other weights may be placed. A suitable springseat, K, for the driver is mounted upon the axle.
The rollersB are each provided with grooves L, longitudinally in direction of their length, to receive the knives or cutters M. The latter are provided at their. ends with notches Nto receive the bands 0, which are adjusted upon the ends of the rollers, and which thusserve to hold the knives or cuttersin position. The notches N form projections n from the lower part of the end of the cutters, overwhich the loopor ring 0 is slipped, while the beveled upper parts, n, of the ends of the cutters project over the ring.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. It may be used equally well and effectively as a clod-crusher, as a sod-cutter, or as a stalk-cutter.
The entire machine is exceedingly simple, and may be constructed at atritling cost.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination, with the slotted beam E, of the stalk-gathering device consisting of the bent wires or rods forming eyes G, and diverging -at their lower ends, and held in place by the plate or washers H below the beam and wedge I above the beam, all arranged and operating as set forth.
2. The combination, with the 'stalkgatherin g device described, of the frame, the slotted cross-bar, and the rollers having cutting-blades, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence ot two witnesses.
JOHN MILLER.
