EUSSEL E. WHITZEL, OE OINOINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOE To P. WILSON a SONS,
.OE SAME PLACE.
HAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.1`279,511, dated June 12,1883,
Application filed March 26, 1883. (No model.) l
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUSSEL B. WHITZEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and Y State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Haines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of metallic hame-tops which are provided IO with loops or notches for retaining llame-straps or haine-strap loops.
It has for its object the provision of a metallic haine-top loop-strap having cast integral therewith an ornamental tip of any desired configuration, and fastening-strap loops which are united by narrow ribs or contracted webs,
which, with the loops, form notches for the reception of the notch of the adjustable straploop, the construction being of such a nature 2o that no coring is necessary in casting, and a light, economical, and symmetrical llame-top is obtained.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of a haine having my im- 2 5 proved Stop attached in place. Fig. 2 is aside or edge elevation of the Same. Fig. 3 is a de- ,tail elevation of the adjustable strap-loop.
A represents the wooden llame-stock. Bis
a metallic strap embracing the upper and outer 3o edge thereof, being formed so as to fit upon the end ofthe stock A, as shown in Fig. l.
C C C are loops Iliade in the metal forming strap B, through either of which loops the strap-for securing the upper parts of the hames upon the collar may be passed. Loops C are cast integral with strap B, and are rigidly connected together by means of the narrow ribs or contracted Webs c. Webs c materially strengthen the Strap-loops C, and provide a iirm bear- 4o ing for a detachable strap-loop, D, used insteadof the loops C or conjointly therewith. Loop D is contracted at d, so as to form a notch in 'the loop to closely iit in either ofthe notches formed between the loops C and rest upon the 4 5 Webs c, thereby avoiding any lateral play of the loop D when in place upon the hame. A
E represents an ornamental tip or head, cast integral with the loop-strap B C, if desired.
F is an eyebolti'or receiving the rein-loopf at one end, passing through the lower end of strap B and the hamc-stock, to be riveted on the other side to secure one end of the said strap in place.
G is a rivet passing through the strap B O11 one side of the hame, thence through the haine 5 5 and the end of said strap on the other side of the hame, to secure the upper part ofthe strap in place. Thus but two bolts or rivets are necessary to secure the topstrap attachment in place upon the hame-stock A. 6o
The simplicity and compactness of construction and ready application of my attachmentare such that a cheaper, stronger, an d more sym metri cal device is produced than has ever been heretofore. 6 5
I am aware that it is not new to provide a wooden llame with a metallic top piece having either notches for receiving a loose llame-strap loop or provided with raised loops for the receptionof the leather hamestrap. I am also 7o aware that an adjustable topstrap loop has been provided with a contracted extension adapted to fit on the ordinary Strap-loops of wooden hames.
Having thus described my invention, what I 7 5 claim is` A top attachment for ahame, composed of a metal strap, B, having the series of strap-loops C, united by means of contracted webs c, cast integral therewith, and forming bearingvnotch- 8o es between the loops C, in combination withv the adjustable loop D, having notch d, resting upon the webs c and fitting into the notches between the loops C, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof Il have hereunto set my hand.
RUSSEL E. WHITZEL.
Vitnesses:
J NO. E.' JONES, A. GLUOHOWSKY.
