UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
THOMAS A. CRABTREE, OF EAST SURRY, MAINE.
HOLDBACK.
SPECIFICATION forming Application filed April 5, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS A. CRABTREE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at East Surry, in the county of Hancock and State of Maine, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Holdbacks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures ofre'ference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in holdbacks for harness; and it consists in adevice which forms a permanent fixture upon the shaft or thill of the vehicle, by means of which the holdback-strap attached to the breeching of the harness can be readily disconnected and detached; and it consists of a plate having a longitudinal slot, within which is pivoted a double-fingered catch and a curved spring, which serves the double purpose of preventing the holdback straps from being displaced, and holds the fingers of the pivoted casting in place, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the annexed drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the same attached to the thill or shaft of the vehicle. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section.
A represents a portion of the thills of a ve-- I suitable material may be employed. This casting has a straight lower edge, 0', and apointed end, (1, which is slightly curved, so as to allow the same to turn upon its pivot. The upper part of this casting consists of two fingers, c and e, the rear one, e, being curved as a seg ment or portion of a circle at its outer periphery, as shown, the other finger-being approximately at right angles with the base, the
of this holdback are parts of circles, the centers being the pivot.
To one end of the slot 1) ol' the casting B is secured a fiat spring, E, which is of sufficient the finger 0. This spring serves a twofold purpose: First, it prevents the holdback-strap, when placed within the opening between the fingers, from being displaced, and it also prevents the finger from being accidentally opened, as the end of the spring, pressing upon the end of the finger 6, will hold the same closed.
ii-"hen it is desirable to detach the holdbackstrap from the thill the casting C is turned upon the pivot by the same being drawn forward, which leaves a free opening, through which the strap may be removed.
Having thus described myinvention, whatl Patent, is-
The casting B, provided with a longitudinal slot, 1), and curved spring E, in combination with the casting C, pivoted thereto, and. pro vided with curved arm 6' and upward1y-projecting finger c, the spring E extending around and over the fingers c e, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
7 In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
