i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERVEY SULLINGS, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of- Letters Patent No. 279,459, dated June 12, 1883. Application filed November 13, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERvEY SULLINGs, of Kalamazoo, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Valves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication, and in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved valve. Fig. 2' is a longitudinal vertical sectional view on line y y in Fig. 6. Fig 3 isa sectional view of a modification of the valve proper. Fig. 4. is a cross-section on line .fr x in Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a front view of the valve-seat. Fig. 6 is a front view of the valve; and Fig. 7 is a sectional detail view, showing another modiiication' of the valve.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to check-valves for pipes; and it consists in the detailed construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fullydescribed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter B indicates the casing of the valve, which has` a projection, B', in front, which is screw-threaded inside and nut-shaped on the outside to enable it to be screwed onto apipe, P. The flat top part of the casing B has an aperture, A, provided with a screw-threaded flange, F, upon which screw-threaded flanged cover O fits. The rear part of the casing has a cylindrical screw-threaded aperture, G, into which the screw-threaded neck H of ailanged pipe-joint, D, fits. To make the connection perfectly water-tight, a rubber or leather washer, E, is 40 placed between the casing and the flanged part of the part D. This part D has an eccentric aperture, K, which in front is covered by a valve, a, and the rear end of which is screwthreaded and receives the screw-threaded end of a pipe, P. The web D has on its face two projections, u o, which form bearingsA for a pin, e, upon which the valve-clap a is hinged. The side of the valve-clap facing into .the casing B is convex, and the side u of the valveclap andthe valve-seat I may be of different shapes, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 7. In Fig. 2 the valve-seat has a circular groove provided with a suitable packing-ring, u. In Fig. 3 the side u of the valve is' grooved in a like 55 manner and provided with a similar packingring, while in Fig. 7 the side u of the valve is beveled and ts into the beveled valve-seat,
all three deviceshaving the same purpose-to prevent the iiuid from passing back through 6o the valve.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In avalve of the described class, the combination of the valve-seat D, having screwthreaded neck H, adapted to be screwed into the valve-case B, and thicker upper wall or web, D, with the casing B, having cover C, substantially as and for the purpose shown 7o and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto axed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERVEY SULLIN GS.
