4 Claims. (Cl. 105-406) This invention relates, generally, to railway car construction and, more particularly, relates to that part of the car at the junction of the longitudinalside walls and transverse crossbeam and is more specially concerned with dumping cars wherein the main part of the floor is composed mainly of dumping doors.
The objects of the invention, among others are: To provide a side stake structure wherein strains incidental to shocks caused by dropping dumping doors will be communicated more directly to the car side stakes than has been the practice in the conventional type of car wherein door operating shafts arejournalled in the crossbeams and the latter in turn are secured to side stakes; to provide a structure wherein a door operating shaft is supported by the side stakes as well as by the crossbeams and to this end the invention con templates the formation of side stakes each having an extended body platearea which overlies the crossbeam and having the shaft bearings secured to both the side stake and the crossbeam. Another object of the invention is to providea side stake construction employing horizontally and vertically extendingZ-shapedmembers disposed in intersecting relation to provide for lateral and longitudinal bracing between the car sides and crossbeams.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide for an improved stake construction wherein attaching walls are formed by offsetting a portion of the plate in the form of a warp to provide an upper wall section for attachment to the car side wall and a lower portion of extended area for attachment to the crossbeam.
For further comprehension of the invention reference may be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal elevational view of a portion of a dump car showing the doors in closed position;
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken through the car at a location corresponding to a line 2-2 of Figure 1, the left-hand side of said view showing the door in opened position and the right-hand side of said View showing the door in closed position;
Figure 3 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale taken through the car side and the associated crossbeam;
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of the structure shown in Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view taken through the stake as viewed on a line 5-5 of Figure 4.
In said drawings, particularly Figure 2, 110 indicates the center sill of the car, 111111 the side walls each including a vertically disposed plate 112 and a lower marginal reinforcement as indicated at 114 in the form of an angle member having one flange 115 secured to the plate 112 and having the adjacent flange 116 extending inwardly to form a horizontal ledge. Extending outwardly from the center sill 110 towards the side of the car are crossmembers 117.
The crossmembers 117 preferably include pan-shaped ICC diaphragms 118 each including a web 119 and flanges. at the top, bottom, and ends as indicated at 120, 121, 122, and123, respectively. The diaphragms 118 are disposed on opposite sides of the center sill in transversely aligned relation and united across the plane of the center sill by bottom and top plates indicated at 124 and. 125, respectively, the latter being extended clear across the car to overlap and unite with the outstanding flange 116 of the angle member 114.
The crossmembers 117 are spaced lengthwise of the car and intermediate the respective crossmembers are dumping doors 126 which are pivotally mounted at 127 on hinge butts 128 which in turn are preferably rivetted to the center sill 110.
The dumping doors 126 are adapted to be lifted to closed position in multiples and there retained by. an operating shaft 129 which is mounted in. elongated bearings 130 mounted at the outer ends of the crossmembers 117. The shaft 129 is provided with winding hubs 131' and connecting said hubs with the doors 126 are links 132, 133, 134, and 135 which fold around the hubs 131 upon rotation of the latter to raise the doors 126, it be-. ing understood that the linkage operates to support the doors 126 in opened position. The shaft 129 at. the end of the winding operation moves bodily in bearings 130 to a supporting position beneath the doors 126 to support them in closed position.
The diaphragms 118 of the crossmembers 117 project outwardly beyond the car side walls 111 and are rigidly united with the latter. through the medium of horizontally and vertically extending members 136 and 137. The horizontal member 136, Figures 4 and 5, is of Z-shape with a web 138 and flange walls 139 and 140. The said web 138 extends horizontally and is united with the top flange 120 of the diaphragm 118 and the flange walls 139 and 140 respectively overlie the car side wall 111 and end flange 123 of the diaphragm 118.
The vertically extending Z-shaped member 137 functions as a vertical stake and includes a Wall portion 141, Figure 3, of extended area which overlies the web 119 of the diaphragm 118 and is riveted thereto as at 142. The wall portion 141 is extended beneath the outstanding lower marginal reinforcement 114 of the car side wall 111 and the extended portion of the wall 141 adjacent the car side wall 111 is deflected outwardly to form the inner flange 143 of the Z-shaped upper section of the stake. The outer flange 144 of the Z-shaped member 137 overlies the flange wall 140 of the member 136 and as the latter in turn overlies the flange 123 of the diaphragm 118 there is provided a three ply overlap, Figures 3 and 5, of the walls 123, 140 and 144 which are rigidly united together by rivets 145.
