(Cl. 110-21) This invention relates to devices for burning stumps, logs, and the like, and in particular a device whereby burning of stumps, logs, and the like is accomplished with air supplied at a high temperature and also at high pressures.
The purpose of this invention is to facilitate burning stumps, logs and the like by supplying oxygen for com bustion with a stream of air supplied under pressure and heated to a comparatively high temperature.
In burning stumps, logs and the like particuluarly where the wood is green and wet it is diicult to supply sufficient air to dry out the moisture and at the same time supply sufiicient oxygen.
With the conventional method of burning stumps 1t is diicult to hold oil or other fuel in the burning area in sui'lcient quantities to burn a stump without making continuous applications of the fuel. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates an improved method of burning stumps and the like wherein air is heated to combustion temperature and ejected against a stump under pressure thereby driving out the moisture content and supplying an overwhelming amount of oxygen for combustion.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide a portable device for supplying air under pressure at high temperatures whereby the air may be discharged against a stump to facilitate burning the stump.
A further object of the invention is to provide an apparatus for burning stumps and the like with air supplied under pressure at high temperatures which is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a furnace having a starting coil removably mounted in the lower part thereof and a plurality of air coils positioned in the upper part whereby heat from combustion of products in the furnace raises the temperature of air passing through the coils and the air from the coils is carried by insulated nozzles to a stump or the like.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view showing a vertical section through the furnace of this invention with outlet connections from air heating coils in the upper part of the furnace extended to positions adjacent a stump.
Figure 2 is a sectional plan through the upper part of the furnace being taken on line 2--2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is also a sectional plan taken through the lower part of the furnace being taken on line 3--3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a detail illustrating the structure of one of the insulated nozzles.
Figure 5 is an end view of the nozzle shown in Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a detail illustrating an auxiliary coil adapted to be connected to one of the nozzles and also adapted to be positioned in an opening burned in a stump to further facilitate burning of the stump.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved stump burning apparatus of this invention includes a furnace 10 having starting coils 11 in the lower part, air coils 12, 13, 14 and 15 in the upper part, nozzles 16 connected to the lower ends of the air coils with extension tubes 17 and with universal joints 18 and 19 at the ends of the tubes 17 and an auxiliary coil 20 adapted to be positioned in an opening in a stump and connected to one of the extension tubes 17.

The base of the furnace is provided with supporting legs 29 for spacing the lower end of the furnace from the ground or a surface upon which the furnace may be positioned and the upper part of the furnace is provided with a cover 30 having a ilue connection 31 therein and also having a section 32 connected to the cover 30 with hinges 33. The section 32 is provided with a handle 34.
The air heating coils 12, 13, 14 and 15 are provided with supply connections 35 having valves 36 therein and these connections may be extended to a pressure tank or air compressors whereby air is supplied under pressure to the coils.
Discharge connections 37 extend from the lower ends of the coils and the extension tubes 17 are connected to the connections 37 by the universal joints 18.
The nozzles 16 are connected to the extended ends of the extension tubes by the universal joints 19 and tubes of insulating material as indicated by the numeral 38 are provided around the nozzles and also around the connecting tubes and fittings between the nozzles and coils.
The nozzles 16 are provided with heads 39 and caps 40 with perforations 41 therein are secured to the heads by threads or other suitable means.
The auxiliary coil 20 is also provided with a head 42 having a cap 43, similar to the cap 40 thereon and the coil is connected by a tube 44 to a universal joint 19 of one of the tubes 17 or to suitable means for supplying air under pressure. The nozzle 42 at the opposite end is connected to the coil by a tube 45 which is comparatively short, and after an opening has been burned in a stump, log, or the like the coil 20 is inserted in the opening whereby air is supplied directly to the interior of the stump and the air passing through the coil 20 is heated to a comparatively high degree.
With the parts formed in this manner air under pres sure passes through the combustion chamber of the furnace and with the air discharged from the lower ends of the coils in the upper part of the furnace the temperature thereof is comparatively high, the lower turns of the coils being adjacent the furning fuel.
Although it is preferred to use air at a pressure between and 175 pounds and at a temperature of approximately 1400 degrees F. it will be understood that the pressure and temperature may be varied as desired.
Air supplied under pressure at this temperature causes green or wet wood to burn rapidly, the moisture being driven away and suicient oxygen being supplied to expedite burning.
It will be understood that the device may be provided in various sizes and may be used for burning stumps, logs and other products and the heated air being discharged at high pressures may also be used for removing paint and for other purposes.
It will be understood that modifications may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. In stump burning apparatus, the combination which comprises a portable furnace, a plurality of air pressure coils in the upper, part of the furnace, connections with valves therein for connecting each of said air pressure coils to a source of supply for supplying air under pressure, discharge connections having universal joints on the outer ends thereof extended from said air pressure coils to the outside of said furnace, extensions having universal joints on one end thereof connected at the opposite end to the universal joints on the connections, an auxiliary coil of a size and shape to be inserted into a hole in a tree stump and having a nozzle on one end connected at its opposite end to the universal joint on one of said extensions, and spray nozzles connected to the universal joints on the remainder of the extensions.

A stump burner comprising a portable furnace, a plurality of air coils positioned in the upper part of the furnace, discharge connections extended from the lower ends of said coils to the outside of said furnace, universal joints on the outer ends of said connections, extension tubes havi g universal joints on one end connected at the other end to the universal joints on said connections, an auxiliary oil having a nozzle on one end connected at its opposite end to the universal joint on one of said extensions outside of said furnace whereby said coil may be extended into an opening in the stump of a tree, and a nozzle connected to each of the remaining extensions by the universal joint on said extensions.
