6 Claims. (Cl. 51-263) My invention relates to polishing apparatus for glass plates and particularly to an adjustable rouge trough hanger to position the end of a rouge trough over a runner.
The primary object of my invention is to provide means for adjustably supporting the end of a rouge trough over the rouge trunk of a rotatable runner so that the end of the trough over the trunk may extend in an adjusted position generally in the direction of rotation of the runner.
Another object of my invention is to provide a highly flexible support for the inner end of the rouge trough positioned over an annular rouge trunk at the center of a rotatable runner such that the end may be adjustably positioned over the rouge trunk to point in the particular direction of rotation of the runner.
A further object of my invention is to provide an adjustable rouge trough hanger which includes a horizontally disposed bar positionable over the rouge trunk at the center of a polishing runner wherein the horizontal bar has a plurality of spaced apart slotspositioned proximal to its upper edge to receive a hook slidably positionable therealong and having a depending end provided with a hook to receive the end of the rouge trough.
A still further object of my invention is to provide hanger means for a removable rouge trough that may be easily positioned over the rotatable runner and the rouge trunk thereof in a glass polishing apparatus such that the trunk may be easily removed and positioned in the general direction of rotation of the runner.
A further object of my invention is to provide a safety mounting means for the rouge trough above a rotatable runner such that should the rouge trough become disengaged from the support over the rotating runner no damage will be done to the apparatus nor will the operator be endangered.
For a more complete understanding of the nature and scope of my invention reference may be had to the following drawing and description in which:
Fig. l is a plan view of a reversely rotatable runner in a glass polishing apparatus having an adjustably supported rouge trough;
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the apparatus in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical elevation along section line 3-3 of Fig. 2 showing the adjustable hanger for the rouge trough and its mounting;
Fig. 4 is a further enlarged side elevation of the adjustably positionable hanger for the rouge trough as viewed along line 4-4 in Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a group of disassembled parts for adjustably supporting the end of the rouge trough.
Throughout the various figures and description of the invention like reference numerals refer to similar parts.
A glass polishing apparatus is generally indicated at and includes the customary spider 11 disposed in a horizontal position and rotatable by the vertically positioned shaft 12. Supported beneath the spider 11 are a plurality of polishing blocks or felts 13 which in the particular representation have an outer ring of spaced apart felts and an inner ring of spaced apart felts, the latter of which is indicated at 13, see Fig. 1. These polishing blocks and their felts polish a glass plate such as indicated at P in Fig. 2.
In carrying out the polishing operation it is necessary to supply a polishing lubricant such an rouge and this is applied by means of the annular rouge trunk 14 disposed about the vertical driveshaft 12. Leading from the rouge trunk or pan 14 at the bottom thereof are a plurality of conduits 15 which conduct the rouge to a position adjacent each of the polishing blocks 13. All of this is customary apparatus for carrying out the polishing operation of plate glass P.
The rouge is supplied to the rouge trunk 14 through a rouge trough generally indicated at 16 which has its outer end curved as at 16' and extending vertically and terminating in a funnel receiving end 17 while its lower end 18 extends downwardly and is positioned above the rouge trunk 14. Above the funnel 17 is positioned a supply conduit 18 leading to a rouge supply (not shown). The upper end 17 of the rouge trough 16 and particularly the funnel 17 is supported by bifurcated brackets 19-19 protruding from an overhead column or support generally indicated at 20.
In Fig. 1 it will be noted that the runner 11 is rotating in a counterclockwise direction as indicated by the arrow at the right-hand side thereof. However, in the polishing operation reverse rotation of the runner 11 is necessary to carry out the polishing and to even out the wear on the felts generally indicated at 13.
It is highly desirable that the rouge trough 16 be supported above the rouge trunk 14 in a safe manner such that should it become loose it will not damage the apparatus nor would its engagement with the apparatus cause injury to the operator. In order to carry this out it is highly desirable that the rouge trough 16 point in the general direction of the rotation of the runner over the rouge trunk 14.
To carry this support means of the rouge trough 16 into practice I have provided a horizontally disposed bar or rod generally indicated at 39, see Fig. 3, which is in the form of an elongated bolt having a head 31 and a threaded end 32. This bolt 30 has cut therein in its upper face or upper portion a plurality of spaced apart notches 33. Spaced apart overhead beams are generally indicated at A and B in Fig. 3 and it is from these overhead beams that I support the horizontally disposed rod or bar 30. In order to mount the rod or bar 30 I provide a Z-shaped bracket 34 which has its upstanding leg 35 welded to the beam A as at 36 While its depending leg 37 is apertured at 37, see Fig. 5, and receives the bolt 39 with thehead 31 thereof abutting the depending leg 37 of the Z-shaped bracket 34. The threaded end 32 of rod 30 is received in an aperture 38' in .21. depending plate 38 which is welded as at 39-39 to the overhead beam B. A pair of nuts 40-40 are received over the threaded end 32 of rod 30. These nuts 4%) are received over the threaded end 32 of rod 30 and abut opposite sides of depending plate 38 to hold the rod in a firm position in brackets 34 and 38.
