United States Patent WATCHMAKERS TRAY Arthur J. Barrett, Sioux City, Iowa Application October 3, 1952, Serial No. 313,032
1 Claim. (Cl. 211-88) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in watchmakers trays, and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character comprising novel means whereby a new, clean working surface may be readily had when desired.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a watchmakers work tray of the aforementioned character comprising means for holding a large number of the usual tools or instruments in position for convenient use.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a tray of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, compact, light in weight, attractive in appearance and which may be man'- ufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view of a watchmakers Work tray constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view in vertical longitudinal section through the device.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in cross-section, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a substantially rectangular base or plate 5 of suitable dimensions and materials. The plate 5 is adapted to rest on a horizontal support such, for instance, as a table top or bench 6.
Extending transversely across the rear marginal portion of the plate 5 is an elongated housing 7 of suitable material. The housing 7 is substantially U-shaped in crosssection and accommodates a roll of paper 8. The housing 7 includes a front wall 9, a relatively thick rear wall 10 and a top 11, the plate 5 constituting the bottom of said housing. The roll housing 7 further includes end walls 12 which are secured to the side edges of the plate 5 by screws 13 for removably securing said housing in position on said plate.
The rear portion of the top 11 of the housing 7 has formed therein a series of sockets or wells 14 for the reception of small tools, as at 15. Forwardly of the wells 14, the top 11 of the housing 7 is further provided with a depression 16 for the reception of other tools or instruments.
The lower edge of the front wall 9 of the housing 7 is Patented May 10, 1955 spaced from the plate 5 to define, in conjunction with said plate, a slot or opening 17 for the passage of the paper from the roll 8. Mounted on the side edges of the plate 5, forwardly of the end walls 12 of the housing 7, are upstanding guide strips or bars 18 comprising, on their upper portions, inwardly extending flanges 19 which overlie the marginal side portions of the plate 5 in spaced relation thereto (see Figure 3) and beneath which the longitudinal marginal portions of the paper 8 are slidable. Extending between the forward end portions of the guide strips or bars 18 and spaced above the plate 5 for the passage of the paper 8 therebeneath is a tear-off bar 20. The bar 20, in conjunction with the plate 5, defines a slot 21 for the passage of the paper 8.
It is thought that the manner in which the device is used will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the paper is drawn from the roll in the housing 7 in a manner to completely cover the plate 5 within the confines of the members 9, 20 and 19. The paper slides freely beneath the members 19 and 20, the construction and arrangement being such that said paper lies flat on the plate 5 and provides a working surface on which the watchmaker places the various parts. The housing 7 provides a rack for the various tools or instruments which is conveniently close to the working area of the tray. When a clean working surface is desired, the paper 8 is simply drawn outwardly through the slot 21 and the soiled end portion thereof torn off on the bar 20 and disposed of. The paper in the housing 7 may be expeditiously replenished by simply removing the screws 13 and lifting said housing off the plate 5.
It is believed that the many advantages of the watchmakers tray constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A watchmakers tray comprising; a horizontal plate for mounting on a support, an elongated housing, for the reception of a roll of paper, mounted transversely on top of the rear end portion of said plate, guides mounted on the side edges of the plate and including inwardly projecting flanges overlying the plate and spaced therefrom for defining, in conjunction therewith, channels for the passage of the paper from the housing, and a tear-0E bar mounted on the forward end portions of the guides and overlying the forward end portion of the plate in spaced relation thereto for the passage of the paper therebeneath, said housing being open at its bottom and comprising a front wall having its lower edge spaced above the plate and defining, in conjunction therewith, a discharge slot for the paper communicating with the channels.
