2 Claims. (Cl. 311-6) This invention relates to operating tables and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide an operating table, a hospital bed, an emergency household bed, or the like which may be tilted longitudinally or transversely and held rigidly in the tilted position and which may also be rotated about a vertical axis intermediate its ends.
Another object of the invention is to provide an operating table or the like in which the individual supported therein is enveloped in a cover which protects him from exterior media and prevents him from falling from the table.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description considered in conjunction with the attached drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the operating table of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the assembly of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the assembly of Figures 1 and 2 with the platform in a horizontal position.
Figure 4 is a view of the assembly of Figure 3 with the platform in a transversely tilted position.
Figure 5 is a detail view, partially in section, showing the means of connection between the platform and the standard of the present invention.
Figure 6 is a view taken along the line 6-6 of Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a view taken along the line 77 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral 15 designates a base having an extensive flat bottom surface adapted to rest firmly upon a floor surface. Rising from the base 15 is a standard 16, the upper end portion of which is externally threaded, as shown at 17, and the upper end of which is shaped to form a ball socket 18.
Upon the top of the standard 16 is a platform 20 connected, intermediate its ends, to the standard 16 for longitudinal and transverse tilting movement and for rotary movement about the standard 16. The platform 20 is adapted to support a human body in reclining position and may be covered with a mattress or pad 21 for the comfort of the individual supported thereon. The platform 20 is connected to the standard 16 by a stem 22 which extends downwardly from the lower surface of the platform 20 and carries a ball 23 on its lower end which seats in the socket 18 in the upper end of the standard 16. The upper end of the stem 22 is provided with a transverse flange 23a which abuts the lower surface of the platform 20 and is secured thereto by appropriate connecting means.
Surrounding the standard 16, adjacent the lower end thereof, is a frame 25 supported by the base 15. The frame 25 consists of a ring mounted upon uprights 26 extending upwardly from the base 15.
A pair of arms 30, each having its lower end slidably supported on the frame 25, is arranged in upwardly diverging relation. The arms 30 are connected to the frame 25 2,730,415 Patented Jan. 10, 1956 by split bushings 31, formed on the lower ends of the arms 30, which slidably engage the frame 25 and may move therearound without striking the uprights 26.
A second pair of arms 35, having their lower ends pivotally connected to the upper ends of the first pair of arms 30, are arranged in upwardly converging relation. The connected ends of the arms 30 and 35 are provided with means for releasably securing the said arms selectively in any of their pivotal movement positions. Specifically, the connected ends of the arms 30 and 35 overlap and are connected by bolts 36. Wing nuts 37 threadably engage the bolts 36 and when tightened thereon secure the'arms 30 and 35 in the relative position they occupy at the time.
Arranged transversely of and depending from the platform 20, adjacent each end thereof, is a bracket 40, having an arcuate shaped slot 41 extending longitudinally thereof. Means, consisting of a bolt 42 and wing nut 43, are carried by the upper end of each of the second pair of arms 35 and are engageable in the slot 41 of the adjacent bracket 40 for securing the platform 20 in any selected position of its transverse tilting movement. The curvature of the slots 41 in the brackets 40 is such as to accommodate the connection between the brackets 41 and the upper ends of the arms 35 when the platform 20 executes its tilting movements.
Surrounding the standard 16, intermediate its ends, is a sleeve 45 having an outwardly extending fiange 46 on its upper end. The sleeve 45 is connected to the standard 16 for movement from its intermediate position on the standard to a position in which the flange 46 abuts the lower surface of the platform 20. Specifically the sleeve 45 carries internal threading which engages the threading 17 upon the upper portion of the standard 16 and causes the upward and downward movement of the sleeve 45 upon the standard 16 when the sleeve 45 is rotated about the standard 16in the appropriate direction. Radially disposed handles 47 project outwardly from the sleeve 45 and serve as a means for manually turning the sleeve 45 upon the standard 16.
