(Cl. 155-45) Convertible couch and chair beds are well-known articles of furniture, but their design and construction are usually such that they cannot be manufactured and sold at a low price and although there have been attempts to produce such articles at a low price, in all such cases the design and appearance was such as to detract from sales a eal.

pThe principal object of the present invention s-to provide a chair or couch bed which is of simple deslgn and of attractive appearance, which is of strong and durable construction having but few parts, which can easlly be converted to and from a full length bed, and which can be manufactured and sold at a low cost.

Further objects will be apparent from a consideration of the following description and accompanying drawlngs, wherein:

Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a convertible chair bed constructed in accordance with the present invention;

Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the chair bed of Fig. 1 converted into a full length bed;

Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1 with certain of the cushions removed; and

Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail showing the construction between the seat and back sections.

The embodiment herein shown for the purpose of illustration comprises a seat section 1 having a closed front wall 2, side walls 3 and 4 and an open rear, the section having the usual cross straps r the like members supporting a fixed cushion 5. If desired, the lower ends of the side walls may be provided with casters 6 to permit easy transportation of the chair bed from place to place and it is to be understood that the cushion and side and end walls of the seat section may be appropriately embellished to enhance its appearance. Angle irons 8 and 9 are secured to the rear corner portions of the seat sections to provide upright lianges, each of which carries an upper pivot stud 10 and a lower locking stud 11 (Fig. 4).

A back section 12 comprises an inverted U-shaped frame having arms 14 and 15 and a closed end 16, slats or the like cross straps 18 being provided to support a removable cushion 20. The lower ends of the arms 14 and are provided with integral extensions 21 and 22 juxtaposed to the inner faces of the flanges 8 and 9 when the back section is in upright position.

Each extension is formed with an elongate slot 24 spaced from its lower end, herein shown as being T- shaped in order to facilitate assembly, and an open slot or U-shaped recess 25 at its lower end. The elongated slots 24 receive the pivot studs 10 and the open slots 25 receive the locking studs 11, as shown more clearly in Fig. 4, and these studs and slots cooperate to hold the back section in upright position.

The entire back section 12 is bodily movable upwardly when in upright position so as to free or disengage the locking studs 11 from the slots 25 and permit the section to be swung downwardly to horizontal position, the studs 10 in the slots 24 providing pivots, and at the same time the extensions 21 and 22 swing upwardly through the open rear of the seat section, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Spaced legs 28 are pivotally connected to the end frame member 16 by studs 30 so that they may be swung outwardly from nested position contiguous to the frame member 16 to extended position (Fig. 2) wherein they 2,702,583 Patented Feb. 22, 1955 rice support the back section and associated parts when in horizontal position. h

An extensible section 32 (Figs. l and 2), carrled by the back-section 12, comprises a pair of side frame members 34 and 35 pivotally connected by studs 36 and 37 to the anns 14 and 15, respectively, at a point spaced inwardly from the end member 16 so that they may be swung from collapsed position contiguous to the outer face of the arms 14 and 15 through an angle of 180 to extended position. Laterally projecting lugs 40 and 41, carried by the arms 14 and 15, provide abutments or stops engageable by the frame members 34 and 35 to hold them in alignment with the arms 14 and 15 when in extended position.

The extensible member 32 (Figs. 2 and 3) is provided with cross straps 42 for supporting a removable cushion 44, the underside of which is provided with a fabric band 45 (Fig. 2) defining a pocket which receives the projecting extensible member when in extended position, thus holding the cushion 44 in position.

When the article of furniture is to be used as a chair the parts are as shown in Fig. l and the cushion 44 may be placed to one side or used as a foot rest, if desired. In order to convert the chair to a full length bed, the cushion 20 is first removed and the legs 28 are swung outwardly to extended position, after which the back rest 12 is lifted upwardly to disengage the studs 11 from slots 25, whereupon the back section may be swung to horizontal position. The extensible section 32 is then swung counter-clockwise (Fig. l) against the lugs 40 and 41, the cushion 20 is then replaced, and the cushion 44 applied so that the section 32 projects into the pocket defined by the band 45, thus providing a full length single bed.

Although the invention is herein illustrated as a chair convertible into a bed, it is to be understood that the same construction is applicable to a couch or the like and that various changes and modiications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.

I claim:

In an article of furniture of the convertible type embodying a seat section open at the rear end and a back section having a removable cushion resting on the seat section, means for interconnecting the two sections so that the back section may be releasably locked in upright posltion or swung to horizontal position, said means comprising upright flanges secured to the rear corner portions of said seat section, each iiange having an upper pivot stud and a lower locking stud, and depending extensions carried by said back section and juxtaposed to said flanges when said back section is in upright position, the lower ends of said extensions being formed with open slots and 'Fh-shaped slots spaced upwardly from said open slots a d1stance corresponding to the spacing between the pivot studs and locking studs, each T-shaped slot extending horlzontally with the end of its free leg opening rearwardly at the vertical edge of the ange when said back section 1s 1n upright position, said T-shaped slots receiving the pivot studs and said open slots receiving the locking studs so as to cooperate in supporting said back section in upright position, said back section being bodily movable upwardly to disengage said locking studs from said open slots and permit said back section to swing downwardly about said pivot studs to horizontal position and the lower ends of said extensions to swing upwardly beneath said seat section.
