UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ENOS CURTISS, OF FINDLAY, OHIO.
JOURNALLBOX ATTAcl-i M ENT.
SPIJGIIIE`ICA'IION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,757, dated January 16, 1883.
' Application ined oaoberalsss. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ENos CURTISS, of Findlay, in the county ot` Hancock and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Attachment which is to be Applied to Heated Journal-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had tothe accompanyingdrawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an attachment which is to be applied to heated journal-boxes; and it consists in the combination of a box or can which holds a suitable cooling and lubricating mixture with suitable clampiugdevices, whereby the box or can can be attached directly to a heated journal-box and the contents of the can or box be allowed to ruu into the journalbox for the purpose ot' cooliugitoft'.
The object of my invention is to provide not only a suitable cooling and lubricating compound for heated journals, but a suitable attachment for carrying the compound, and which attachment is adapted to be quickly and easily attached to almost any lubricating bearing which is used upon railroad-cars.
Figure l is a vertical cross-section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sideelevation ot' thesame. A represents a suitable can or box of any desired shape, size, o1' construction that mayl be preferred, and in which a cooling andlubrieating compound is carried. Passed around this box, preferably near its lower edge, is a band or strip, C, to which the pronged bearing-plate D is secured by means ot' suitable bolts. This bearing-plate is not in contact with the band, but is separated therefrom by the thickness of the slotted slide F, which is placed between them. This bearing-plate has a screw-threaded opening through its top at G for the set-screw 4H to pass through, and has upon each of its lower ends the upwardlycurved prong I. This plate, being secured rigidly to the strap or band O, has no movement in any direction, but serves as the bearin g upon which the slotted plate is made to move by the set-screw. This slotted slide F has the set-screw H swveled in its upper end, and has a slot in each of its downward extensions for the' bolts which secure the bearing-plate to the Upon the lower one of each ot' the ends. ot
this slotted slide are formed the two prongs O, which preferabl)y project at the angle shown from each other. These lower prongs are made to catch over the edge of the lubri-y eating box or journal, while the prongs I are iliade to catch inside ot' it. By turning the set-screw I the prongs can he forced away from each other, so as to secure the box rigidly in place. By 'movingthe prongs close together the two prongs I can he readilyinserted inside of' any of thejournalboxes now in use' when the door orcovering is thrown open. In some cases the prongs will be made to catch over the side edges otl the box, instead ot: as here shown, on account otl the shape that is given to the openings in some of the boxes. The only difference made is that the parts move laterally7 instead ot' vertically.
Having thus described my invention, I claiml. The combination of a box or can, aprong
