  • Marginal or border strips for mattresses are generally made with inner and outer fabric walls having a relatively thin layer of padding material therebetween and stitched together. These strips are generally made sutiiciently long to provide material for a multiplicity of mattresses, and are shipped or stored in large rolls thereof. Preparatory to being applied to a mattress a strip of predetermined length is drawn from the roll and pierced at selected portions to receive ventilator grommets and handle mounting devices. Inasmuch 'as mattresses are produced in several sizes requiring border strips of various lengths, care must be exercised in the placement of the various ventilators and handle mounting means so that, when the border strip is sewn to the mattress, the handles and ventilators will be positioned evenly and properly thereon.

12 Claims. (Cl. 271-25) My invention relates generally to machines utilized in the manufacture of mattresses and more -specilicallyto measuring and indexing machines for use in preparing mattress border strips prior to assembly thereof to a mattress. f
Marginal or border strips for mattresses are generally made with inner and outer fabric walls having a relatively thin layer of padding material therebetween and stitched together. These strips are generally made sutiiciently long to provide material for a multiplicity of mattresses, and are shipped or stored in large rolls thereof. Preparatory to being applied to a mattress a strip of predetermined length is drawn from the roll and pierced at selected portions to receive ventilator grommets and handle mounting devices. Inasmuch 'as mattresses are produced in several sizes requiring border strips of various lengths, care must be exercised in the placement of the various ventilators and handle mounting means so that, when the border strip is sewn to the mattress, the handles and ventilators will be positioned evenly and properly thereon.
My present invention is intended primarily for use as an accessory to combination punch and grommet setting devices of the type disclosed and claimed in the United States Letters Patent No. 2,705,087 issued to Michael Bechik, for the purpose of drawing border strip material through said machine and indexing the same as above indicated.
An important object of my invention is the provision of a mattress border strip measuring device which will automatically draw a predetermined length of border strip from 'a source of supply and with intermittent movements, whereby accurately spaced portions of said Alength may be worked upon during intervals between said movements.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a measuring and indexing device as set forth having means for anchoring one end of a border strip and traveling support means movable in one direction to draw said strip from the source of supply, and in the opposite direction to fold the strip after the same has been measured and worked upon.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a device of the above type having novel means for controlling the intermittent movement of the border strip drawing or feeding means, which control means includes a plurality of groups of control elements, and of mechanism for quickly yand easily moving a selected group of control elements into and out of operative positions in said device, whereby to vary the increments of movement of the strip drawing means and to vary the overall measured length of the border strip.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a machine as set forth having a track, a pair of border strip supporting devices on said track, and means for driving one supporting device in border strip feeding and return directions at substantially twice the speed of the other supporting device, whereby a length of border strip is supported at longitudinally spaced portions by both devices nited States Patent 2,787,466 Patented Apr. 2, 1957 and caused to be folded thereover upon return movements of said devices.
Still another object of my invention is the provision of a machine as set forth which is relatively simple and inexpensive to produce, which is highly eicient in operation, and which is rugged in construction and durable in use.
The above and still further highly important objects and advantages of my invention will become apparent from the following detailed specification, appended claims and attached drawings.

As above indicated, the device of the instant invention is adapted for use as an accessory to machines for punching holes in mattress border strips and inserting grommets in said Vholes for the purpose of Ventilating the interior of the mattress and for supporting opposite end portions of mattress handles. Such a machine is fully disclosed in the Bechik patent, above identified, yand need not be herein described in detail. The machine is indicated by the reference character A'and is adapted to operate on a border strip, indicated at B, which may be assumed to be taken from a suitable source of supply such `as a relatively large roll thereof, not shown.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention illustrated, the numeral l indicates in its entirety a frame structure including an elongated horizontally disposed bridge 2 comprising a plate-like front wall element 3 and an elongated rear channel-shaped element 4. Upright end frames 5 and 6 support opposite ends of the bridge 2 in upwardly spaced relation to the ground or floor, indicated at X. An elongated supporting rail or track 7 extends longitudinally within the bridge 2, and is supported at its opposite end portions -by suporting arms 8 extending rearwardly therefrom to the inner surface of the channel member 4 Iand bolted or otherwise rigidly secured thereto. Mounted for longitudinal traveling movements on the track 7 is a carriage 9 having upper and lower track engaging flanged rollers 10 and 11 respectively journaled thereto. Rigidly mounted on the control 'shat 71 are a plurality of abutment elements or the like 74, each having axially projecting stop fingers 75, and defining cam acting bottom surfaces 76. Each abutment element 74 is provided with a key 77 which is adapted to be seated in a selected one of a plurality of circumferentially spaced Kaxially extending lteyways 78 in the control shaft 71. As indicated in Fig. 12, the abutment elements 74 are arranged in circumferentialely spaced groups of axially spaced abutment elements for a purpose which will hereinafter be described. A bevel gear 79 is mounted on the end portion of a shaft 71 for :axial sliding movements with respect thereto but for common rotation therewith adjacent the end wall 72. A cooperating bevel gear S is rigidly secured to the lower end of a vertically disposed shaft 81 journaled in a bearing bracket 82 that is anchored to the wall 72. The shaft 81 extends upwardly through a top wall element S3 of the adjacent end of the bridge structure 2, and terminates in an adjustment wheel or handle 8a by means of which the shaft 71 may be rotated.
