HOT WATER TANK Filed Aug. 4, 1952 INVENTOR Z ee ZCoo ver BY & i y z 2,
9 ATTORNEYS United States Patent HOT WATER TANK Lee A. Cooper, Ojus, Fla.
Application August 4, 1952, Serial No. 302,519
1 Claim. (Cl. 122--13) This invention relates to hot water tanks.
An object of this invention is'to provide an improved hot water tank wherein the incoming cold water is discharged into the bottom portion of the tank from a series of pipes which depend from the top of the tank so that the hot water in the upper portion of the tank will preheat the cold water.
Another object of this invention is to provide in a hot water tank a plurality of hot water discharge pipes which extend downwardly into the tank for a substantial distance so that the hot water is taken from an intermediate point where the hot water is of more even hot temperature than at the top of the tank.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved water tank whereby increased hot Water Will be produced from a given amount of heat.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawing and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a plan view of a hot water tank constructed according to an embodiment of this invention,
Figure 2 is a vertical section partly broken away, taken on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral designates generally a metal tank which is formed of a cylindrical side wall 11, a top wall 12, and a bottom wall 13. The tank 10 is substantially encompassed in a heat insulating means embodying an outer jacket 14 and heat insulating means 15.
A plurality of vertically disposed cold water inlet pipes 16 depend from the top wall 12, extending downwardly through sealing glands 17. The pipes 16 terminate at the lower ends closely adjacent the bottom wall 13, and the upper ends of the pipes 16 which project above the top wall 12 are connected with a plurality of radially arranged horizontal pipes 18 by means of couplings 19.
The radial pipes 18 are connected with a centrally disposed cold water manifold 20 and a cold water inlet pipe 21 is connected with the manifold 20. Pipe 21 has a valve 22 interposed therein for cutting off the cold water when repairs to the tank or system are necessary.
A plurality of circumferentially arranged hot water outlet pipes 23 depend from the top wall 12 and extend downwardly through sealing glands 24 which are carried by the top wall 12. The lower ends of the hot water outlet pipes 23 terminate at a point substantially above the lower ends of the cold water pipes 16 so that the hot water entering the outlet pipes 23 will be of a relatively even hot temperature.
The upper ends of the hot water pipes 23 which project above the top wall 12 are connected with a centrally disposed hot water manifold 25 by means of radially connecting pipes 26. Manifold 25 is formed integral with manifold 20 with a dividing wall 20a between the two manifolds. A pipe 27 is connected with the hot water manifold 25 and a valve 28 is interposed in the hot water outlet pipe 27. By providing the cold water pipes 16, which in the present instance are six in number, and extending these cold water pipes to a point closely adjacent the bottom wall 13, the cold water passing downwardly through the pipes 16 will be preheated by passing through the hot Water which is disposed within the tank 10 above the bottom. It will be understood that the water in the tank 10 may be heated by any suitable means which may be independent of the tank 10 or which may be disposed at the bottom of the tank.
I do not mean to confine myself to the exact details of construction herein disclosed, but claim all variations falling within the purview of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A hot water tank comprising a tank formed of a cylindrical side wall, a bottom wall and a top wall, a plurality of circumferentially arranged cold water inlet pipes depending from said top wall and terminating at their inner lower ends adjacent said bottom wall, a centrally positioned cold water manifold radial connections between said manifold and the upper outer ends of said cold water pipes above said top wall, a plurality of circumferentially arranged hot water outlet pipes depending from said top wall and terminating at their inner lower ends a substantial distance inwardly of and above the lower ends of said cold water pipes, a centrally positioned hot water manifold, radial connections between said hot water manifold and the upper outer ends of said hot water pipes, an inlet to said cold water manifold and an outlet from said hot water manifold.
