.To all rc7/tom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE F. BLAKE, of Belmont, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Duplex Pumping-Engines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relating to steam-pumps is embodied in a duplex pumping-engine, comprising two similar engines and pump-cylinders, so coupled together that each engine actuates the steam-valve of the other engine.
-The invention has for its object to simplify the construction ofthe valve-actuating mechanism, which consists of a slotted or forkedvalve-actuatin g lever belonging` to each engine,. it being actuated by the piston-rod thereof. rEhe said valve-actuating levers for the two engines are each fixed upon one end ot'a rock-shaft, having` upon its other end a crank connected by a link with a tappet, which has a sliding movement upon the valve-rod ofthe other engine, and alternately engages each of two valve-rod collars on the said valverod at either side of it, thus causing the valverod to accompany it in the last part of its movement caused by the oscillation of the act-v uating-lever near the end of the stroke of the piston. The two rock-shafts have their bearings in pedestals sustained upon the framework connecting the engine and pump cylinders, and have their axes in the same plane with the axes of the valve-rods. The crank upon one rock-shaft extends upward therefrom, and the link connecting it with the tappet is above the level of .the corresponding valve-rod, while the crank upon the other rock-shaft extends downward, and the link is uating-levers,rock-shafts, cranks,tappets, and valve-rods ot' the two engines are duplicates of one another, thus greatly simplifying the construction, while in all other duplex engines, so far as I am aware, the valve-actuating levers are ot' di'erentlength and different order, and the different parts ot' the valve-gear of the two engines not exact duplicates.

The two engine-cylinders A B may he of any usual construction, steam being admitted to them through the branched inlet-pipe a and exhausted through the branched eductionv or exhaust pipe b, and the flow of the steam to and from the ends ot' the cylinders through the parts c d being cont-rolled by the valves e, which may be of any suitable construction. The steam-cylinders are connected with the pump-cylinders, which are not shown, by suitable t'rame-work, shown in this instance as consisting of the rodsfff2. The piston-rodsg g' are connected with cross-heads h h', provided with pins t' i', which enter the slots or forks 2 of the valve-actuating levers lo k', the said pins c' t being provided with friction rolls or sleeves i2. The levers k 7c are connected with rock-shafts m m', having their bearings in pedestals n n', that are sustained upon the frame-rods ff. The rock-shafts m m each have bearings in both the pedestals, and they carry cranks o o, respectively, the former extending from the rock-shaft on the same side as the lever 7s and the latter on the opposite side to the lever lo. The crank-pins o2 of the said cranks are connected by links p p2 with the tappets r r', which slide freely on the valverods t t', and alternately engage collars t2, adjustably connected with the said rods, as described in another application for Letters Patent tiled herewith. The axes ofthe rock-shafts m m are in the same plane with the axes of the valve-rods, so that byA making the levers 7c 7c of the same length an'd the cranks o o ot' the same length the valve-rod and valve of each engine will have the same vamount of movement.
The pins i and i are placed, one at the forward and the other at the rear end of the respective cross-heads, and the distance between the said pins when the cross-heads are in line with one another is equal to the distance between the rock-shafts m m', so that the movement ot' cach valve relative to the travel of ICO the piston of the other engine is the salne,pro vided that the collars t2 have the saine adj ustment on the valve-rods. It will be seen that the positioll of' the pins i i on the cross-heads is the same, and that all the parts ot' the valveactuatillg mechanism ot' the two engines that are designated by the same letter of reference with and witllout the accent-mark are the exact duplicates ot' one another, alld lnay be made interchangeable, tllus greatly simplifying their construction. By having the rockshafts on a level or ill the same plane with the valve-rods the power is lllore directly trallslnitted than when a dil ferent arrangement is employed.

2. In a duplex engine, the combination of the cross-heads` valve-actuating levers, alld rock-shafts, with their supporting'pedestals, cranks, tappets, and valve-rods, the axes of the said valve-rods and rock-shafts being ill the same plane, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a duplex pumping-engine, the combillatioll ot1 the connecting frame-work betweell the stea-nl alld plllnp cylinders and the pedestals supported thereon, with the valve-actuating levers and cranks, alld the rock-shafts connected therewith, having their bearings ill the said pedestals and the valve-rods and guides therefor sustained by the said pedestals, substantially as described.