A rockshaft 85 extends longitudinally within the bridge 2 and is journaled yat its opposite ends in bearings 86 at opposite ends of the bridge structure. With reference to Figs. 5 and l2, it will be seen that the rockshaft 8S extends freely through an aperture S7 in the carriage 15 and through similar apertures 88 in the anchoring block 32 of the carriage 9. Rigidly secured to the rockshaft 35 between the anchoring blocks 32 in the carriage 9 is a stop dog 89 which extends generally rearwardly from the rockshaft 35 and which is movable about the am's of the rockshaft 35 toward and away from an operat-ive position in registration with selected ones of the abutment elements 74 on the control sha-ft 71. With reference particularly to Fig. 5, it will be seen that the stop dog 09 is yieldingly urged toward its operative position by a coil tension spring 90 secured at its upper end to an anchoring pin 91 extending forwardly from the adjacent end of the stop dog 89, and at its lower end to the bottom portion of the carriage 9. One end of the rockshaft 85 extends outwardly beyond the w-all element 72, and has secured thereto an operating handle 92 by means of which the operator may rock the shaft 85 in a direction to move the stop dog out of registration with a given abutment element 74 against the bias of the spring 90. Predetermined rotary movement of the control shaft 71 by the adjustment wheel or handle 84 will position a selected group of abutment elements 74 in the path of travel of the stop dog 89. The several abutment elements of one group, being axially spaced from those of another group, will stop feeding movements of the carriages 9 and 15 at different longitudinally spaced points than those of another group. With the above described arrangement, border strips having different dimensions between the groups of holes and. grommets therein may be obtained without the necessity of shifting the abutment elements 74 longitudinally on the control shaft 71. When it is desired to so change the dimensions between sets of holes or grommets of a border strip, it is merely necessary that the operator turn the adjustment knob or handle 84' in a direction to brinc the selected group of abutment elements 74 into the path of travel of the stop dog 89. For the purpose of controlling the extreme limits of feeding and return movement of the carriage 9, 1 provide stop collars 93 and 94 adjustably secured on the shaft 71, the former It will be ,noted that, during.
feeding movement of the carriages 9 and 15, the stop dog 89 moves into abutting engagement with the adjacent end of the stop linger 75 of one of the abutment elements 74 lying in the path of travel of the stop dog 89. When this occurs, the control shaft 71 will be moved in a direction -from the left to the right with respect to Fig. 7, causing the shift crank 63 to swing the bell crank 56 in Ia direction to move the :switch operating arm 5S to its neutral position to stop the motor 44. During return movements of the carriage 9, the stop dog 39 will engage the cam acting surfaces 76 of successive abutment elements 74 and be cammed downwardly thereby so that the carriage 9 Will continue its return movement, without moving the central shaft 71, until the stop dog 39 engages the stop collar 94, whereby movement is ythen imparted to the control shaft 71 in a direction to stop the motor 44.
