GEORGE SISSON, OF FREDONIA, NEW YORK.
DUMPlNG-WAGON.
SPECIFICATION fQrming part of Letters Patent No. 279,029,-dated June 5, 1883, 7 Application filed February 23,1883. (Modeh) ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of thisspecification.
My invention relates to an improvement in dumping-wagons; and it consists in the combination of a wagon body or bed with the two cross-bars, which have their ends extend beyond the body, the side bars, pins, or stops which are passed through the side bars, the pivoted doors, latches for the doors, and stops to prevent the doors from dropping down.
The object of my invention is to provide a body for dumping-wagons in which a part of the bottom itself is made to form not only the door, but an inclined plane, down which the material will slide out beyond the side of the wagon.
Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section. is an inverted view.
A represents a wagon-bed, of any suitable shape or size that may be preferred; and B are the two drop-doors, which are hinged or pivoted at or near the center of the bottom of the body, so that they will drop downward when left free to do so, leaving an opening, through which the contents of the bed will freely slide. As here shown, there are two of these doors placed upon opposite sides of the bed, so that either one or both can be opened at once. When two are used, as here shown, the load can be dumped out beyond the side of the wagon, on whichever side it is preferred. I do not limit myself as to the number of doors, as this is a mere matter of convenience. \Vhere two are used, the necessity of turning the wagon around so as to dump in the desired direction is done away with. As here shown, the two doors are pivoted or hinged upon the rod which is held in suitable boxes, D, which are secured to the bottom of the wagonbed. The hinges of the door will be made of suitable length and strength, so as to extend any desired distance across the bottom of the doors, and thus brace and strengthen them as much as possible. Each door will be held in Fig. 2
place by means of a latch, E, which is secured to the under side of the door, and held in place by means of a suitable guide, F. The part with which the latch engages is a notched metallic strip, G, which extends down the sides of the body, and which preferably has its upper end bent at right angles, so as to catch over the top of the body, and thus prevent the weight which Lis placed upon the top of the doors from tearing the strip loose from the side of the body.
' Extending across the under side of the body are the two cross-bars V, which have their ends to project a suitable distance beyond the sides of the body. To these ends are secured the side bar, H, each one of which has a hole through it, so that a pin, I, can be passed down through for the purpose of locking the latch in place, and thus prevent the accident a1 dumping of the load by the latch working loose. These cross-bars have secured to them the bent rods J which serve as stops and supports for the doors when dropped downward. When either one or both of the doors are dropped downward they form incline planes,
"down which the contents of the bed run.
In order to prevent any part of the load fronr running off from the ends of the door, and thus falling under the wagon, the triangular pieces L are secured to the under side of the body, just at the edge of the openings, and
these pieces form side or end boards for the' doors.
To the top of the bottom of the bed is ap plied a metallic strip, 0, which extends along over the joint formed by the doors when opened, and prevents the contents of the wagon from dropping in between'the inner edges of the door, and thus interfering with their being closed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim-- The combination of a wagon bed or body with the two cross-bars, which havetheir ends to extend beyond the edges of the body, a side bar, a pin or stop, a pivoted door, which forms a part of the bottom of the bed, a latch for holding the door in position, and a stop for limiting its movement, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' GEO. WV. SISSON.
