(Cl. -52) This invention relates to an article of furniture having a foldable sectional frame which in folded position forms a chair or seat and in extended condition provides a bed and the invention has particular reference to an article of furniture of said character in wlu'ch the furniture frame has expandable sides or arm rests.

in articles of furniture of this character the foldable sectional frame is arranged in folded position within the furniture frame to form the seat and sufiicient clearance must be allowed on each side of the sectional frame to permit of the folding thereof within the confines of the furniture frame. Furthermore, the sectional frame must be of sufficient width to support a mattress and the furniture framemust necessarily be relatively wide in order to receive the folded sectional frame together with the mattress in folded condition therein. This has resulted in a furniture frame of excessive width in relation to the Width of the foldable frame.

in order to overcome the objection to the excessive width of the furniture frame, the invention provides means for expanding the opposite sides or arm rests of the furniture frame when the foldable frame is moved from folded to extended or bed forming relation so as to eliminate the excessive amount of clearance hereinbefore required therebetween.

Another object of the invention is to provide interengageable means carried by the furniture and sectional frames for moving the sides of the furniture frame inwardly with the movement of the sectional frame into folded position therein.

Still another object of the invention resides in the provision of means for automatically expanding the opposite sides or arm supports of the furniture frame incident to the unfolding of the foldable frame.

The invention also provides improved means foldably connecting the sectional frames together and with the furniture frame for movement thereof to and from folded or collapsed relation.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated.

Referring to the drawings, the article of furniture includes a furniture frame 10 and a foldable metal frame 11 consisting of a plurality of sections hingedly connected view taken approximately together in end to end relation and swingably connected with the furniture frame for movement from an aligned relation for supporting a mattress in bed forming relation to a folded or collapsed relation within the furniture frame to form a seat.

The furniture frame it) is provided with opposite sides or arm rests 12 which are disposed close to the foldable frame 11 and in longitudinal alignment therewith when the foldable frame is in folded condition within the furniture frame and which are automatically expanded into outwardly diverging relation with the unfolding of the foldable frame.

The foldable frame consists of an inner section 13, an intermediate section 14, a connecting section 15 and an outer end section 16. The inner section 13 includes spaced angle iron side rails 1'7 which are connected together at their inner ends by a cross bar 18 and at their outer ends the said side rails are pivotally connected to spaced angle iron side rails 19 of the intermediate section 14 on pivot pins 19' extending through the vertical flanges thereof. At their outer ends the side rails 19 of the intermediate section are pivotally connected to spaced angle iron side rails 20 of the connecting section 15 on pivot pins 21. The outer ends of the side rails 20 of the connecting section 15 are pivoted to spaced angle iron side rails 22 of the outer end section 16 on pivot pins 23 which extend through the vertical flanges thereof. The side rails 22 of the outer end section 16 are connected together by an end rail 24. A wire mesh spring S of any desired construction is connected with a stretch between the inwardly directed horizontal flanges of the spaced side rails of the sections and between the cross bars 18 and 24 for supporting a mattress M thereon as shown inFig. 2 of the drawings. The mattress M is adapted to fold with the folding of the sections into doubled-over relation within the furniture frame with the folding of the sectional frame.

The foldable frame is provided with two pairs of legs 25 and 26 which are pivotally connected with the intermediate section 14 and the outer end section 16 respectively and are foldable with the foldable frame 11 into collapsed relation therewith within the furniture frame. The legs 25 are pivotally connected on pivot pins 27 to lugs 28 aflixed to and depending from the side rails 19 of the intermediate section 14, while the legs 26 are pivotally connected on pivot pins 29 to the vertical flanges of the side rails 22 of the outer end section 16. The legs 26 are pivoted on pivot pins 30 to side plates 31 and the said side plates are pivoted on pivot pins 31' to a link 32 pivoted on pivot pins 33 at their forward ends to the vertical flanges of the side rails of the connecting section 15. The legs are pivotally connected on pivot pins 36 to links 37 which are bent upwardly at their inner ends and are pivotally connected on pivot pins 38 to links 39. The links 39 are pivotally connected on pivot pins 39 to the vertical flanges of the side rails 19. At their inner ends the links 39. are pivotally connected on pivot pins 40 to links 41 which are pivoted on pivot pins 42 to the vertical flanges of the side rails 17 of the. inner section 13. The links 41 are pivotally connected to the links 43 on pivot pins 44, the links 43 being pivotally connected to links 45 on pivot pins 46' The links 45 are pivotally connected on pivot pins 47 to the inner ends of the vertical flanges of the side rails 17 of the inner section 13 and at their upper ends the links 45 are pivotally connected on pivot pins 48 to the inside faces of bars 49 bolted or otherwise affixed to opposite side portions of the furniture frame 19. By this arrangement of links the legs 25 and 26 are swung into substantial parallel relation with'the sections 14 and 16 respectively with the folding of the collapsible frame into folded position within the furniture frame in which the inner section 13 and the intermediate section 15 are "arranged in substantial upright relation while the sections 14 and 16 are arranged in substantial horizontal relation.

