Application April 26, 1954,Seria l No. 425,370 SClaims. '(drawers? This invention is a novel toilet seatextension for invalids, and the principal object of the invention is to provide an extension seat which may be used in connection with and mounted-upon-the-ordinary toilet bowl, same being of stainless'steeland'carrying a supplementary seat which preferably slopes forwardly and downwardly,- and which is adjustablevertica-lly to-suitthe particular invalid who, through-injury tohis-backl'cannot bend-his back through 'anangle as great as say, "90 degrees.
-(ithe'r minor objects-of theinvention will be hereafter 's'e't'forth.
I will explain the invention with reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate one practical embodiment thereof, 'to' enable others familiar with the art to adopt and use the same; and will summarize in the claims, the novel features of construction, and novel combinations of parts, for which protection is desired.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a front perspective view of an ordinary toilet having my novel extension seat attachment applied to the bowl thereof, the same being separate from the ordinary hinged toilet seat.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the extension seat attachment, showing in dotted lines same seated upon the rim of a conventional toilet bowl.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 33, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line 44, Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical section on the line 5-5, Fig. 1. a i
In said drawings, Fig. 1 shows an ordinary toilet including a bowl B of customary design and form, the same being adapted to be mounted upon the floor and having the customary hinged seat S, and the customary flush tank F, operated by valve V, the same forming no part of my present invention.
My novel extension seat, as shown, comprises a lower casing 1, of shape conforming with the general contour the rim of bowl B, said gasket 2 being secured in any desired manner to the flange 1b. The shape of lower casing 1 may vary according to the particular shape of the rim of bowl B to which the same is to be applied. The.
upper end of lower casing 1 is preferably formed with a rounded bead 1c, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 5 which extends outwardly of casing 1 and, as shown, preferably I slopes slightly upwardly from the front end of bowl B.
to the rear end thereof.
Slidably fitting within the lower casing member 1 is an upper casing member 3. which is preferably of the same shape as the lower casing member 1 but of slightly 7 smaller diameter, said upper casing having a'periphera'l flange 3:; at its upper end, as shown in Figs. 2, 4 and 5 which slopes slightly upwardly and rearwardly from the front end of bowl B to the rear'end thereof, and upon flange 3a is a supplementary toilet seat 4 which is-of the generalsize and shape of the regular seat S of the toilet, the particular size and shape of supplementary seat 4 forming no part ofimy present "invention.- Seat 4 is secure'dto flange 3a; as l-shown in Fig. 4, by screws -5 or the likeextending through theflange Sa'and :into thef bottoin of seat B-y theabove constructionthe supplementary seat 4 -is -givena slight angularity with respect -to the' horizontal,-th e same sloping slightly upwardly an'd *rearwardly from tlre front end, :of the seja tto the rearqend thereof, as showninZFig. 2'. g r v Means are provided foradju'sting the vertical height of supplementary esfeat--4T andthe height: of the upper casing memben 3' upon the lower casing member -1. As shown in Figs :2; 3 and 5, fthe adjusting. means'consists of hollow columnszfihavingflanges fiaat their lower ends which areisecuredThy-screws; welding or the like: tothe top 'of the flange 2111, "one such column *6: being disposed :at the frontend of bowl B," and two fsuch columns :6' being disposedadjacentj the rear end-of the '"bowl' at opposite sides of t-heqcasing' L, -the:same. beingupreferably equidist-antfr'ont the front comm-n 6. The columns 6 are shown as being hollow andasreceiving.rods? or the like which Carry on theirup'per endsibrackets 7ri'tse'curedby'screws or the like to the under side of the flange 30 on the upper end of upper casing 3, said rods 7 or the like being in axial alignment with the columns 6, and the. lower ends of the rods 7 entering and slidably engaging the bores of the columns 6. In the lower ends of each of the rods 7 are a series of diametrically extending holes 7x, Figs. 2 and 5, adapted to be engaged by pins 8, Figs. 1, 2 and'3, which pass through aligned holes 7x in the lower ends of the rods 7 and through holes in the upper ends of the columns 6, the pins 8 being preferably secured to the columns 6 by means of chains 9 or the like, so as to prevent the same from becoming lost. By the above construction, obviously the extension seat 4 may be adjusted to the desired elevations by engagement of the pins 8 with the corresponding holes in the rods 7 and columns 6. Any number of holes 7x may be provided in the rods 7.
My extension seat is adapted for use by invalids who, through back injuries or the like, cannot bend [their backs through angles approaching but are permitted only a limited slight angulan bending of the spinal column.
The extension seat 4 extends considerably above the elevation 'of the normal toilet seat Swhen in use with respect to the floor, and therefore is obviously particularly adapted for us'eby invalids'or persons having back injuries of the type referred to.
' Obviously the extension seat 4 may be, readily applied I to or removed from any ordinary toilet bowl when the customary seat S is inraised position, as shown in Fig. 1.
The casing members 1 and 3 .of the extension seat are pref erably made of stainless steel and are designed to hold weights from to "3.00 pounds, and to carry theexftension. toilet seat] 4. attached .to' the topof the uppercasing member 3. The engagement of the lower end' lat-of the lower casing member l within the "rim of the bowlB prevents the toilet seat from being shifted laterally off of 1 .the bowl, andthe flange 1b holds the extension 'seat"4. f
against, vertical displacement. Obviously, V the height of 'x'the combinedcasings land'3l may be adjustedto suitpthe 7 particular individual for whom said extension is intended lO;bCUSed.
I do not limit my invent ion to the exact form' shown .in the drawings, for obviously changes may be madejherein within the scope of the claims.
I Iclaim: V
