I UNITED STATES ATE-NT SAMUEL H. BELL, OF MEXICO, MISSOURI, ASSIG-NOR ONE-HALF TO STOCKTON LEE GRIFFIN, OF SAME PLACE.
TWO-WHEELED VEHICLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,855, dated June 5, 1883.
Application filed November 22, 1882. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL HOUSTON BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mexico, in the county ofAudrain and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Carts; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in road-carts, and it consists in the peculiar 0011-. struction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims. I attainthese objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- .Figure 1 is a side view, in perspective 5 Fig. 2, a rear elevation. Fig. 3 represents the shaft shackles or yokes; Fig. 4, the truss attached to the axle; Fig. 5, the equalizing block Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one end of one of the single-leaf springs supporting the body, with holes therein for equalizing the weight of the body and contents; Fig. 7, the clip and clip-yoke.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The body of the cart A is suspended on single-leaf springs 0 0, attached to plates 8 under the seat-frame, and auxiliary springs a a, attached to the front part of the body, and crossbar independent of the shafts, so that the motion of the horse in traveling is not imparted to the body of the cart.
The shafts d d are secured to the axle F by the shackle or yoke g, Fig. 3, the nuts 7a k being tightened to their proper place against the clip I, thus holding securely-and preventing the shafts from turning or slipping on the axle F. Y
The shackle consists of the rectangular yoke I 9, provided with the plate l and nuts 7c and bend or arch in the axle is prevented from bending by the truss m, which also strengthens that part of the axle on each side of the bend or arch.
The weight of the body A and contents is equalized by having three holes, q q g, at equal distances, in springs c c, Fig. 6, where they rest on the plate 8, a pin, 20, being placed in the center of the plate 8, Fig. 5, so that the springs 0 c are easily adjustable for a light or heavy load.
I am aware that prior to my invention roadcarts have been made with springs connected to the shafts, and that equalizing-plates have been used in conjunction therewith. I therefore do not claim such a combination, broad- 1y; but
' What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a road-cart axle, F, centrally arched or bent upward near its middle, of the truss m, extending under the base of said arch and secured to the lower face of said axle by the clips 0 g, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of springs c cwith plate 5 s and pin w and holes (1 q q, all substantially as set forth.
SAMUEL HOUSTON BELL. In presence of 0. WV. BAKER, O. GUrHRIn.