The control mechanism of my invention includes an `actuator comprising -a shifter fork pivotally secured to the relatively shor-t larm 62 of Ithe shifting crank 63, by a pivot pin 96. The shifter -fork 95 is provided with a `stem or shank l9'7 that projects upwardly through an opening 98 in the :top plate or 4Wall element 33, and through an opening 99 in a cover element 100 mounted on the top plate 83. I-t will be noted by reference to Figs. 7 land 8 Ithat the laxes of the pivot pin 96 'and the mount- -ing shaft 64 are at right Iangles to each other, whereby the stem 97 may be moved in an arc about the center of the shaft 64 as lwell as in an arc about the axis of the pivot pin 96. The opening 99 -is formed by a pair of slots 101 and 102 that extend longitudinally with respect to the machine `and which are longitudinally and laterally offset from each other. The adjacent ends of the slots 101 and 102 are connected as indica-ted at 103 to define a -neutral stati-on for the stem 97. Said lstem 97 is movable about -the axis of the pivot pin 96 from an inoperative position at the neutral station .103 selectively to a forward action zone defined by Ithe slot 101 or a reverse action zone defined Iby Ithe slot 102. The actuator stem 97 is shown in Fig. 9 as being positioned at the neutral station 103. When the actuator stern 97 is shifted to the forward action zone in the slot 101, it is movable between .an operative forward position, as shown in Fig. 10, at the end 104 of the slot 101, and an idle position at the end 105 of the slot 101. Likewise, when the actuator stem 97 is shifted from its neutral station 103 to the rever-se action zone defined by the slot 102, the same is movable therein between 1an operative position indicated in Fig. -l1 at the end 106 of the slot 102, and an idle position at thev inner end 107 of the slot 102. It will be noted that, when the `actuator stem 97 is shifted from its neutral position to either of the idle positions in the slots 101 or 102, that such shifting is made independently of the shiftcrank 63 and parts connected therewith. However, movement of the actuator stem 97 in either action zone :between the idle and operative positions thereof, causes the shift crank to be moved in directions to energize the motor 44 for opera-tion in either a forward or return direction. The actuator stem 97 extends upwardly throughia central aperture 103 in -a plate-like actua-tor elemen-t 109 slidably resting on the top wall element 83 lbeneath -t-he cover element 100. The opposite side edges of the 'actuator element 109 are notched to provide laterally spaced surface or edge portions 110 and 111 that are engageable respectively with ful- cram acting pins 112 and 113 projecting `upwardly from laterally spaced portions of the top wall element 33 on opposite sides of the actuator element 1109. A pair of coil tension springs 11d and.115 extend genenaily longitudinally of the machine adjacent opposite Isides of the actuator element M9, each thereof having one end anchored to an opposite end portion of -the plate-like element 109 as indicated at 116 and 1117 respectively. The opposite ends of the springs 11d and 115 are anchored -to suitable anchoring pins 118 and 119.projecting upwardly from the plate-like element 83.

What I claim is:
l. In a device -of the class.describcda supporting structure, an elongated track on said supporting structure, a carriage mounted on said track fory movements longitudinally thereof, border strip engaging and supporting means on saidcarriage, drive means including a motor for imparting movement to said carriage on said traclf. in a direction to transport said border strip, and controlmeehanism for saiddrive means, said control mechanism compri-singA a control member extending iongitudinally of said track and shiftable with respect thereto, a plurali-ty of longitudinally spaced abutment elements on said control member, a stop dog mountedvfor common traveling movements with andlfor. independent movements into and out of registration with said abutment elements, an actuator mounted in said supporting structure for shifting movements in opposite directions in one plane between a neutral station and anaction zone -and'movable in opposite directions in said yzone and inanother plane between an operati-ve drive position and an idle position, linkage connecting` said actuator .to said control' member, engagement of one of said abutment elements by said stop dog during traveling movements of' said carriage in one direction 'impartingy limited` movement to said control member. to causesaid; actuator to. he moved fromits. operative-position to its idle position to render said drive means in- As abovenoted, during this return movementy averne@ operative, and means lfor moving said actuator from its idle posi-tion to its operative drive position upon movement of said stop dog out of engagement with said one of the abutment elements whereby said carriage will be caused to resume travel toward a succeeding abutment element.
2. The structure defined in claim 1 in further combination with yielding means yurging said stop dog toward registration with said abutment elements, and mean-s adjacent one end of the track for moving said stop dog out of registration of and engagement with said abutment elements against bias of said yielding means.
3. The structure defined in claim 1 in which said means for moving the actuator to its operative drive position comprises a spring yieldingly urging said actuator toward .its operative position -in said action zone, said control element being moved by engagement of said stop dog with one of said abutment elements against bias of sa-id spring operating through said linkage.

