United States Patent ATTACHABLE OARLOCK-MOUNTIN G Mather Garland, Excelsior, Minn., assignor to Garland Ventilator Corporation, a corporation of Illinois Application November 9, 1953, serial No. 390,921
3 Claims. (Cl. 9-26) This invention relates to an attachable oarlock-mounting for boats which may he detachably secured at various points along the exposed gunwale of a small boat.
It is an object of my invention to provide a simple and eflicient oarlock-mounting for small boats which are not in their inherent construction provided with oarlock sockets and which will further enable the mountings to be adjusted and fixed at various positions along the exposed gunwale of a boat to provide for adjustability of the pivoted positions of the oars with reference to the location of the oarsmans seat.
Another object is the provision of an eicient oarlockmounting structure of the class described wherein selective sockets are provided in each mounting to enable the pivoted positions of the oars to be selectively varied relative to the longitudinal center line of the boat.
A still further object is the provision of an attachable oarlock-mounting which will have substantially universal application to conventional small boats having exposed gunwales which vary quite substantially in widths and cross sectional shapes.
These and other objects and advantages of my invention will more fully appear from the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a boat partially broken away, showing an embodiment of my oarlock-mounting mounted on the gunwale;
Fig. 2 is a plan view showing said embodiment mounted on a gunwale and particularly showing the positioning of the oarlock sockets; u
Fig. 3 is a front elevational view showing the clamping jaws engaging the gunwale of a boat;
Fig. 4 shows the plan view of another embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 5 shows a front elevational view of the embodiment of Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is a left side elevational View of the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
The embodiment of my invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3 consists of a metal clamping bracket 10 of general inverted U-sliape for straddling the gunwale of a boat. The end portions of bracket 10 are formed as by diecasting to provide oarlock socket members 11 and 12, the sockets being designated by the numerals 13 and 14. A depending portion of the socket-forming member 12 CII serves as a fixed clamping jaw 15 while the second socket-forming member 11 constitutes a depending support for a clamping screw 16 which threadedly engages a horizontal, tapped bore in member 11. The outer end of screw 16 is bent to form a turning handle 17 and the inner end of the screw is provided with means for rotatively mounting a movable clamping jaw 18 thereon.
The jaws 1S and 1S each has a pair of spaced, planar surfaces 15a and 18a respectively thereon, disposed m opposition and the intermediate portions of the jaws are provided with opposed, concave or semi-cylmdrtcal surfaces 15b and 18b. These clamping jaws using selectively their curved or planar surfaces, engagev the gunwales of various types of boats and securely clamp the oarlockmounting thereon.
The entire clamping bracket 10 may be integrally constructed from preferably non-corrosive metals such as bronze or aluminum or if desired, may of course be made up of several parts rigidly secured together.
Another embodiment of my invention is shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 and consists of two clamping brackets 20a and 2Gb disposed in side by side relation and each having arms 21 and 22 aflixed thereto at the ends thereof. A portion of the arm 21 forms a fixed clamping jaw member 23 at the lower portion thereof. A screw 24 is threadedly mounted through arm 22 and has a portion of its outer end forming a turning handle 25. On the inner end of screw 24 is rotatably secured a movable clamping jaw member 26 in opposed relationship to the jaw 23 and projectible toward jaw 23 as the screw 24 is turned. The arm 22 is doubled over to add strength to the arm and to provide a greater number of internal screw threads to engage the screw 24. The clamping jaws 23 and 26 have planar surfaces 23a and 26a respectively and opposed concavely-curved surfaces 23b and 26b respectively. The clamping jaws 23 and 26 engage the gunwale of a boat and clamp the bracket to the gunwale.
Clamping brackets 20a and 2Gb are connected together by means of straps or bars 27 and 2S which are fixedly fastened to the clamping brackets 20a and 20h as by rivets. Bars 27 and 28 have depending medial portions between the clamping brackets 20a and 20b shaped to form oarlock sockets 31 and 32.
