4 Claims. (Cl. 40126) This invention relates to a display, carton which simulates a tube of the type used for tooth paste and the like.
An object of this invention is to provide a display carton formed of paperboard which simulates an enlarged tube of this type.
A further object of this invention is to provide a display carton including a tubular member representing the body portion of the tube and a second tubular member representing the cap thereof, and means for attaching the cap to the body portion without the use of adhesives.
A further object of this invention is to provide a display carton of this type formed entirely of paperboard sections which can be shipped flat and can readily be set up and assembled without need for any tools or adhesives.
The above and other objects and features of this invention will in part be apparent and will in part be obvious from the following detailed description, and the drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation showing a display carton constructed in accordance with an embodiment of this invention, the carton being shown supported on a display stand;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view in rear elevation of the carton illustrated in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view in lengthwise section of the cap end of the carton;
Fig. 4 is a view in section taken along a line IVIV in Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a view in section taken along a line V--V in Fig. 2;
Fig. 6 is a view in section taken along a line VIVI in Fig. 1;
Fig. 7 is a plan view showing a blank for forming the body portion of the carton;
Fig. 8 is a plan view of a blank for a spreader disk which forms a portion of the carton;
Fig. 9 is a plan view of a blank for a connecting member thereof;
Fig. 10 is a plan view of the cap portion of the carton; and
Fig. 11 is a plan view of a blank for the display stand.
In the following detailed description and the drawings, like reference characters indicate like parts.
As illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, a carton 12 constructed in accordance with an embodiment of this invention includes a tubular body portion 13, a tubular cap portion 14 and a connecting member or conical disk 16, all of which are formed from paperboard sheets.
The tubular body portion is formed from a blank 17 shown in Fig. 7. Blank 17 is generally rectangular in shape, as shown. Along one side edge of the blank are provided tabs 18, 18a and 18b. The tabs 18, 18a and 18b are received in slots 19 along the opposite side edge. When the tabs are seated in slots 19, the blank is formed into a tube. As shown, each of the tabs is provided with a locking slot 20 by means of which the tabs are locked in the slots 19.
One end of the blank 17 carries an end-closing flap 21. Flap 21 folds over and closes the end, as shown in Fig. 2. The flap 21 includes tabs 22 and 23, which are received in slots 24 and 26, respectively, to hold flap 21 in place closing the end of the body portion. The closed end of the body portion represents the closed end of a tooth paste tube or the like. As shown, the portion of the end just above flap 21, as shown in Fig. 7, is provided with parallel score lines 26 to represent the crimped edge of a tube.
At the opposite end of blank 17 are provided a plurality of tabs 27. Each tab 27 is provided with a slot 28 which extends transversely of the blank when the blank is flat. Tabs 27 are hinged to the end of blank 17 and, when the blank is set up to form a portion of a display carton, tabs 27 are folded inside the body portion, as shown in Fig. 3. When the carton is set up, the slots 28 are disposed on the circumference of a circle around the axis of the body portion.
When the carton is set up, the end to whichtabs 27 are attached is held open by a flat spreader disc 29 (Figs. 3 and 8). Disc 29 is provided with a plurality of outwardly projecting lugs 30. Each of the lugs 30 is received in one of the slots 28 so that the spreader disc is firmly held in the open end of the body portion to hold the end open. As shown in Fig. 8, the disc 29 is provided with a central hand opening 30'. The disc 29 can be grasped at opening 30' for ease of insertion into the body portion 13.
Connecting member 16 is formed from a blank shown in Fig. 9. This blank is in the form of a split ring and includes a tab 31 at one end thereof which is received in a slot 32 at the other end thereof. When the tab 31 is seated in slot 32, the connecting member, as shown in Fig. 3, is set up in substantially frusto-conic shape. The connecting member 16 is provided with a plurality of outwardly extending lugs 33 at the periphery thereof. Lugs 33 are received in slots 28 as shown in Fig. 3. In addition, connecting member 16 contains a plurality of spaced slots 34 which are disposed inwardly of the peripheral edge thereof. Each slot 34 is generally of U- shape and includes an arcuate cut forming a tongue 34 at one side of the slot. The slots 34 are used for attaching cap portion 14 to the rest of the carton.
The cap portion of the carton is formed from a blank illustrated in Fig. 10. This blank includes a body section 35 and an end closing disc 36. At one end of the body portion are provided tabs 37. Tabs 37 are received in slots 38 at the other end thereof to set up the cap portion. When the cap portion is set up, the body section is in the form of a frustrum of a cone, and end closing disc 36 closes the small end thereof. Along one edge, the cap portion is provided with a plurality of lugs 39 which are received in the slots 34 of the connecting member to connect the cap portion to the rest of the display carton. As shown, each lug 39 is provided with an arcuate slot 39 for receiving one of the tongues 34'. Tongues 34' interlock with arcuate slots 39' to lock the cap portion in place on the connecting member. When the cap portion is in place, the cap portion surrounds the small end of the connecting member, as shown in Fig. 3. The opposite edge of the blank 36 is provided with a plurality of lugs 41. Each of the lugs 41 is hinged to the blank 36 and is provided with a slot 42 for receiving end closing disc 36. End closing disc 36 is hinged to the body section 35 and is provided with outwardly projecting lugs 44 which are received in the slots 42.
As shown in Fig. 2, the linear edges of the body portion overlap, and a space is provided between lugs 18a and 18b for receiving a carton supporting display stand 50, as shown in Figs. 1, 6 and 11. The display stand is folded, as shown in Figs. 1 and 6, to have a frontsupporting portion 51 and a rear-supporting portion 52. Rear-supporting portion 52 includes an upwardly projecting tab 53 which is received in the space between tabs 18a and 18b.
When mounted on the display stand, the display carton has the appearance of being a tremendous tube of tooth paste or the like. The display carton can be shipped in a small space because all of the members thereof can be shipped flat, yet, all of the members can quickly and easily be erected and interconnected to quickly and easily form the display carton shown in the drawings.
The display carton illustrated in the drawings and described above is subject to structural modification without departing from the spirit or scope of the appended claims.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A display carton which comprises a tubular body having an open end, a plurality of tabs hinged to said open end and turned inwardly thereof, each of said tabs containing a slot, the slots being disposed on the circumference of a circle around the axis of the body, a disc mounted in said open end, there being a plurality of spaced outwardly projecting lugs on the periphery of said disc, the lugs of the disc being seated in said slots, there being a plurality of circumferentially extending, spaced slots in said disc spaced inwardly from the periphery thereof, and another tubular body having an open end mounted on said disk, there being a plurality of tabs at the open end of said other tubular body, the tabs of the other tubular body being received in the slots of the disk.

A display carton in accordance with claim 1, characterized by the fact that the disc is frusto-conic in shape with the small end thereof projecting into the other tubular body and that another disc is mounted in the open end of the first mentioned tubular body, said other disc being fiat and having a plurality of radially projecting lugs received in said slots to hold the open end of the first mentioned tubular body in open position.

A display carton which comprises a tubular body having an open end, said open end having a plurality of tabs turned inwardly thereof, each of said tabs containing a slot, the slots being disposed on the circumference of a circle around the axis of the body, a disk mounted in said open end and provided with a plurality of spaced, outwardly projecting lugs on the periphery thereof seated in said slots, said disk having a plurality of circumferentially extending, spaced slots spaced inwardly of the periphery thereof, another tubular body mounted on said disk, and having at one end a plurality of tabs extending into the slots of said disk, said other tubular body having at its opposite end a plurality of inwardly turned tabs, each of said last mentioned tabs containing a slot, the slots in said last mentioned tabs being equi-distant from the axis of the other tubular body, and a flat disk closing the outer end of said other tubular body, said flat disk having a plurality of spaced, outwardly projecting lugs on the periphery thereof extending into the tab slots of said other tubular body.
4. A display carton in accordance with claim 3, characterized by the fact that the fiat disk is integral with the outer end of said other tubular body.