In covering relation to the platform 20, is a cover 50, adapted to cover an individual lying upon the platform 20 and detachably secured to the edge of the platform 20 by fastening means 51. The head portion 52 of the cover 50 is provided with a plurality of screened ventilating openings 53. The midportion of the cover 50 has a centrally disposed opening 54 therein through which the body of an individual lying upon the platform 20 may be reached. The portion of the cover 50 covering the legs and feet of an individual lying upon the platform 20 is divided into two longitudinal sections which overlap and are connected together by fastening means 55. A pair of straps 56 encircle the cover 50 and the adjacent portions of the platform 20 at spaced positions and are adapted to have their end portions secured together selectively at spaced intervals by fastening means 57 to hold an individual in place upon the platform 20 during the tilting movements of the platform 20. The cover 50 and straps 56 are preferably fabricated of transparent plastic material so that the entire body of an individual lying upon the platform 20 will be visible although covered by the cover 50.
When the table of the present invention is in use with the platform 20 in its normal horizontal position, the sleeve 45 is turned upwardly upon the standard 16 until its flange 46 abuts the lower surface of the platform 20 and holds the platform 29 rigidly in the horizontal position. If it is now desired to tip the platform 20 longitudinally, the sleeve 45 is lowered upon the standard 16 from the platform-abutting position, as shown in Figure 2, to a position below the upper end of the standard 16, as shown in Figure 4. The wing nuts 37 are then loosened to permit pivotal movement of the arms 30 and 35 with respect to each other and the platform is then tipped longitudinally to the desired angle and held at that angle until the wing nuts 37 are again tightened, at which time the arms 30 and 35 will hold the platform 20 in the tilted position. At any time when the platform 20 is tilted longitudinally or when it is flat, it may be tilted transversely to either side by the mere loosening of the wing nuts 43 to permit the bolts 42 to slide in the arcuate slots 41. The platform 20 may then be tilted to the desired transverse angle and the wing nuts 43 tightened to hold the platform at that angle. It is to be noted that when the platform is to be tilted longitudinally or transversely, or both longitudinally and transversely, the sleeve 45 must first be lowered so as to expose the top of the standard 16 and free the ball 23 and stem 22 for movement in the socket 18. At any time, whether the platform is in a level position or in any tilted position, it may be rotated about the standard 16 as an axis. By merely applying pressure to one side of the platform 20, the ball 23 will be caused to rotate in the socket 18 and the platform 20 will turn carrying with it the arms 35 and 30, the lower ends of the latter being free to turn upon the frame 25 in conformity with the turning of the platform 20, it being unnecessary to disturb the settings of the arms 30 and 35 with respect to each other or the settings of the arms 35 with respect to the brackets 40 for the rotation of the platform 20 upon the standard 16.
As the foregoing description indicates, the operating table of the present invention provides a sturdy support for an individual in a reclining position which may be firmly based upon a floor surface, although having only one standard or leg, and which may easily and simply be adjusted to tilting positions either longitudinally or transversely and which may be rotated about its vertical support while in any of its tilted positions.
What is claimed is:
1. An operating table comprising a base, a standard rising from said base, a platform upon the top of said standard and connected thereto intermediate its ends for longitudinal and transverse tilting movements and for rotary movement thereabout, a frame surrounding said standard adjacent the lower end thereof and supported by said base, a pair of arms arranged in an upwardly diverging relation and each having the lower end slidably supported on said frame, a second pair of arms arranged in an upwardly converging relation and having the lower ends pivotally connected to the upper ends of said first pair of arms, means upon the connected ends of said first and second pairs of arms for releasably securing said arms selectively in any of their pivotal movement positions, said platform being connected to the upper ends of said second pair of arms for transverse tilting movement, and cooperating means upon said platform and the upper ends of said second pair of arms for rele'asably securing said platform selectively in any of its transverse tilting movement positions.
2. An operating table comprising a base, a standard rising from said base, a platform upon the top of said standard and connected thereto intermediate its ends for longitudinal and transverse tilting movements and for rotary movement thereabout, a frame surrounding said standard adjacent the lower end thereof and supported by said base, a pair of arms arranged in an upwardly diverging relation and each having the lower end slidably supported on said frame, a second pair of arms arranged in an upwardly converging relation and having the lower ends pivotally connected to the upper ends of said first pair of arms, means upon the connected ends of said first and second pairs of arms for releasably securing said arms selectively in any of their pivotal movement positions, a bracket arranged transversely of and depending from said platform adjacent each end thereof, each of said brackets having an arcuate shaped slot extending longitudinally thereof, and means carried by the upper end of each of said second pair of arms and engageable in said slot for releasably securing said platform I in any selected position of its transverse tilting movement.