Received over the rod 30 is an eye 43 of a depending rod-like bracket generally indicated at 41. Eye 43 is formed on the upper end of the vertically extending rod portion 42 While an eye 44 is formed on the lower end of vertically extending rod portion 42.. The eye 43 is received over the rod 30 and is adjustably positioned in any one of the selected slots 33 as best shown in Figures 3 and 4.
When it is desired to reverse the rotation of the runner 10 it is first brought to a stop. The support 41 is raised slightly so that the upper eye 43 is removed from the slot 33 and slid along bar 30 so that the rouge trough supported end 18 in eye 44 is moved toward the other end of bar 32. The eye 43 is lowered into' a selected slot 33 at the other end of bar 30, the lower end in Fig. 1, and then the runner is caused to rotate clockwise. The rouge trough 16 now points generally in the direction of rotation of the runner 10. The rouge trough 16 may be removed from the eye 44 by merely lifting it up slightly and pulling its funnel end 17 out from its bifurcated supports 19-19.
The adjustable rouge trough hanger is easily installed. The hanger 41 may be moved easily along the notched bar 33 to any selected position where the end 18 of rouge trough 16 is to be supported over the annular rouge trunk 14 which rotates with the runner 10.
Should the rouge trough 16 fall from its supported position which extends its end in the direction of rotation of the runner 10, it might bump on the spider 11 but it will not damage the apparatus nor will it endanger the operator.
I claim as my invention:
1. A glass polishing apparatus comprising in combination, a reversible rotatable runner, a plurality of polishing blocks and felts carried thereby, an annular rouge supply trunk positioned about the center of rotation of said runner and having dispensing means connected therewith that lead to said polishing felts to supply polishing rouge thereto, a rouge supply trough suspended over said annular rouge trunk and means supporting the end of said trough over said trunk to extend in the general direction of rotation of said reversible rotatable runner, said means comprising a generally horizontally extending bar having a plurality of spaced apart notches proximal to its upper edge, a depending support rod having an upper hook slidably received over said bar and adjustably positionable therealong and held in one of said notches, said rod having a depending portion with an attached eye through which is removably received and supported the end of said rouge, trough over said annular supply trough so as to extend in the general direction of rotation of said runner.
2. Glass polishing apparatus according to claim 1 including a pair of apertured support brackets positioned adjacent the ends of said horizontal bar with said bar extending through said apertures and said bar having a plurality of spaced apart notches formed in its upper surface to receive the hook on said depending support rod positionable therealong.
3. Glass polishing apparatus according to claim 2 wherein saidhorizontal notched bar is in the form of a bolt having a head at one end abutting one of said support brackets and the other end threaded to receive nuts to be tightened to abut each side of said support bracket at the threaded end.
4. Glass polishing apparatus according to claim 3 wherein said support rod has an eye at its upper end which extends generally transverse to said bolt and is received over said bolt in an adjustable position in a selected notch thereon and the eye at the other end of said support rod lies in a plane extending generally perpendicular to the plane of said upper eye.
5. In a glass plate polishing apparatus having a reversible rotating runner, a plurality of polishing blocks or felts carried by the underneath side of the runner and an annular rouge supply trunk carried by and rotatable with the rotatable runner at the center thereof to supply polishing rouge to the felts, the improvement comprising an adjustably positionable rouge trough suspended over the rouge trunk and positionable to either side of the center of rotation of the runner to extend in the general direction of rotation of the runner and over the annular rouge trunk, and means for adjustably supporting the rouge trough end over the rotatable annular rouge supply trunk in an adjusted position to either side of the center of the runner, said support means comprising a horizontally disposed bar having spaced apart notches proximal to the upper surface thereof, support means for each end of said notched rod and suspension means slidable along the bar and depending therefrom to be positioned at any selected place along the rod and held from movement therealong by resting in one of said notches, said depending suspension means having a lower end adapted to support the end of a rouge trough over said annular rouge trunk, said rouge trough extending outward from and beyond said runner to receive rougerand transfer it to said annular rouge supply trunk.
6. In a glass plate polishing apparatus having a reversible rotating runner, a plurality of polishing blocks or felts carried by the underneath side of the runner and an annular rouge supply trunk carried by and rotatable with the rotatable runner at the center thereof to supply polishing rouge to the felts, the improvement comprising an adjustably positionable rouge trough suspended over the rouge trunk and positionable to either side of the center of rotation of the runner to extend in the general direction of rotation of the runner and over the annular rouge trunk, and means for adjustably supporting the rouge trough end over the rotatable annular rouge supply trunk in an adjusted position to either side of the center of the runner, said adjustable support means comprising a horizontally disposed member supported adjacent said apparatus, a slidable supporting means engaged with said horizontally disposed member and adapted to be positioned at any selected place along said member, and means for selectively securing said slidable supporting means to said horizontally disposed member at a selected position therealong, said slidable supporting means having means spaced from said horizontally disposed member for supporting the end of the rouge trough over said annular rouge trunk, said rouge trough extending out- 2 ward from and beyond said runner to receive rouge and transfer it to said annular rouge supply trunk.