The shaft supporting bearings 130 are riveted to the extended wall portion 141 of the side stakes by rivets 146 which also extend through the diaphragm web 119 of the diaphragm 118 thereby providing for directly supporting the operating shaft from the side stakes as well as by the crossbeams. The extended area of the wall portion 141 results in a strong foundation to prevent overturning of the stakes and the longitudinally extending brackets thoroughly brace the crossmember against overturning displacement. The two-way bracing provided by the intersecting bracing members 136 and 137 is of special importance in a dump car of the identified type wherein the floor area is largely composed of door openings and the limitation of fixed floor area renders the car vulnerable to racking and distortion.
The method of forming the member or stake 137 which involves the warping of a section of plate as at 141 to present walls in right angular relation provides for unbroken continuity of reinforcement in the transition from one plane to the other.
' What is claimed as new is:
1. In a railway car, the combination with a longitudinally extending car side wall having an inwardly directed horizontally extending lower marginal flange portion and a transversely extending crossbeam diaphragm member projecting outwardly beyond the said wall, said member including a substantially vertically disposed web and top and end flanges extending outwardly from the web; of a Z-shaped gusset memberextending lengthwise along the side of the car with the web resting on the top flange of the crossbeam diaphragm and having oppositely directed inner and outer flange walls connected to the side wall of the car and to the end flange of the diaphragm respectively, and a vertically disposed stake having a web secured to the crossbeam diaphragm and outer and inner flanges overlying the outer flange of the gusset member and side Wall of the car respectively, said outer flange being secured to the outer flange of the gusset member and to the end flange of the crossbeam diaphragm.
2. In a railway car including a longitudinally extending side wall and a crossbeam extending transversely across the plane of the side wall and beneath the same, said crossbeam having an end flange extending lengthwise of the car, and intersecting Z-shaped members spanning the distance intermediate the end flange of the crossbeam and side wall of the car, one of said Z-shaped members extending substantially horizontally with the inner and outer flanges respectively overlying the car side wall and end flange of the crossbeam and said other Z-shaped member being vertically disposed with a Web thereof secured to the crossbeam and the inner and outer flanges respectively overlying the car side wall and outer flange of the horizontally extending bracket member.
3. In a railway car the combination with a longitudinally extending car side wall having an inwardly directed horizontally extending lower margin portion and a transversely extending crossbeam member extending beneath the side wall and projecting outwardly beyond the said wall, said member including a substantially vertically extending web and end flange portion, of a side stake of generally Z-shape having a web secured to the web of the crossbeam and flanges secured respectively to the car side wall and end flange of the crossbeam,
and a Z-shaped gusset member having one of its flange walls connected to the car side wall and having the other flange wall sandwiched between the outer flange of the stake and the end flange of the crossbeam member.
4. In a railway car having a center sill, longitudinally spaced cross members extending transversely of said center sill and underneath said side walls whereby the bottom of the car is provided with openings forming a large portion thereof resulting in a corresponding reduction of the resistance of the .car to racking due to buffing shocks and the like incident to operation thereof, each cross member including a central vertical web with a vertical end flange outstanding therefrom at the outer end, pairs of dump doors between adjacent cross members hinged to said center sill with the swinging edges adjacent the respective car side Walls when the doors are in closed position, and operating shafts along the swinging edges of said doors in closed position for supporting them in such position; in combination, a side stake of generally Z-shape having a web secured to said web of each cross member and flanges secured respectively to the adjacent car side wall and said end flange of said cross member, the lower end of the flange secured to a side wall being deflected to overlie the respective web of each cross member and form a flat heel portion extending underneath the respective side wall', said heel portion being apertured to receive one of said shafts therethrough, a bearing secured to each heel portion of each stake for supporting said shaft, and a Z-shaped gusset member individual to each side stake having one flange connected to the adjacent side wall and the other flange sandwich between said end flange of said cross member and said flange of said stake secured thereto.