The embodiments of my invention herein described and shown provide for the clamping of the brackets to the gunwale of the boat, no matter what the shape or the form of the gunwale may be. If the gunwale has flat, vertical sides as shown in Fig. 3, the planar surfaces 15a, 18a, 23a and 26a of the respective clamping jaws engage the planar surfaces of the gunwale and securely clamp the brackets to the gunwale. If, as in some modern motor boats, the gunwales are irregularly shaped, having such cross-sectional shapes as a circle, triangle or diamond, the concavely curved opposed surfaces 15b, 18b, 2317 and 26b of their respective jaw members engage the non-regularly shaped gunwale and efficiently clamp against it. By means of these clamping jaw members 15, 18, 23 and 26, the oarlock-mountings may be attached at any desired position of adjustment along the length of the gunwale of a boat to convenience the user of the oarlock-mountings.
The embodiments of my invention, as shown in the figures and herein described, provide a selectivity of oarlock sockets 13, 14, 31 and 32. The position of the `oarlocks on oars designed for one boat may not be suit able for convenient rowing when the oars are used in the sockets provided inherently in another boat, thus sometimes causing the hands of the rower to be bumped in rowing, or in other instances, position the hands of the oarsman too far apart. With my improved mounting, an out-rigged effect may be obtained upon the oarlocks for using the outer sockets 14 of my mounting ( sockets 31 and 32 in the second form of the invention described). On the other hand, if better rowing may be obtained by having the pivoted shanks of the oarlocks somewhat closer together then the inwardly disposed sockets 13 of the two brackets may be utilized.
It will be noted that in both forms of my invention, the oarlock sockets are disposed in close position to the sides of the gunwale of the boat.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a novel and highly efficient device for positioning the oarlocks on a boat with gunwales in a Patented June 1K8, 1357 location convenient to the user of the oars. The oarlock mounting is longitudinally adjustable along the gunwales of the boat and the lateral positioning of the oarlock is adjustable through the selectivity of oarlock sockets for receiving the shank of a'n oarlock.
It `will of course be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the parts without departing from the scope of my invention. Y
What I claim is:
l. An attachable oarlock mounting comprising an overhanging clamping bracket of general, inverted U- shape, having a pair of spaced depending arm portions having apertures extending vertically from the upper ends thereof to constitute a pair of selective oarlock sockets, disposed respectively inward and outward of thc gunwale of a boat, one of said depending arms having an inner clamp surface or jaw and the other of said arms being tapped horizontally to receive a clamping bolt, a clamping bolt threaded into said last mentioned arm and carry-l ing at its inner end a jaw member opposed to the clamp surface of said rst vmentioned arm.
2. An attachable oarlock mounting comprising a mounting bracket of inverted U-shape having a pair of spaced, depending arms, one arm at the inner side thereof providing a fixed clamping jaw and the same arm being vertically apertured from the top thereof to provide an oarlock socket, the second arm being opposed to the first arm and adjacent the lower end thereof having, a clamping bolt threaded therein and carrying at its inner end a jaw element opposing the jaw element of said iirst mentioned arm, and said second mentioned arm also being vertically apertured from the upper end thereof to constitute a second oarlock socket, the base or intermediate portion of said inverted U-shaped bracket being adapted to overhang and be supported upon the gunwale of a small boat and serving to maintain said arms in predetermined spaced relation, said recited elements constituting all essential parts of said mounting.
3. An attachable oarlock mounting comprising a mounting bracket of general inverted U-shape, said mounting including a pair of clamping structures disposed in side-by-side relation, each of said clamping structures having a top bar and a pair of spaced integral arms depending from said top bar, corresponding arms of said clamping structures constituting fixed jaws for engaging one sidc of the gunwale of a small boat, the other correspending arms of said clamping structures threadedly carrying clamping bolts having at their inner ends jaw elements opposing said first mentioned jaw elements, said mounting bracket having extended between said clamping structures and depending from the top thereof, a pair of widely spaced, vertical oarlock sockets, `one disposed outwardly of the gunwale of the boat and the other disposed inwardly of the gunwale of the boat.
