Description

United States Patent REMOVAL OF VANADIUM AND/0R SODIUM FROM PETROLEUM PETROLEUM PRODUCTS WITH TITANIA 0N ALUMFNA AND HYDROFINING Frederick William Bertram Porter and Roy Purdy Northcott, Sunbury-on-Thames, England, assignors to The British Petroleum Company Limited No Drawing. Application July 1, 1953, Serial No. 365,520
application Great Britain July 14, 1952 3 Claims. (Cl. 196-24) Claims priority,
This invention relates to a process for reducing the content of vanadium and/or sodium in petroleum and petroleum products.
In the complete specification of the co-pending application Ser. No. 1,029/51 there was described a process in which the content of vanadium and/or leum or bauxite in the presence dium are/is deposited on the contact material.
The contact material preferably contains from 140% by weight of TiOz the remainder consisting essentially of alumina.
The preferred ranges of operating conditions for the process are as follows:
Space velocity v./v./hr 0.5 to 2.0
Temperature F. 750 to 800 Pressure p. s. i. ga 500 to 1,500 Hydrogen recycle rate S. C. F./B l,000 to 10,000
For example, of crude petroleum and petroleum residues using a catalyst consisting of cobalt and molybdenum oxides supported on alumina, substantial propor- 2,730,487 Patented Jan. 10, 1956 2 tions of vanadium and posited on the catalyst and this deposition causes a steady decline This invention, therefore, also includes a continuous process wherein a petroleum feedstock containing vanadium and/or sodium is first treated with titania on alumina, as above described, and is then passed to a hydrogenation zone for the removal of organically combined sulphur.
An example of the application of the invention to the treatment of a petroleum residue will now be given.
Example Sodium and vanadium removal from Kuwait 53% volume residue.
Conditions employed:
Feedstock Kuwait 53% vol. residue. Space velocity 1.0 v./v./l1r. Temperature 780 F. (416 C.) Pressure 1000 p. s. i. ga.
Hydrogen recycle rate 4000 S. C. F./B. Direction of flow Upward. Duration of test 50 hours.
Results obtained: Titania on alumina (4.70 wt. TiOz).
Product Feedstock (bulk over 50 hrs.)

ulphur, percent Wt Specific Gravity, F./60 F We claim:
F. and at a pressure within the range 500-1500 p. s. i. ga. whereby vanadium and sodium are deposited on the contact material.
2. A process according to claim 1, wherein the contact material contains from 1-10% by weight of TiOz, the remainder consisting essentially of alumina.
3. A process according to claim 1, wherein the treated feedstock is subsequently passed to a hydrogenation zone for the removal of organically combined sulphur.