In order to swing the sectional frame into lower position within the furniture frame with the folding thereof, the links 37 are pivotally connected on pivot pins 50 to bent links 51 which bent links are pivoted on the pivot pins 52 with the vertical flanges of the side rails 19 of the intermediate section 14. The forward ends of the bent links 51 are pivotally connected to links 53 on pivot pins 54, the forward ends of the links 53 being pivotally connected on pivot pins 55 to fiat bars 56 bolted or otherwise affixed to the inside faces of the fixed side portions 66 of the furniture frame 10. The links 53 are formed with upwardly extending extensions 57 to which one or more springs 53 are fastened with the opposite ends of the springs secured as at 59 to the flat bars 56. Links 60 pivoted on pivot pins 61 to the vertical flanges of the side rails 20 of the connecting section 15 and connected to the vertical flanges of the side rails 19 of the intermediate section 14 by pin and slot connection 78 limit the swinging movement of the connecting section from aligned relation with the intermediate section to right angular relation therewith.

The furniture frame 10 includes a bottom frame 62 of rectangular formation extending about all four sides thereof and supported by the legs 63 at the corners. Affixed to the frame 62 is a back frame 64 and projecting forwardly of the back frame is a back rest frame 65 at each side which are connected by cross members for supporting upholstery. The sides or arm rests 12 are swingably supported on the side members 66 of the bottom frame 62 by pins 68 pivotally mounted in sockets 69 formed in the said side members. The sides or arm rests are of rectangular formation, one being located on each side of the furniture frame and extending from front to rear thereof and between the side member 6 6 and the under side of the back rest frame 65. r

In order to effect inward and outward swinging of the sides or arm rests with the outward and inward movement respectively of the sectional frame 11, flat plates 70 pivoted on pivot pins 71 to the inside face of the front panel 72 of the bottom frame 62 are swingably connected with the sides or arm rests 12 by arms 74 respectively. The said arms are pivoted on pivot pins 75 to the plates 70 and are pivoted on pivot pins 76 to brackets 77 atfixed to the sides or arm rests respectively. The plates 70 are tensioned by contractile springs 80 to swing outwardly. from the position shown in-Fig. 12 to the position shown in Fig. 6 and to swing the sides or arm rests outwardly from the position shown in Fig. 12 to the position shown in Fig. 6. The plates are retained in the inward position shown in Fig. 12 by means of a yoke member 81 of inverted U shaped formation having converging earns 82 which straddle lugs 83 projecting from the plates 70 respectively. The yoke member 81 is rigidly affixed to a bracket 84 secured to the under side of the connecting section 15 and to which bracket is also afiixed a front panel 85. Coincident with the downward swinging of the foldable frame 11 into folded position within the furniture frame, the cams 82 of the yoke member 81 engage the lugs 83 and cam the plates 79 inwardly against the tension of'the springs '80.

It will be understood 'thatthe foldable frame is moved into collapsed relation within the furniture frame by swinging the outer end section 16 upwardly on the pivot pins23 into substantially right angular relation with the connecting'section '15 and then'swinging the sections 15 and 16 on the pivot pins 21 to dispose the outer section 16 in substantially horizontal relation with the section 14 as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The foldable frame is then raised as shown in Fig. 4 and swung downwardly and inwardly on the pivot pins 20, 47 and 48 to dispose the foldable'frame in lowered relation within the furniture frame and with the sections 13 and 15 in substantially parallel upright relation. The downward swinging movement of the foldable frame into the furniture frame tensions the springs 58 which facilitates the upward movement of the furniture frame from folded position when the frame is to be moved to the bed forming position. The movement of the sides or arm rests 12 into divergent relation as shown in Figs. 1 and 6 of the drawings provides clearance on the opposite sides of the foldable frame to permit of the folding of the mattress therewith without contact with the sides or arm rests.

