LAST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,426, dated May 29, 1883, j Application nleainareh 22,1883. (Numtel.)
- .To alt whom it may conce/rn:
, Beit known that I, CHARLES W.GL1DDEN, of Lynn, county of Essex, State of Massachusetts,.have invented an Improvement in Lasts, ot'. which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a j specication, like letters on the drawings repj resenting like parts. A My invention relatin g'tolasts is embodiedin 1o a last of the'kind that is usedfor holding boots or shoes While the heels are being applied thereto or trimmed. Lasts of this kind commonly consist of a heel portion connected by a shank or stem with. a toe portion, which has 153 commonly been pivoted to thesaid shank, to
enable the last to more readily be inserted in i the boots or shoes to be operated upon. AS heretofore' constructed the pivotal movement of the toe portion of thelast on the shank 1 j zoof the last has been in a'vertical plane, and
the pivotal point has commonly been either at the end ofthe toe portion of thelast adjoining the shank or at'some distance below the surface that rests in contact with the sole ot' the boot or Shoe, and the movement is not sufficient to properly accommodate the last to shoes Yof different style or shape.
The present invention consists in alasthav.
i `ing the toe-piece both pivoted and swiveled o thereon, so as to rock in a vertical plane, and
j also to turn laterally on an upright axis, to thereby accommodate the last to shoes having more or less vspring and aV greater Or less deviation from symmetry of the sole in what are 3 5 known as f right and left boots or shoes. The
\ toe-piece also has an adjustment vertically with relation to the heel, to further accom modate the last `to shoes of various sprin g.
Figure lis a side elevation, partially in longi- `Ao tndinal section, of a last embodying this invention 5 `and. Fig. 2, a transverse section thereot' Online .fr x. i p The-.q-heel-piece a, ot' usual or suitable construction, has the shank bconnected therewith The forward or toe end "of the said shank, shown as turned upward, is provided with a socket, 2, shown in this instance as screw-threaded and adapted to re ceive the threaded stemtl ofthe pivot-piece d, which is extended upward between two lugs, e, of the toe-piecefof the last. The said toe-piece f, lugs e, and pivot-piece d arebored transversely' nearthe sole-receiving portion `ot" the said toe-piece, to receive the pivot-pin or spindle t', upon which the said toe-piece has a rocking movement in a vertical plane. By locating the pivot nearer the middle of the toe-piece than its end, as` heretofore common, and nearer its sole-Supporting face than common, the said toe-piece will more readily accommodate itself 6o to the shoe than when pivoted near its end. It will be seen that the said toe-piece, together with the pivot-piece d, is free to turn or swivel laterally within the socket 2 of the shank b, and that by rotating the said toe-piece the swivel-stem willv move longitudinally, and the toe-piece may thus be raised or lowered relatively to the heelpiece a. By the lateral swivcling movement of the toe-piece in the socket 2 and the rocking movement of the toe--piece on its pivot t', and the vertical adjustment of the said toe-piece relative tothe heel portion a, the last may be made to receive and properly n't and support right and leltboots or shoes ot various different shapes without stretching or distorting the same, the boot or shoe being easily drawn into place upon the said last.
1. 1n a last, the heel portion and shank, combined with the toe-piece, having its horizon tal pivot elevated above the surface of the vheel portion, substantially as described.
2. The heel-piece and shank, combined with the vertically-adjustable toe-piece., substantially as described.
3. The heel-piece and shank, combined with the toe-piece, having both ends free to rock vertically about va horizontal pivot located above the said shank, substantially as de-` scribed. Y
4. The combination of the heel portion and shank of a last with the toe-piece having its pivot nearer the middle of its length than its ends, the said pivot being located near the face ofthe sole-support, substantially as shown 95 and described, and for the purposes set forth.
5. The heel portion and shank, combined l Intestimonywhe'reoflhave signed my name with the toe portion pivoted `and swiveled i tothis specification in the-presleiiceof lawo subthereon, as described, whereby it is free to rook 'soribingv witnesses. in a vertical plane or turn laterally to aecom- 5 modate the last to shoes of different; shape, CHARLES W. GLIDDEN.
substantially as set forth.
6. -The heel portion, shank, and toe-piece., Witnesses: combined with the pivot-piece for the said toe- G. W. GREGORY, piece, swiveled and longitudinally movablein 1 B. J. NOZES.
1o the said shank, substantially as described.
