To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHErsrIAN SVENDSEN, ot Clinton, in the county of Clinton and State ot' Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roofsfor Buildings; and-Ido hereby declare that the ibllowingisafull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will ellable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings,

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.

This invention relates to roofing for buildings; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction ofthe same, which will be hereinafter fully described, alld particularly poillted out in the claim.

My ilnproved rooiin g is constructed of thin wooden strips, which may be thirty-six inches long,and ofany desired width. Of tllese strips three distinct and separate layers (denoted respectively by A, B, and C) are employed, and the method ot' laying the courses is as follows Comnlencing at one corner ot' the root', as at I), three ot' the strips, A B C, are placed, B overlapping A', and C overlapping B and A', alld all being' secured by a single nail, E, near the upper left-hand corller of C', the strips B and C being cut down to respectively Ewothirds and one-third ot their usual lengths.

Another strip, D', is now inserted under the projecting ends of A B and secured bya nail driven through B. The next strip, E', is inserted under D and A' and secured bya nail January 16, 1883.

In laying the second course the same procedure is followed. the upper edges ot' each strip being adjusted ullder the lower edge ot' thecorrespondingstrip in the rst course, and so on until the roof is finished. In this manner it will be seen that the roof consists of three distinct and separate layers, each of which forms an individualroot'- covering, thus making the whole exceedingly water-proof and durable, while the cost of laying it and the material consumed is less than that ot' ordinary shingle roofs, its capacity for shedding water is increased, and it is not so readily dislodged by Wind or from other causes...

My improved root', when finished, is to be provided with a coating of milleral or other non-combustible and water-proof paillt, which mayin turn be sprinkled with gravel, powdered glass, or similar material.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The root' herein described, consisting ot' 65 courses of long wooden strips, arranged to overlap each other laterally,I as shown, the said courses being arranged to overlap the corresponding course below in such manner as to break joints, the whole having'a non-combustible and water-proof coating, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
