Claims. (Cl. 222-457) My invention relates to a parts storage box or bin for containing rivets, bolts, etc., and for making the same accessible to be removed by the fingers or one hand for use as wanted.

An object of the invention is to provide a portable box or bin for the purpose stated having a handle, by which the same may be carried from place to place where needed and having a drawer, which when closed or pushed in will scoop up a certain amount of the parts contained in the box and when slid outwardly to open position, will render the said parts accessible to be removed.

Another object of the invention is to provide a box, which when the drawer is slid in, will not jam the parts at the back or interfere with the closing'thereof, but will tend to move said parts out of the way and to scoop them onto the sliding drawer.

A still further object is to provide means for guiding the sliding drawer in its movements and for limiting the opening movement thereof, as well as to provide a normally open closure for the top of the drawer and an extension of the box, which closure or lid when in closed position will engage with the front of the drawer to provide a catch to hold the lid closed and which upon releasing the catch will automatically open.

A further object of the invention is to provide a parts storage box or bin which may be made cheaply of metal or other suitable material and which will be strong and durable.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent as the description proceeds and the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts pointed out, but it is to be understood that changes and modifications may be resorted to within the scope of the claimed invention without departing from the principles and spirit thereof.

Figure 2 is a vertically longitudinally sectional view of the box showing the manner of inserting or removing the drawer, the drawer being open in solid lines with the lid open and in dotted lines in closed position.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the box generally designated at has a back wall 11 curved forwardly at its lower portion as indicated at 12, sides 13 and a front 14. The back and sides extended down to the bottom 15 at the lower part and forwardly of the curved portion 12 which extends forwardly of the front wall a short distance as indicated at 16 and upwardly at an obtuse angle at the sides 13, the front edges of which are inclined rearwardly in a downwardly direction as indicated at 17 so that the front wall 14 terminates at about the same height as the forward extension of the lower portions of the sides 13.

At the top, the box is provided with a hinged cover 18, hinged along the top edge of the back 11 as indicated at 19 and over-hanging the sides 13 and the front 14 by means of a depending flange 20. i

r A plate or hinge leaf 21 is secured centrally to the front 14 by riveting, welding or otherwise to provide a pair of ears 22 spaced from the top edge of the box. The flange 20 is provided with an ear 23 adapted to fit between the ears 22 to take a key 24 therethrough. For this purpose, the key may be in the form of a cotterpin with the rebent loop at one end offset laterally and the jaws or legs springing together so that one leg 25 is shorter than the other 26 and slightly bent away from the same to facilitate insertion of the longer leg 26 through the ears 22 and 23 to secure the cover 18 in closed position. A strap handle or the like 27 is provided on the cover for transporting the box.

A sliding drawer 28 fits through the open lower portion of the box beneath the front wall 14 and its bottom wall 29,slides on the bottom 15 of-the box proper with the sides 30 disposed immediately within the sides 13 of the box. The rear end of the bottom 29 of the drawer may be formed with an upturned angularly rebent end 31 bent back or forwardly at an acute angle and thenclosing of the drawer. 'The front of the drawer 28 is formed on the same angle as the front edges of the lower side extensions at the front of the side walls 13. At the sides 30 of the drawer 28, the lower corners are mitered or beveled as indicated at 32 to a point in rear of the rebent end 31 and rib formed thereby in the manner of a scoop. Vertically along the extensions of the rear ends of the sides 30, vertical strips 33 are riveted or otherwise secured and these strips project above the lower edge of the front wall 14 to form stop lugs 34, which upon the drawer being opened, will engage inside said front wall 14 at the bottom thereof to limit the opening of the drawer. However, the drawer may beinserted at an angle as shown in Figure 2 by projecting the stop lugs 34 beneath the lower edge of the front wall 14 through the opening at this point. These lugs are designed to move and be guided beneath angular or ogee guide strips or channels 35 riveted or otherwise secured horizontally against the inner faces of the sides 13 extending rearwardly from the inner face of the front 14 to the desired distance in spaced relation to the back or rear wall 11. Thus, the drawer 28 may be grasped by its handle or knob 36 attached to the inclined front thereof and slid inwardly to closed position or pulled out to open position when the parts within the box are accessible to the fingers or hand for removing any number of parts desired as wanted.

In order to close the space between the top edges of the front of the drawer 28, the sides 30 and the lower end of the front 14 of the box, a lid 37 is hinged to the curved bottom edge 38 of the front 14 and one or more contractile coil springs 39 are mounted on the hinged pintle 40, by which the lid 37 is hinged at the ears formed at the adjacent edges of the front 14 and lid 37 so that the spring arms normally raise the lid and cause it to snap open toward or against the front 14, especially when the drawer is pulled out. This is particularly desired, since the top edges of the front and wide lower portion 43 of the slot 42 and a narrow portion 47-which will enter the narrow portion 44- of the slot 42; when the drawer is pushed or slid into a closed position, to serve as a safety catch and hold the lid closed over the top. openingbetween the sides and the frontof tlie drawer and lower edge of the front 14 of the box providing the lid 37: is held. down by pressing thereonwhen the drawer is closed. However, by pressing downon. the. extension 45, the catch may pass through the Wide. portion 43? of the. slot or opening 42 and permit thedrawerto be pulled out to open position with thebolts, nuts, rivetsor other parts upon the bottom of the drawer after. they have been scooped or deposited thereon automatically by pushing in thedrawer. When the. extension 45- is. released, the lid 37 will, due to the winding of the springs 39, by the lowering thereof, be automatically snapped to an open position as seen in full lines in Figure2. Thus, the contents of the drawer will be. readily accessible for removing one or more of the. parts for use. The device is compact, strong and durable, and by opening the cover 18, the box may be filled; with, the parts. to be automatically fed into the drawer upon the act of closing the latter. When the cover 18 is closed and fastened by the key or cotterpin 24, theidevice may be. transported much like a valise or toolboxby grasping the handle 27.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

1. A parts storage box comprising four sides and a box bottom, the front side being spaced from the bottom to form a drawer opening, a rounded portion connecting the back side tothe box bottom, a scoop shaped drawerhaving a leading. free edge entering the box adjacent thebottom thereof and slidable through said drawer opening, a, rib. along said. free edge, and. said. free edge oil the bottom of said drawer being at the intersection of said box bottom and said rounded portion when said drawer is moved to its inner position whereby small parts in said box are pushed upwardly on said rounded portion by said free edge.

2. A parts storage born as in claim 1, further comprising side portions projecting beyond said front side and coextensive with saiddrawer.

3. A parts, storage box as in claim 2, further comprising a spring held lid attached to said front side and extending oversaid drawer-between said projecting side portions.

4. A parts storage box as in claim 3, further comprising a bayonet latch between said lid and said drawer composed of a tongue on said lid and a slot in said drawer.

5. A parts storage box as in claim 4, further comprising guides secured to the inner walls ofthe sides of the box, lugs-secured-to said drawer and projectingabove the upper edges of-said dra-werrandslidable in said guides, and said lugs being engageable with the front side of said box and forming; a stop limiting the outward; movement of said drawer.
