ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. WHITE, ()F- ESGANABA, MICHIGAN.
COAL AND ORE CHUTE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,386, dated January SO, 1883.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. WHITE, of Escanaba, in the county of Delta and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Ooal and ()re Chute, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists of improvements in the construction of chutes employed for coal ore, and other like materials on docks and other places where it is required to have the chutes hinged to the bins at the doors through which the materials are to be delivered't'or swinging up and down to connect and disconnect with the vessels, cars, and other conveyances to be loaded, the said improved construction being designed to provide more durable and effective chutes than those now in use, all as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is partly a side elevation and partly a sectional elevation of my improved coal and ore chute. Fig. 2 is a. front elevation ot'the same, hnlfot'the spout only being shown. Fig. 3 is a section of Fig. l on the line 00 as with the gate omitted.
I propose to make the spout a of sheet-iron or boiler-plate, instead of wood, as heretofore made, either using a single long plate when available'in suitable length for the purpose or or shorter ones when preferred, the short ones beingla 'iped and riveted together, as shown at-b, and the whole bent up lengthwise in suitable form for a spout, either in circular or angular form, and with square or rounded corners. When the spout is made of short plates lapped and riveted together the joints will be so lapped by inserting the lower ends of the sections inside of the upper ends as to avoid any projections of the edges of the plates that would obstruct the flowing of the matter to be discharged. The spout thus constructed I propose to connect to the bin 0 with two angle-plates, d, attachedto the inside of the Application filed November 25, 1882. (No model.)
bin at e, and extending out through the open ing for the discharge of the coal or ore alongside of the postsf, but suitably distant therefrom to enable me to arrange the sides 9 of the spout between them, and other plates h,
attached directly to the posts for pivoting the spout thereat on pivotst', fitted in said plates d and lb. The plates d extend to the top of the opening for the discharge of the coal, and have the door j pivoted to them at k bya cross-bar, 1, attached to the top of the door. The said angle-plates d are designed mainly for the protection of the corners of the posts from damage by the coal and. ore flowing out of the bin, and, together with an apron, m, fixed in the bottom of the opening, so that the bottom of the trough will swing under it, and as the sides lap plates (1 on the outside they prevent anywaste of coalor ore through openings at the joints, as in other chutes. The door is permanently fixed on its pivots k and rests at the lower end on the flowing matters escaping from the bin when open, so that it may be used as a means to regulate the flow and to stop the same altogether, when desired.
It is fastened by the slide-bolt a when shut.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l. The combination, in a coal-chute, of a spout, a, and angle-plates d, with the bin 0, posts f, and plates IL, substantially as described.
2. The spout a, having the sides 9, arranged between plates d. and plates h, and pivoted to them, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the angle-plates d with the posts f, spout a, and door j, hinged to the plates 61 at k, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with the bin 0, provided with the apron m, fitted in the bottom of its discharge-opening, of the spout a, hinged to said bin, and adapted to swing under the apron, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
GEORGE H. WHITE. Witnesses:
LESTER J. BARR, JOSIAH SYMoNs.
