- This invention relates to safety razor construction, the primary object of the invention being to provide a safety razor wherein the head or blade holding section thereof may be adjusted to various angular positions with respect to the handle, to meet the requirements of use.

4 Claims. (Cl. 30-59) This invention relates to safety razor construction, the primary object of the invention being to provide a safety razor wherein the head or blade holding section thereof may be adjusted to various angular positions with respect to the handle, to meet the requirements of use.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein the guard plate of the razor is securely held in its blade clamping position by the means provided for securing the head in its positions of angular adjustment.
Still another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the guard plate may be readily swung vertically to its open position to remove or replace a blade, by applying pressure to one end of the guard plate flange which extends through a slot extending through the longitudinal axis of the main plate of the head of the razor.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a safety razor wherein the head thereof may be moved to a position parallel with the longitudinal axis of the handle, to provide a razor which is used in the samemanner as the conventional straight razor.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a safety razor constructed in accordance with the invention, the guard plate of the razor having been moved to its open position as shown in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 1, illustrating the latch as moved to a releasing position as shown in dotted lines.
Figure 3 is a view illustrating the head of a razor with the guard plate thereof swung to an open position.
Figure 4 is a plan view thereof, taken on line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line 55 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a front elevational view of the handle and latch.
Figure 7 is an edge elevational view of the handle and latch with the head of the razor removed.
Figure 8 is a fragmental elevational view illustrating the head of the razor as moved to an angular position with respect to the handle.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the handle of the razor is indicated by the reference character 5 and as shown, the handle is provided with a cut away portion extending inwardly from one end thereof providing an opening 6 in which the head of the safety razor is pivotally mounted.
A latch member indicated by the reference character 2,769,297 Patented May 31, 1955 7 is pivotally connected with the handle at 8, the pivot point of the latch member being intermediate the ends of the latch member.
A pin 9 extends laterally from the inner end of the latch 7, which pin provides a support for one end of the coiled spring 10 which is seated in the recess 11 formed in the handle, the coiled spring acting to bias the inner end of the latch '7 outwardly with the result that the other end of the latch member moves inwardly. The head of the razor comprises the head plate 12 which is formed with a central longitudinal slot 13 and the longitudinal slots 14 disposed in parallel relation with the longitudinal side edges of the head plate 12, as better shown by Figure 4 of the drawing.
Depending from the lower surface of the head plate 12 is a yoke 15 which is substantially U-shaped in formation with its open side disposed opposite to the central longitudinal slot 13 in such a way as to communicate with said slot 13.
A guard plate indicated by the reference character 18 is connected to one end of the head plate 12, by means of the hinge 19 so that the guard plate may swing over the head plate clamping a razor blade between the head plate and the guard plate 18. Extending from the lower surface of the guard plate 18, and disposed intermediate the side edges thereof, is a plate 20 which is of a width to fit within the yoke 15, the plate 20 having a line of openings 21 that are adapted to register with the openings 16 of the yoke 15. When the guard plate 18 is swung to a position to grip a razor blade between the guard plate and the head plate. The pin 17 will move into the registering openings of the plate 29 and yoke 15, to hold the head of the razor in its adjusted positions with respect to the handle so that the razor blade mounted within the head of the razor may be used at various angles with respect to the handle, to meet the requirements of use.
An adjusting screw 21 extends inwardly to a position within the yoke 15 where it provides an adjustable stop for the guard plate 18, by its contact with the lower edge of the plate 20, as shown by Figure 8 of the drawing, thereby regulating the clearance between the head plate 12 and guard plate 18 for close or semi-close shaves.
The head plate 12 is pivotally connected with the handle of the razor by means of the pivot pin 22 which extends through the yoke 15 and is so disposed that the curved notch 23 of the plate 20 will fit over the pivot pin 22 when the guard plate 18 is swung to a position in contact with the outer surface of the head plate 12, thereby permitting movement of the guard plate 18 to a position to grip the razor blade 24.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided a safety razor blade wherein the head is so connected with the handle that it may be moved to various angular positions with respect to the handle, or to a position wherein the side faces of the head will lie in parallel relation with the edges of the handle to the end that the razor may be used in the same maimer as a straight razor and still possess the safety qualities of the conventional safety razor.
it will also be seen that due to the construction shown, the guard plate 18 may be swung to the dotted line position as shown by Figure l of the drawing by merely pressing the lower end of the latch 7 to withdraw the pin 17 of the latch from the openings of the head plate and guard plate and pressing the end of the plate 20 at A, whereupon the guard plate will swing to a position spaced from the head plate to receive a razor blade therebetween. After the blade has been positioned, the guard plate is returned to the position as shown by Figure 2 of the drawing, whereupon the latch 7 is released with the result that the pin 17 moves into registering openings of the head plate and guard plate, securely locking the razor blade within the head of the razor.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed is:
l. A safety razor comprising a handle, a head including a head plate and a guard plate hingedly connected to one end of said head plate, said head plate having a slot disposed along the longitudinal center thereof, a U-shaped yoke secured to the lower surface of said head plate with the open side thereof registering with said slot, a pin extending through said yoke and handle pivotally connecting said head to said handle, a flange extending from said guard plate adapted to move into said slot,
said handle, yoke and flange of the guard plate having lines of registering openings, and a latch on said handle adapted to move into said openings securing said head in various angular positions with respect to said handle.
2. A safety razor comprising a handle having an opening extending inwardly from one end thereof, a head including a head plate having an opening extending throughout the longitudinal axis of the head plate, a U-shaped yoke having its open side disposed directly under said opening, secured to said head plate, a pivot pin extending through said handle and through said yoke pivotally connecting said head plate to the handle, a guard plate hinge-city connected at one end of said head plate, adapted to overlie said head plate clamping a razor blade between said guard plate and head plate, a plate extending from the lower surface of said guard plate adapted to move into said opening and yoke, said handle, yoke and plate extending from the guard plate having aligning openings, and a latch extending into said aligning openings for securing the head plate in various angular positions with respect to the handle.
3. A safety razor comprising a handle, a head including a head plate pivotally connected to said handle, a yoke secured to said head plate, said head plate having an elongated opening, said yoke being of substantially U-shape with its open side disposed opposite to said opening of the head plate, a guard plate hingedly connected at one end of the head plate, a plate extending inwardly from the guard plate. movable into said opening of the head plate and yoke, means for securing said head guard plate hinged-1y connected to one end of said head plate movable into contact with the head plate in clamping a razor blade therebetween, a plate extending from said guard plate movable into the opening and yoke of said head plate, one end of said plate of the guard plate extending beyond the handle for effecting pivotal movement of said guard plate away from said head plate when pressure is directed to one end of said plate extending from the guard plate swinging said guard plate to its open position, and means for securing said head plate and guard plate in various angular positions of adjustment with respect to the handle.
