1 Claim. (Cl. 33-2) This invention relates to a cult` locating and marking device particularly for use with mens trousers and the like.

One of the objects of this invention is to provide a device for use in measuring and marking trouser legs to permit the cuff portions thereof to be properly measured and marked so that the cuffs may be readily made.

Another object of this invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device for measuring and marking the cuff portions of trouser legs, and whereby said work may be done accurately and quickly by an inexperienced person.

The prior art cuilc marking devices, such for example as that shown in Patent 2,574,148, are objectionable in that while they permits the cuffs to be marked, they provide no means for locating the device on the trouser leg with respect to the crotch portion of the trousers. It is therefore an object of this invention to provide means for properly locating and measuring the distance on the trouser leg at which the cuff markings should be made.

Other objects will become apparent as this description progresses.

The marking device is made preferably of a single cardboard sheeting 8 which is cut as shown in Fig. l and folded along a center line 10 as a hinge to provide the two sections or plates 12 and 14. Section 12 which s.

forms the back portion is of rectangular shape and is provided with 3 spaced longitudinal slots 16, 18 and 20. The portion below slot 20 is marked and ruled as generally indicated at 22 with inch and half inch markings starting from the bottom edge thereof. Section 12 is also provided with a semi-circular cutout 24 along its outer side edge to facilitate separating the sections.

Section 14 is also of rectangular shape and of the same length as section 12, but the bottom edge 26 thereof Y coincides or is in horizontal alinement with the top of slot 20. Section 14 is provided with two spaced longitudinal slots 30 and 32 similar to slots 16 and 18 and align with slots 16 and 1S when the two sections are folded or positioned adjacent each other. Secured by staples or the like as at 34 to the back of the upper portions of section 14 centrally of the length is a flexible measuring tape 36. The tape is provided at its inner end with an unmeasured portion and is secured to section 14 so that the end of the tape from which the measurement markings begin coincides with the upper edge of Section 14. Thus the trst inch of the tape will be the inch from the top edge of section 14.

Openings 38 are provided in each of the sections which align when the sections are closed. These openings are used for hanging the device on a nail or the like.

The device is used in the following manner.

Assuming for example that it is desired to provide a cuff 33 inches from the crotch portion of the trouser leg, the tape 36 will be used to locate the portion where the sections 12 and 14 are placed on the trouser leg. With the trouser leg positioned between the sections or plates 12 and 14 as shown in Fig. 2 the 33 inch marking of the tape is positioned adjacent the crotch portion of the trousers and the tape is then extended along the trouser leg. This locates the top edge of the sections 12 and 14, the proper distance namely 33 inches from the crotch. To insure accurate measuring the4 tape should be superimposed on the longitudinal seam line (not shown) of the trouser leg which is normally along half the width of the trouser leg.

With the sections 12 and 14 properly positioned the chalk or marking lines may now be made.

Chalk mark line A is made along the top edge of the device. Chalk mark B along slot 30. Line C along slot 32 and line D along the bottom edge of section 14. The device and the trouser leg may be then turned over on the opposite side with section 12 on top, or the device as positioned in Fig. 2 may be turned upward along the line A as a folding line and similar markings like line A, B, C and D made on the opposite side of the trouser leg by using the top edge of section 12 and slots 16, 18 and 2t) respectively. The trouser leg is cut off along lines D and is then folded and secured as a cufr" as shown in Fig. 3. Line A is used as the first fold line of the cuff and substantially forms the bottom of the trouser leg. The first fold is upwardly as indicated by the numeral 1, the next fold is on fold line B as indicated at 2, with the final fold on line C upwardly as indicated at 3. The fold on line C encloses and is contiguous to fold line A, with the inner side of the cuit terminating on the cut off line D.

In making straight bottom or no cuil trousers, the cut oit would be made on line B formed along slots 30 or 16, with the fold section 1 of the trouser leg folded inwardly on line A and secured inside the trouser leg.

The space or height between the top edgeof the sections and their respective top slot is 11/2 inches as is also the spaces between each of the slots. The slots are of suiiicient width to accommodate the conventional marking chalk. Therefore the cuff will be approximately 1% inches. If desired other spaced slots may be provided.

The ruler markings 22 on the bottom of section 12 may be used for additionally lining up the trousers. For example if the device is not properly centered with respect to the trouser leg and should be slightly tilted, it will be detected by a quick glance at the ruler markings, for the opposite ends of the trouser leg should be on the same horizontal plane and hence on the same ruler markings.

With this invention, I have provided a very simple and inexpensive measuring and marking device which may be readily and quickly handled by the inexperienced as well as experienced.

It will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.

I claim:
