DENTAL PLUGGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,986, dated February 6, 1883.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEoEeE REHEUss, a citizen'ot' the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Dental Pluggers, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in den tul plnggers similar ingeneral construction and operation to that described in Patent No. 264,756, granted September 19, 1882, the present invention relating to a modification of that form of plugger adapted to be driven from an external shaft instead of by a spring carried by the instrument itself.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal section of sufficientof the plugger to illustrate myinven'tion; Fig. 2, atransverse section of part of the same, and Fig. 3 a sectional plan view.
A is the tubular stem orhand-piece of the plugger; G, the plug-rod, and Hthe hammer for acting upon the upper end of said rod, this hammer being hung to a rock-shaft, m, which has pallets 1;, adapted to engage with the teeth of the pallet-wheel M, so that as said wheel M is rotated a rapid vibrating movemeut will be imparted to the hammer and a series of blows delivered upon the plug-rod. In the patented instrument the wheel M was rotated by a coiled spring acting through the medium of a system of gearing; but in the present case this spring and gearing are dispensed with, the instrument being intended for use in connection with the shaft of a dental engine or other source of power.
The shaft may be connected directly to the projecting end of the spindle w of the wheel M; but as it is preferable to have the instrument in line with the shaft I provide the spindle to with a worm-wheel, N, which is adapted to engage with a worm, K, on a shaft, or, the hammer and its operating mechanism being contained in a casing, B, at the end of the stem A, as usual, and the shaft 00 projecting from this casing, so as to be readily attached to thedrivingshaft. That portion of the shaft m which is within the casing is adapted to bearings a on an arm, Z), the latter being pivoted to the casing at the upper end and free to swing at the lower end, so as to carry the worm into oroutofengagement with the wormwheel. This movement of the arm is efi'ected by means of a sliding tube, D, in the handpiece, said tube having an inclined lug, d, adapted to act upon a similar lug, e, on the lower bearing, a, a spring, f, acting upon the upper bearing and tending to keep the lugs d and 6 always in contact with each other.
The sleeve D is similar to the locking and releasing sleeveD of the patented instrument above alluded to, and is operated in the same way, the sleeve being depressed in order to throw the worm K into gear with the wormwheel when it is desired to operate the hammer, or beingelevated so as to permit the worm to be thrown out of gear with the worm-wheel when it is desired to stop the vibration of the hammer.
The force of the blow delivered by the plugger is regulated by the adjustment of a fric- 7o tion-spring, g, which bears upon one side of the plug-rod G, and is acted upon by a setscrew, it, adapted to a threaded opening in the tubular casing A, the friction of the spring upon the rod being governed by the adjustment of said screw.
The sleeve D is slotted for thereception of the spring, and the set-screw his of tubular form, for the reception of a pin, a, which projects from the back of the spring, said pin preventing the springfrom dropping out ofplace if the set-screw is entirely removed from the casing.
In carrying out my invention other means than the worm and worm-Wheel may be employed for transmitting power from the shaft 00 to the spindle of the wheel M. For instance,
a bevel-gear on the shaft may engage with a bevel-pinion on the spindle. The worm and worm-wheel are, however, preferred. c
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of the stem A and plugrod Got a dental plugging-instrument with a pivoted hammer, H, a toothed wheel for operati n g the same, and a projectin g shaft adapted 9 5 to be driven by power, and having a drivingconnection with the spindle of said wheel, as specified.