While the preferred form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it is to be understood that the same is'not so limited but shall cover and include any and all modifications of the invention which fall within the purview of the claims.

What is claimed is:

1. In an article of furniture of the character described, a furniture frame, a foldable frame composed of a plurality of sections pivotally connected together in end to end relation and swingably connected with the furniture frame for movement of the foldable frame from aligned relation to a folded relation within the furniture frame, said furniture frame including side frames pivotally connected therewith on upright axes for swinging of the side frames from substantially parallel relation to divergent relation, tensioned means carried by said furniture frame engaging said side frames for moving the side frames to divergent relation, and cam means carried by said foldable frame engaging said first mentioned means for moving the same together with the side frames inwardly with the swinging movement of the foldable frame into collapsed relation with the furniture frame.

2. In an article of furniture of the character described, a furniture frame, a foldable frame composed of a plurality of sections pivotally connected together in end to end relation and swingably connected with the furniture frame for movement of the foldable frame from aligned relation'to a folded relation within the furniture frame, said furniture frame including side frames pivotally connected therewith on upright axes for swinging of the side frames from substantially parallel relation to divergent relation, means carried by said furniture frame for swinging said side frames into divergent relation, said means including members pivotally to said furniture frame and links pivoted to said members and to said side frames respectively and coiled springsrtensioning said members to swing outwardly, and cam means carried by said foldable frame andengaging said members for camming the same inwardly to move said side frames inwardly into substantially parallel relation with the swinging movement of said foldable frame into folded relation within the furniture frame.

3. In an article of furniture of the character described, a furniture frame, a foldable frame composed of a plurality of sections pivotally connected together in end to end relation and swingably connected with the furniture frame for movement of the foldable frame from aligned relation to a folded relation within the furniture frame, said furniture frame including bottom side members and side frames supported on said bottom members and pivotally connected therewith on upright axes for swinging of the side frames from substantially parallel relation to divergent relation, means for swinging said side frames into divergent relation, said means including two members pivoted to said furniture frame in side by side relation and having outwardly projecting lugs and links pivoted to said members and to said side frames respectively and coiled springs tensioning said members to swing outwardly, and a yoke carried by said foldable frame having oppositely disposed cam portions and adapted to straddle said lugs for camming said members inwardly to thereby move said side frames inwardly into substantially parallel relation with the swinging movement of the foldable frame into folded relation within the furniture frame.

4. In an article of furniture of the character described, a furniture frame, a foldable frame composed of a plurality of sections pivotally connected together in end to end relation and swingably connected with the furniture frame for movement of the foldable frame from aligned relation to a folded relation within the furniture frame, said furniture frame including bottom side members and side frames supported on said bottom members and pivotally connected therewith on upright axes for swinging of the side frames from substantially parallel relation to divergent relation, spring bias means carried by said furniture frame and engaging said side frame for expanding said side frame into said divergent relation, means carried by said foldable frame engaging said first mentioned means for retaining said side frame in inward relation, and said spring bias means automatically moving said side frames into divergent relation when the first mentioned means is released therefrom by the movement of the foldable frame from the folded position within the furniture frame.

5. In an article of furniture of the character described, a furniture frame, a foldable frame composed of a plurality of sections pivotally connected together in end to end relation and swingably connected with the furniture frame for movement of the foldable frame from aligned relation to a folded relation within the furniture frame, said furniture frame including bottom side members and side frames forming arm supports supported on said bottom members for movement from inward relation to an outward spread apart relation, spring bias means carried by said furniture frame and engaging said side frame for expanding said side frame into said spread apart relation, means carried by said foldable frame engaging said first mentioned means for retaining said side frame in inward relation, and said spring bias means automatically moving said side frames into spread apart relation when the first mentioned means is released therefrom by the movement of the foldable frame from the folded position within the furniture frame.

6. In an article of furniture of the character described, a furniture frame, a foldable frame composed of a plurality of sections pivotally connected together in end to end relation and swingably connected with the furniture frame for movement of the foldable frame from aligned relation to a folded relation within the furniture frame, said furniture frame including side frames connected therewith for swinging of said side frames from substantially parallel relation to divergent relation, means connecting the outer ends of said side frames, with said furniture frame, and cam means carried by said foldable frame and engaging the aforesaid means for moving the side frame inwardly from said divergent relation with the swinging movement of said foldable frame into collapsed relation with the furniture frame.
