Description

Dec. 20, 1955 F/QZ H. N. BROWNLEE ET AL WINDOW OPENER AND FASTENER Filed June 5, 1955 INVENTOR. A E/Q5Eer /V- 5eowlv4ss Wars/-52 YP. A254 061/ ATTORNEYS United States Patent WINDOW OPENER AND FASTENER Herbert N. Brownlee and Walter P. Carbaugh, Chambersburg, Pa.
Application June 5, 1953, Serial No. 359,884 1 Claim. (Cl. 292276) This invention relates to a device for facilitating the opening of a swingable window sash, and the retention of the sash in its opened position.
An important object of the present invention is to provide an improved device of the character referred to, which will permit the sash to be securely locked in each position to which it is opened, through the medium of an improved locking means engageable against a rod that extends between the swingable sash and an associated window frame.
Another object of importance is to provide a device as stated wherein said rod will be pivotally connected to the window frame, for swinging movement toward and away from said frame, the sash having a slidable mounting in a ball element swivelly mounted on a hinge device carried by the swinging sash, the construction being so designed as to permit the rod to be locked in selected positions to which it is slidably adjusted within said ball element.
Another object of importance is to provide a device of the character stated which can be applied to conventional swinging window sashes, without requiring modification or redesign of said sashes.
Another object of importance is to provide a sash adjusting and holding means which can be manufactured at relatively low cost, and can be applied to or removed from an associated window with a minimum of difliculty.
Other objects will appear from the following description, the claim appended thereto, and from the annexed drawing, in which like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a window opening and fastening device formed in accordance with the present invention, the dotted lines indicating a selected position to which the swinging sash and locking device can be adjusted, a wall in which the window is mounted being illustrated fragmentarily;
Figure 2 is an enlarged front elevational view of the opening and fastening device, a sash and window frame being illustrated fragmentarily; and
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken substantially on line 3-3 of Figure 2, portions being broken away.
At W we have designated a building wall, having a window frame mounted therein. A swinging sash i2 is hingedly connected, along one rail thereof, to the window frame 10, by means of conventional hinges 14.
Our invention has been designated generally by the referencenumeral 16, and includes a fixed mounting plate 18 of relatively narrow, rectangular configuration, said mounting plate being integrally or otherwise rigidly provided with outwardly extended, transversely spaced cars 22 having transversely aligned openings receiving the opposite ends of a pivot pin 24.
A relatively elongated rod 26 is, in the illustrated embodiment of the invention, of solid, circular cross sectional configuration, said rod being flattened at one end and having a transverse opening formed in its flattened ice end through which the pivot pin 24 extends, thereby to mount the rod for swinging movement toward and away from the plane of the window frame 10.
Intermediate its ends, the rod 26 extends through an opening 28 formed in a ball element 30 integrally provided with an inwardly extended stud 32 terminating in a foot 34, said stud and foot being swivelled in a complementarily shaped recess 36 of a base 38 rigidly secured to a movable hinge leaf 40. Hinge leaf 40 is connected by means of a hinge pin 42 to a fixed hinge leaf 44 secured by screws 46 or equivalent fastening elements to the sash frame 12.
That end of the rod 26 remote from the pivotal connection 24 is formed with a knob or ball member 48, limiting movement of the shaft in one direction within the opening 28.
A set screw 50 is threadedly engaged in a complementarily threaded opening 52 formed in ball element 30 and communicating with opening 28. Set screw 50 is adapted to be threaded against rod 26 in selected positions to which the rod is adjusted, relative to the ball element 30.
By reason of the construction illustrated and described, it will be seen that when the sash 12 is in closed position, the parts will be disposed as shown in full lines in Figure 1. In this position of the parts, the set screw 50 can be manually rotated to lock the parts against relative movement. The sash is thus locked in a closed position, to prevent unauthorized entry.
If it is desired to adjust the sash to a selected open position the knob or set screw 50 is loosened, thereby permitting the sash to swing outwardly to a position such as shown, for example, in dotted outline in Figure 1.
When the sash is being swung away from the window frame 10, the hinge leaf 40 will pivot about the hinge axis defined by pin 42, to allow for the swinging movement of the sash and rod 26. When the sash has been located at the selected position relative to the window frame 10, the set screw or knob 50 can again be turned home within its associated opening 52, so as to lock the rod 26 to the ball element 30.
The construction has certain important characteristics, and among these is the arrangement wherein the device can be secured to conventional window sashes and frames, without requiring modification or redesign thereof. Fur ther, the device permits the sash to be readily adjusted to any selected position, and locked in the position chosen.
Still further, once the device is locked, it will hold the sash securely against movement from the selected position of swingable adjustment thereof.
The invention, it should be noted, can be used on steel or metal of any kind, or on plastic sash.
It is believed apparent that the invention is not necessarily confined to the specific use or uses thereof described above, since it may be utilized for any purpose to which it may be suited. Nor is the invention to be necessarily limited to the specific construction illustrated and described, since such construction is only intended to be illustrative of the principles of operation and the means presently devised to carry out said principles, it being considered that the invention comprehends any minor change in construction that may be permitted within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claim'ed is:
A device for opening and fastening a window sash of the type pivotally connected along one edge of one side of a window frame, comprising: a rod adapted to be pivotally connected at one end to the other side of the frame for swinging movement about an axis paralleling the pivot axis of the sash; a hinge adapted to be secured to the sash along that sash edge opposite said one edge thereof, said hinge including a hinge leaf hinged to the sash to swing about an axis disposed close to said opposite sash 3 edge in parallelism with the sash pivot axis, the hinge leaf extending from its pivot axis inwardly of the sash and being in parallelism with the sash, in the closed position of the sash; a base on said hinge leaf spaced inwardly'fromthe hinge leaf axis,- said base having a recess; a ball element having aninwardly extending stud terminating in a foot which is engaged in said recess, sa'id element projecting outwardly from the hinge leaf and having atits approximate center thereof a transverse opening, said rod being loosely and slidably engaged in the opening; and a set screw threaded in the ball element and extendable into said opening to bind against the rod 4 and hold the same against slidable movement relative to the ball element, said hinge leaf swinging outwardly from the sash on pivoting of the sash to open position.