In a device of the class described, a supporting structure, an elongated track on `said supporting structure, a carriage mounted on said track 'for movements longitudinally thereof, border strip engaging and supporting means on said carriage, drive means including a motor for imparting movement to said carriage on said track in a direction to transport said border strip, and control mechanism for said drive means, said control mechanism comprising a control member extending longitudinally of said track and shiftable longitudinal-ly thereof, a plurality of longitudinally spaced abutment elements yon said control member, a stop dog mounted on said carriage for common traveling movement-s therewith and for independent movements into and out of registration with said abutment elements, an actuator mounted in said supporting structure for shifting movements in opposite directions in a plane extending generally transversely of said track between a neutral station and an :action zone and movable in opposite directions in said zone between `an operative drive position and an idle position and in a plane extending generally longitudinally of said track, linkage connecting said actuator to said control member, engagement of one of said abutment elements by said stop dog during traveling movements of said carriage in one direction imparting limited movement to said control member t-o cause -said actuator to be moved from its operative position to its idle position -to render said drive means inoperative, and means for moving said actuator to i-ts operative drive position upon movement of said stop dog out of engagement with said one of the abutment elements whereby said carriage will be caused to resume travel toward -a succeeding abutment element.
5. ln a device of the class described, a supporting structure, an elongatedv track on said supporting structure, means adjacent one end of said track for releasably anchoring one end of an elongated mattress border strip, a carriage mounted on said track for movements longitudinally thereof, a pulley on saidcarriage adapted to be partially encompassed by a portion of said border strip passed therearound, whereby movement of said carriage from one end of the track to the other end thereof will cause a length of said border strip substantially equal to double the-length of travel of said carriage to be drawn by said carriage from a source of supply of said strip, drive means including a motor for imparting movement to said carriage on said track in a border strip drawing direction, and control mechanism for said drive means, said control mechanism comprising a control member extending longitudinally of said track and shiftable with respect thereto, a Vplurality vof longitudinally spaced abutment elements on said control member, a stop dog mounted on said carriage for common traveling movements therewith and for independent movements into and out of registration with said abutment elements, an actuator mounted in said supporting structure for shifting movements in opposite directions in one plane between i0 a neutral station and an -action zone and movable in opposite directions in another plane in said zone between an operative drive position and an idle position, linkage connecting said actuator to said control member, engagement of one of said abutment elements by said stop dog during traveling movements of said carriage in one direction imparting limited movement to said control vmember to cause said actuator to be moved from its operative position to its idle position to render said drive means inoperative, and means for moving said actuator to its operative drive position upon movement of said stop dog out of engagement with said one of the abutment elements whereby said carriage will be caused to resume travel toward a succeeding abutment element.

The structure defined in claim 5 in further combination with a second carriage mounted on said track between said first-mentioned carriage and said one end of the track, a border strip supporting element on said second carriage, and mechanism including said drive means for moving said second carriage simultaneously with and in the same direction as said first-mentioned carriage and at substantially one-half the speed of said first-mentioned carriage, whereby said border strip will be supported at all times intermediate said pulley and said border strip anchoring means.
7. ln a device of the class described, a supporting structure, an elongated track on said supporting structure, a carriage mounted on said track for movements longitudinally thereof, border strip engaging and supporting means on said carriage, drive means including a motor for imparting movement to said carriage selectively in opposite directions on said track, and control mechanism for said drive means, said control mechanism comprising a control member extending longitudinally of said track and shiftable with respect thereto, a plurality of longitudinally spaced abutment elements on said control member, a stop dog mounted for common traveling movements with said carriage and for independent movements transversely thereof into and out of registration with said abutment elements, an actuator mounted in said supporting structure for shifting movements selectively between an intermediate neutral station and forward and reverse action zones, said actuator being movable in opposite directions in each of said action zones, when shifted thereto, between operative drive positions and idle positions, linkage connecting said actuator to said control member, traveling movements of said carriage in either a forward or reverse direction being initiated by said actuator from its neutral station to a respective one of said action zones, engagement of one of said abutment elements by said stop dog during traveling movements of said carriage in a forward direction imparting limited movement to said control member to cause said actuator to be moved from its operative position to its idle position in said forward action zone to render said drive means inoperative, and means for moving said actuator from its idle position to its operative drive position in said forward action zone upon movement of said stop dog out of engagement with said one of the abutment elements whereby said carriage will be caused to resume travel toward a succeeding abutment element.

The structure defined in claim l in which said control member comprises a shaft mounted for rotary and longitudinal sliding movements in said frame structure, and in .which said abutment elements are arranged in circumferentially spaced groups on said shaft, and in further combination with means for imparting rotation to said shaft to positionA a selected group of said abutment elements to be successively engaged by said stop dog, the abutment elements of one group being spaced from those of the other groups thereof longitudinally of said shaft.
9. The structure defined in claim 1 in further combination with means for moving said stop dog out of engagement With said abutment elements, said means comprising, azrockshafttjournaled in4 said frame. structurev and.
