To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, XVILLIAM E. YARNEY, of Daytonville, county of lVashington, State ofilowa, and \V. J. HULL, residing at Vellman, in the county of lVashington and State of Iowa, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vood-lVorking Machines; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention-has relation to woodworking machines; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
Figure 1 isa side elevation of our improved wood-working machine. Fig. 2 is a plan view, showing the top of the table. Figs. 3 and 4 are cross-sectional detail views, showing the mechanism for operating the scroll-saw, and an end elevation of the former and a part of its mechanism.
,Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the bed-frame. The bench or bed-frame is of ordinary construction, longitudinally slotted and flanged to receive the adjustable and removable mechanism usually employed. An ordinary treadle or steam-power may be usedto drive the machinery. A sliding frame is seemed to the benchframe, in the usual manner in lathes, and has a screw-threaded shaft with the center point for centering the piece to be operated upon, the other end being abutted against the chuck on the main shaft D.

In order to employ the horizontally-rotating cutter or former or the jig or scroll saw, the frame B, carrying the table B, should be moved up until a crank-shaft, B', which is threaded on its outer end, engages the internally-threaded portion of the main shaft D, the machine being operatedto draw the male into the fcm-al e screw, thus forming a connection between the main shaft 1) and the crank-shaft B. This crank-shaft B has one of its bearings in the left-hand end, E of the frame B, and is provided on its under end with a vertical bev eled friction-gear wheel, E", having a recessed face for the reception of ahorizontal pulley, E", upon an adjustable vertical shaft, E, having bearings in arms E E, and provided with horizontal friction-gear wheels E E", adapted to be held entirely out of gear \Vlth the vertical gear-wheel E", or to be thrown alternately rotary cutter or former, as hereinafter explained. This change of position of the gear is effected by connecting the lower end of the vertical shaft to an arm, F, having bearings near the lower end of the left-hand end portion E" of the frame B", a compressinglever, F*, being employed to operate the same. The right-hand end, F of said frame is provided on its outer face with a vertically-adjustable frame, F, working in ways F adjustable to compensate for wear, which carries a vertical band-wheel, G", in which is fixed a vertical shaft, G, passing up through a vertical sleeve, G, and is adapted to receive upon its upper. end a cutter, G which is secured in place by a nut and washer. The adjustment of'this cutter and shaft is effected by a hand-wheel, G, and threaded rod G, connected to the lower end of the adjustable frame E The vertical. bandavheel G is connected by an endless band, G with a horizontal pulley, E, on the vertically-adjustable shaft E. This cutter G is designed to cut bevels and scallops, and may be rotated in either direction or may be left idle by appropriately manipulating the friction-gear last hereinbefore mentioned.

The lower portion of this bifurcated arm H passes through a bearing or guide, H, and its lower end is rigidly secured to a wrist-pin, 1 upon which the lower end of a pitman-rod, I, arti culates, the upper end of which is removably clamped by a hinge-clamp, I, held in place by a.set-screw to the horizontal portion of double crank, I, upon the crank-shaftB". A circular metallic guard-plate, J, having a central perforation and a radial groove, J, arranged in the lateral line of the table B, is let into the surface of said table, and is provided with an adjustable slide, J, having at its inner end vertical recesses, in which the back of the saw plays.
K designates an arm, the base of which is secured to the right-hand end of the bench- ,frame A, and has a locking-pin, K passed through a perforation therein and into an aligned perforation in the end of the benchframe to prevent it from accidentally turning out of place, but which, when designedly removed, will permit said arm to be turned out of place when disconnected from the upper end of the jig-saw. The freeend of this arm K is provided with vertical ways K in which a slotted slide, K, adjust-ably connected to a spring-arm, L upon the arm K works. The lower end of said vertical slotted slide K is provided with downwardly and inwardly inclined lateral recess, L,which is intersected at right angles by a vertical recess, L the lat ter to receive the upper end of the saw-blade and the former to receive the cross-pin L by which the sawvis removably connected to the slide R In the vertical slot M is provided a bolt, M having a washer and a securingnut, by which it may be adjusted to any point within said slot for the purpose of adjusting it to saws of different lengths.
The rear side of the vertical ways K is provided with avertically perforated bearing, N in which a vertical rod, N is adapted to be adjusted vertically. The lower end of this rod N is provided with an adjustable bifurcated foot, N secured in place by a nut and washer upon its under face. Its solid end is provided with a vertical recess, in which the back of the jigsaw plays when in operation. It may be adjusted back and forth to suit saws of different widths, and serves both as a guide and a brace for the same.
It is not broadly new to provide mechanism for reversing the rotary cutter in this class of machines, and we therefore only claim our improved construction.
The saw mechanism herein shown and described is not claimed in this application; but the right to make a future separate application is herein reserved.
Having thus fully described our invention,
what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
- Ina wood-working machine, the combination, with the bench-frame A, of the adjustable removable frame B, the table 13*, and the crankshaft B threaded at its inner end and attached to the main shaft D, and mechanism for driving said shaft D and the crankshaft B and the friction-gears E E E their shifting mechanism, and the cutter G substantially as specified.
